joining us to discuss lou reed and his lasting influence is david markaze and ryan mitchell. ank you both of you for being here. ryan, you were a 15-year-old punk rocker covering songsly lou reed, covering songs by the velvet underground. what is the appeal? you're 40 years younger than he is. you're hearing music like "sweet jane," and he's talking about listening to the new york station late at night and trying to get to new music something really avant-garde and growing up in the suburbs and being around everything that you're sick off. you think, i live in a boring world, and in this old time new york you have lou reed making these songs about drug use, privates or transvestites. things that would still be pushing it today. i think as a 15-year-old kid playing punk music it struck a cord with everybody. okay, yeah, i'm mad at the boring old world out there, too. >> reporter: david, he was credited with influencing a whole new generation of rockers including ryan in our studio, was really influenced by that. what is it about his music that has done that? >> i think love of

. >> ryan david mitchell is surfing life in prison for that kidnapping. >> if you have been watching "the black list" you know show is set here in washington. harry lenox stopped by. >> he is a spokesman for a group fighting to help change lives. >> we're talking about actually reforming the criminal justice system as a whole, trying to get people to see that there is an integration that can happen between the criminal justice system, treatment people can get, so that we are more aware of what's going on before we send people back into the population. and as an actor i'm involved in media images and these sort of things and i think a lot of what we put out into the world does have an impact into the culture generally. >> absolutely. let's talk about the black list now. what a big success after two episodes. does this surprise you? >> well, i think i would say that i'm pleasantly surprised, to be honest with you. i knew we had a good shot just because we have our lead is james spader who is a masterful actor. >> tell us about your role. >> i play the fbi assistant director actually, t

a little play writing thing on the side that i didn't even know about, he was just acting and mitchell ryan and i played the part of the girl, shirley fields role and he meets me at a beauty contest and sings to me and marvin hamis wrote the music of. he wrote a song called pretty flower. >> i don't know if you can see that. >> it might be preyoutube. >> it was produced by mobile, donald rye was the director. we would rehearse it every day at a place called the lynndie oprah house in los angeles, used to be there, gone. >> you mentioned that you have done a lot of stage work in the last few years, can you talk about that? was that a conscious decision on your part? is that the thing that you always loved, wanted to do more of, you decided -- >> i decided it, it doesn't mean that it's going to happen because i didn't know how i would be accepted in new york or around, people opened their arms to me. >> you are a friend. in truth. people know you, know your history of working, probably thrilled to have the opportunity to work with you. ion't know, but thank you. >> your humility is refreshing
