let's check in with cnn's ryan nobles at the rally site and what are we expecting to hear from the senator today, ryan? >> reporter: well, martin, we talked all day about how bernie sanders is trying to stand out from this crowded field of democrats running for the party's nomination, and we've just received some excerpts from the speech that sanders plans to give here in the next hour or so and he is going to talk specifically about foreign policy, and he's going to defend his record when it comes to foreign policy during his time here, as the mayor of burlington and then a member of congress, an then in the united states senate. and there's been some written about sanders and the kind of very aggressive action he took against the reagan administration during the '80s, as a mayor of a small town, setting up exchange programs with countries around the world, and cities in different countries around the world, that were in conflict, or that were on different sides of where american foreign policy was at the time. and essentially what we read in these excerpts is that sanders is going to for

cnn's ryan nobles is there, joining us live. ryan, sanders on his home turf. where he should have some of the highest levels of support. what's his message today? >> reporter: well, what is interesting, ana, is he is going to talk a lot about how his formative years in politics here in vermont have led him to this point in his little career where he believes he is ready to become the next president of the united states. one of the things we learned that bernie sanders is going to talk about quite extensively here today is his record on foreign policy which may seem a little head scratching considering the fact that he was the mayor of burlington and he will talk about being the mayor of burlington and what does that have to do about foreign policy. much has been written the past few months how sanders was a very vocal appoint of the reagan administration and the foreign policy during that time and opposed to the vietnam war, a conscientious objector at that time and this is one of the things he will say in the speech, he will say, quote, as a young man along w

ryan nobles is with senator sanders in birmingham, alabama. d kyung lah is in los angeles where senator harris is campaigning today. ryan, senator sanders, as we just pointed out, he's trailing joe biden substantially. the abortion issue isn't traditionally a centerpiece of sanders' campaign but he's turning up the volume on reproductive freedom in the wake of alabama's new law. he was to participate in this march today. last we spoke you hadn't seen him in the march. what's the status? >> yeah, ana, we don't know whether or not bernie sanders was able to participate in this march here. it was scheduled to take place after a rally he already had scheduled here in downtown birmingham. a group of reporters were ready to follow sanders through the march, and he never was able to connect with us. the campaign says that he did end up joining the march but at the very end. we were unable to see that ourselves. but that issue aside, you're right. this has become a big issue for bernie sanders and it wasn't necessarily intended to be that way. the end
