ryan nobles on capitol hill. ryan, to you first. because there is a lot of reaction now from both sides of the aisle, condemning this act of violence. >> reporter: yes, no doubt about that, and a tremendous outpouring of support for the house speaker from her colleagues here on capitol hill, and beyond. coming right from the top. the president of the united states, joe biden, issuing a statement saying that he had been in touch with the house speaker, and that he gave her his best wishes and prayed for the speedy recovery of her husband paul pelosi. but we're also hearing from some of speaker pelosi's rivals here on capitol hill. including the house minority leader, kevin mccarthy, who said that he also reached out to pelosi, and is glad to see that the assailant in this case, the suspect has been brought into custody. and the senate minority leader as well. mitch mcconnell, also expressing concern about the house speaker, her husband, and her family during this difficult time. now, we haven't heard from nancy pelosi herself. we don

nbc capitol hill ryan nobles joining us. n put out suggesting direct talks with russia and the u.s., undercutting the u.s. position that ukraine and volodymyr zelenskyy has to be the one to determine when to compromise and when to meet with russia, which hasn't been serious. now what's happened? >> reporter: well, andrea, basically these three members of congress that had originally signed on to this letter encouraging diplomacy as it relates to the situation with russia and ukraine are now taking it all back. they have withdrawn this letter that they sent to president biden, which is a pretty dramatic step, something you don't often see here on capitol hill. and they're basically blaming it on a staff error. this is the representative from washington who said in a statement today this was a letter drafted over the summer. this is when the situation in ukraine was much different than it is today and that through some miscommunication between members of her staff and members that had signed on to this letter over the summer th

joining us now with more on this breaking story is nbc news capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles. , also with us, frank figliuzzi, former assistant director for counterintelligence at the fbi. he is also an msnbc national security analyst. ryan, what do we know and not know about the attack at this hour? >> reporter: well, the biggest open question right now, jose, is motive. there doesn't appear to be a lot of clear answers right now as to why paul pelosi was targeted inside his san francisco home early this morning. we do know that the attack was violent, and it was enough for him to be rushed to the hospital. he is in the hospital now and the spokesperson for pelosi's office says that he is receiving excellent care and is expected to make a full recovery. the speaker herself, though, was not in san francisco at the time. and of course, jose, this comes against the backdrop of an increasing number of threats directed at members of congress and their families. capitol police put out a report over the summer that said there's been a 144% increase in these type of threats, and it ha

with us now to talk about this, ryan nobles and tali farhadian weinstein, a former federal prosecutorittee likely to do if trump decides not to comply? >> i think the first step is they're going to try to engage with his attorneys and see if there is some sort of common ground that both sides are comfortable with that could allow them to get the information they're looking for for the former president. that's what they done with past witness targets. if trump defying those efforts and does not want to cooperate with the committee, they've made it clear that they'll use every resource available to them to try to compel his cooperation and goes all the way up to the possible referral of the criminal contempt of congress which would be an unprecedented step. now the committee is warning of that, but they're not ready to be that aggressive quite yet. we're still about a week or so away from the first deadline, several weeks away from the deadline where he's set to set for a deposition. there's time here for both sides to at least see if they can find some common ground. it's important to

ryan nobles is joining me now with more on this. also joined by lisa rubin. ation, obviously, trump attorneys have accepted the subpoena. what comes next for this investigation? when are we going to get the summation of all the findings? >> reporter: two good questions, yasmin. the first is that the former president has a series of deadlines he has to meet. the first being november 4th to hand over documents the second being november 14th where they've asked him to sit for a deposition. and the question is, will he adhere to either of these deadlines. the fact that his attorneys have accepted the subpoena, it opens the door for the two sides having a conversation about whether or not there's some common ground that they can meet on that would allow some level of cooperation with the former president. but few if any believes if that's going to happen. and that then will put the committee in a situation as to how they respond to the former president not agreeing or cooperating with their subpoena, do they take the dramatic step of issuing a criminal contempt ref

with us now to talk about this, nbc news capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles and joyce vance, formertorney. she's also an msnbc legal analyst. ryan, just how important is hope hicks to the committee's investigation? >> reporter: well, jose, judging by the timing of this deposition, the fact that we're just a couple of weeks away from the midterm elections and that this committee is likely not going to exist past the new year and they're already in the process of drafting their final report, it doesn't seem that hope hicks is necessarily an important part of this investigation. but that doesn't necessarily mean that she couldn't provide the committee with important information as they piece together exactly what led to and who is responsible for the events of january 6th. she is, of course, one of donald trump's closest and most loyal advisers and she was in and around the white house and the former president during that crucial period of time between the 2020 election and the lead-up to the january 6th riots, particularly when president trump was peddling all of these false claims ab

nbc's ryan nobles is on capitol hill, tali farhadian, and one of the authors one of "the new york timest, washington correspondent for the paper and nbc national security contributor. ryan, hope hicks at the white house during the key period between the 2020 election and the january 6th riot. what specifically did the committee want to hear from her? do we have any sense of whether she was more forthcoming this time than, say, back in 2019 when she lefd to answer questions by the house judiciary committee? >> not yet, chris. members of the committee, representatives for hope hicks being tight-lipped on what appears to be a lengthy deposition that took place virtually between hicks and the january 6th select committee. to answer your question about what they, perhaps, might want to ask hope hicks about, it would be what she knew about that time frame between the november 2020 election and the runup to january 6th, during that period of time where president trump was really pushing this false claim that the election was stolen from him. hicks, of course, one of donald trump's closest and

. >> we will bring in ryan nobles. good to see you. so, do we know if the committee has heard back from trump's people. >> reporter: no, we don't yet, chris. he has retained a law firm in his feelings on this specific issue. as of friday, the attorney told nbc news they had yet to receive any formal communication from the january 6th select committee. and the committee has not said whether they have served trump with that subpoena. once it take place and it's expected to just be a formality at this point, it will then begin a negotiation between trump's attorney and the committee to try and find someplace if there are both sides where people feel comfortable with trump coming before the committee and testifying for what liz cheney could be multiple days and hours. we have seen committees in the past be willing to negotiate with these witnesses to find a place where they're comfortable coming before the committee. but at the same time they want to do it on their terms. and house speaker nancy pelosi is keeping a close eye on deliberatio

i want to bring in ryan nobles who is standing by for us. we're getting more details on this by the minute here as we're learning what took place over the last couple of hours there in san francisco with regards to paul pelosi and his situation. what more do you know? >> reporter: well, yasmin, the big open question that still has not been confirmed by those that are investigating this particular situation and may not even be answered by them yet is the motivation for this attack. it was obviously a violent attack as you point out. now that we've been able to confirm that the assailant used a hammer against the speaker of the house's husband. it was serious enough to send him to the hospital. he is expected to make a full recovery. now that the fbi is involved and that's an important part of this investigation, because paul pelosi, while he is the husband of basically the third most powerful person in war, house speaker nancy pelosi is right behind the vice president in the line of succession, when the speaker is not with her husband, she is
