nbc's ryan nobles is on capitol hill. what do we know about this, ryan?ge santos campaign, and prosecutors are accusing him of impersonating dan meyer, who was at one time the chief of staff to the house speaker kevin mccarthy, and what they say is that mealy was calling potential donors, describing themselves as being meyer, and then asking them for money to support the santos campaign. as a result, he's been charged with four counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft in the indictment that was just issued in u.s. district court in brooklyn. part of the evidence that prosecutors have in this case an e-mail that was sent from mealy to george santos where he actually brags about the fact that he was impersonating meyer, and said, essentially, along the lines that he needed to take big swings in order to get big results. this of course just a part of all the controversy that's surrounding santos himself, as you rightly point out, he's facing a number of federal charges himself and also facing an ethics investigation here in congress by

joining me now, nbc capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles.he two irs whistleblowers who told the judiciary committee that they were part of a meeting in which david weiss, the now special counsel in delaware who is investigating the hunter biden probe, told them he did not have the ultimate authority to bring charges in the case. this is something that weiss himself has refuted in two separate communications to congress, saying that he had always been given the ultimate authority to make charging decisions in this case and it was something that was even backed up by the attorney general, merrick garland. well, these two whistle blowers testified the exact opposite under oath and in a public forum, so what the two chairman are looking for is to try to reconcile the disconnect between the two sides and their version of the meeting so they're subpoenaing four difo fishes, two from the irs and two from the fbi, who they say have direct knowledge of what happened in this meeting. they want them to testify about what they heard, whether or not the

joining us now from capitol hill is nbc's ryan nobles. good morning. where do things stand today?is no doubt that hunter biden and his legal team are dealing with a lot, special on multiple frons after this plea arrangement fell apart a little more than a month ago. in addition to the back and forth between the now special counsel and hunter biden's legal team, he's also facing a great deal of scrutiny from congressional investigators, particularly house republican investigators in both the judiciary and the oversight committee. the oversight committee in particular continues to release transcribed interviews from biden business associates and also from the investigators that were involved in the look into his finances and his business dealings. and now house democrats are responding to some of the information that house republicans have put out. and they are raising two important points. they say, first of all, the timing of this release from republicans strangely seems to be associated directly with the legal trouble that the former president donald trump is facing. they release

i want to bring in nbc's ryan nobles and also back with us is rick tyler. t worried about what he might do to get there and in particular they are focused on the upcoming state legislative races in virginia that are happening this fall which not too many people are paying attention to because they are off year elections but the republicans are just a couple feet away from taking control of the senate and if they are able to hold onto the house of delegates it would give a governing majority to glenn youngkin a democrats fear could tilt the street to the right and then potentially set a platform for him to make a case as a national candidate. at the very least if he is successful in winning back both the house and senate he could at least make the argument to national republicans in a short span of time that his brand of politics is what can sell and a purpleish state than someone like donald trump. it is still something that he needs to accomplish by that time meeting he would have to wind that election in november. democrats are sounding alarm bells because

eastern, i'm ryan nobles reporting from washington in for ana cabrera.s morning idalia's impact is being felt from florida to the carolinas. now a tropical storm, idalia unleashed heavy rain and life-threatening flash flooding across eastern north carolina in the early hours of this morning. after battering south carolina overnight, spitting out tornados with wind gusts strong enough to flip cars right on the roadway. people along florida's gulf coast are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm this morning. downtown cedar key almost entirely submerged in the storm. joining us from florida is nbc news correspondent maggie vespa, from north carolina's nbc's julia ainsley, and also with us is meteorologist angie lassman. let's start with you, julia. what are you seeing there in north carolina right now? >> mainly just the wind, we're just having gusts of wind coming through, shaking our cars, wu but the rain is starting to subside. we've seen some peeks of sunshine through these clouds. this is the last remnants of idalia as it moves out to sea now.
