ryan owens is in puerto rico where they're bracing for earl. but first sam is tracking the storm from cocoa beach, florida. good morning, sam. >>> good morning, robin. and it is hurricane earl that everyone is talking about this week because major cities from the eastern seaboard from the carolinas all to way to cape cod will be in that cone of uncertainty where the storm will go all week long. let's get to the boards. we'll show you three tropical systems in the atlantic this morning. of course, danielle the storm that passed earlier. the bright-colored one in the middle of the screen. let's show you what steers earl over the next couple of days. the hurricane center shows it will continue its track toward the east coast of the u.s. and then come up against a cold front that passes later this week towards thursday into friday all the way off the eastern seaboard. so if you're an old pinball fan, that would act as a bumper to take earl and shove it back to sea. otherwise, earl would be working straight toward the u.s. coastline so we'll be watc

that's where we find ryan owens, on the eastern edge of puerto rico. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, to you, robin. we still obviously have a little wind here. but for the most part, hurricane earl has moved away from this island, actually headed in your direction. puerto rico really just got a glancing blow. you can see for example, the boats behind me in the marina, they rode this thing out just fine. but further to the east, this storm left quite a trail of destruction. during hurricane earl tore across the eastern caribbean as a category 4 monster, with winds whipping at 135 miles per hour. fortunately, no island took a direct hit. here in puerto rico, the winds were strong enough to flip this airplane and tear the roofs off several buildings. right now, it's about 8:00 eastern. and hurricane earl is about as close to the island of puerto rico as this storm is going to get. about 100 miles offshore. but as you can see, it is pushing up some very angry waves here. in addition to that, we have seen tropical storm-force winds in excess o
