abc's ryan owens now on the question of keeping fans safe. >> reporter: drivers know the risk. behind the wheel of a car that can go from zero to 100 in less than three seconds. that danger was on full display during the final lap of the grand prix of houston sunday. cars bump, one goes airborne tearing into the fence designed to protect fans. watch the crash from their seats. twisted metal and rubber rained down on them. >> a piece of fence had landed to where a lady was trapped underneath it. so she was very lucky and when we walked over here, she was crawling underneath the fence to get out. >> reporter: the man inside this car, three time indy 500 winner dario franchitti remains in a houston hospital tonight. his wife, actress ashley judd, rushed to his bedside. fortunately the fans who were in these be stands were not seriously injured. it's not like it's the first time something like this has happened. in february, 28 spectators were injured by flying debris at daytona. back then none other than dario frankiety treated there has to be a better solution. some suggest addin

here's abc's ryan owens. >> reporter: tonight the long arm of the law caught up with two of the four inmates who escaped this oklahoma jail sunday. officers spotted them at this convenience store. >> the cops swarmed up, like ten of them. we went outside. that one just dropped his stuff. the other one ran down the block into the alley. >> reporter: less than 20 miles from the jail where they made their well orchestrated escape. >> they're in jail. they got all the time in the world to figure out how to do things. >> reporter: the four gathered in a jail bathroom and unscrewed a metal plate above the shower and hoisted themselves up to a crawl space and snaked along the jail's plumbing system. at the end of those pipes authorities say the men had knocked holes in the concrete. they dropped to the ground floor and they walked right through that door. out here on the street, a woman spotted those orange jumpsuits almost immediately. she called police but couldn't be sure if it was just some guys in their halloween costumes. but this was all too real. so was the one next door in arkansas

we begin with ryan owens in the middle of the mess tonight. good evening. >> reporter: good evening to you, david. we're inside one of an estimated 500 homes that look like this. talk about a muddy mess. this was a flash flood so most of the water is gone but what a mess left behind. how high did it get? look here, this is the water line almost as tall as i am. a whole lot of people here with a whoet lot to clean up. more than 100 people woke up to a real scare across central texas and had to be rescued from highsing waters. helicopters had to pluck people from tree tops after a flood washed away their suv. both are expected to be okay. emergencies crews in boats went door to door. they found families complete with their dogs stuck on the roof. firefighters climbed ladders to bring them to safety. >> everything i have, everything is gone forever. >> reporter: they seen rescued one woman who went into labor while she was trapped. evacuees had minutes to get out. more than a foot of rain fell in the austin area overnight. roads reduced to rivers
