joining us now, nbc news justice reporter ryan reilly. welcome. about this shooter? >> well, they've learned that he was really a loner, in fact he only really had associations with his family in recent years, and didn't have a lot of really friends or acquaintances. even the gaming accounts that the fbi established, there's been a real falloff in activity, so the gamer accounts he was using to communicate with others, really had not been used as frequently. we knew from before that he has googled major depressive disorder, and looked up various law enforcement figures. this all seemed to come into focus, though, when the trump campaign made its announcement just ten days ahead of when this rally took place, and when this attack took place, and that's when a lot of preparations sort of started turning up. he googled how far away lee harvey oswald was from jfk, and looked up an attempted assassination that took place overseas earlier this year. >> interesting. what is the fbi hoping to learn in the interview with former president trump, and in an i

nbc's ryan reilly is following this for us. i know the fbi gave an update about where the investigation stands. what did you learn? >> they did. and they emphasize the interview with donald trump is going to be standard and by the book, just sort of the victim interview that they typically do with anyone who would have been in this sort of scenario. take a listen. >> we have learned the subject was highly intelligent, attended college and maintained steady employment. his primary social circle appears to be limited to his immediate family. as we believe he had few friends and acquaintances throughout his life. we have identified our subject's interest in shooting began as a hobby and requests progressed into formal firearms training courses, particularly since september of 2023. >> so they emphasize that he has been a loner and even on the gamer platforms that he was using, he really fell away from activity. there's not been a lot of recent activity on the gaming platforms he used, but they have asked for information from dozen

i want to bring an empty seat is just as reporter, ryan reilly. ryan, this has been an extraordinary 24 hours of reporting, help us understand the latest in this investigation, what we know tonight? that's the fbi just sent out a statement summarizing where we are today, so i am going to pull some from that point it tells us a lot about the press conference earlier today, but runs it down in an easily digestible way. the fbi has not yet identified a motive for the shooter's actions, but they are working to determine the sequence of events and the shooter's movements prior to the shooting. they are conducting interviews and following all the in spite of they say they have also obtained their shooters telephone for examination, that is believed to be being sent out to the lob -- lab in quantico. sometimes it is a complicated issue because of the encryption and various techniques that people use to protect their data, it makes it a little more competent for people to get access to that information. that is going to be a really critical part of this in
