ryan ribeiro about what's needed to get us up to speed and his thoughts on the debate over sending kidsack to school. the white house says science should not stand in the way of schools re-opening. you are in california where the governor is expected to announce later today that the school year will begin online. what does the latest science say? will children spread the virus if they go back to school? >> science should absolutely guide tease types of decisions but admittedly the science can be a bit confusing when it comes to kids and covid, so i think it's widely known now that kids rarely die from covid. we've only had a handful of covid-19 related deaths of them in the united states but that doesn't mean they can't get it. all that said it's not just about the health of the children themselves. i think the larger concern actually is the potential for spread in the community by gathering hundreds or sometimes thousands of kids together. >> a new study just out says rapid test results within a day are needed for contact tracing to be effective, but some people are being tested today

ryan ribeiro. your medical opinion on what could slow the virus right now?> i'll tell you, the only thing that's going to stop it is a vaccine. and, you know, sometimes people will say once enough people get infected, we'll have herd immunity. the 3 million people that infected is less than 1% of the u.s. population, so we are a long way off from that unfortunately, and i don't think we want to go through hundreds of millions of infections it would take to get there. now, we can slow it down. and the most important way we can do that is, one, through robust testing and, two, through effective contact tracing. >> there's the debate over whether or not schools should re-open and if they do, how much they should re-open. if schools do re-open this fall, what should parents be concerned about the most? is there a safe way to re-open? >> first it's important to remember that fortunately severe disease among young kids is still very, very rare. rexi for teenagers and for kid coitions, our, there's ilo them and kids can cotors for disease and carry the virus home,

ryan ribeiro about each of these headlines but we started with the new warning about coronavirus.want to start with the big headline today. dr. anthony fauci warning we could see 100,000 new covid-19 cases per day. that is a significantly high number. is our health care system ready for that? >> i think we may very well already be at 100,000 cases a day because we're confirming 40,000 to 50,000 a day. there's a couple of things to remember here. one, there is a lag time to reported cases so you should look at that curve, look at where it's going to be three to four days from now, and that's probably where we are right now. we'll have to watch closely in the next week if we see a big increase in hospitalizations then we know the health care system will be struggling. >> a new harvard study says we're only testing 500,000 people per day nationwide and researchers say we need about a million tests per day and found only 17 states are doing enough testing. how much of a problem is the testing process right now? >> this really is a huge problem and really in particular a robust testing

ryan ribeiro about the overall rick risk for children. >> i think cases like this do actually bring up something important which is while the virus itself doesn't very often lead to serious outcomes for children, there's still a lot we don't know about what other things this virus can put children at risk for both in the short term and long term so definitely we shouldn't be cavalier about exposing our children to a virus where the long-term risks are very much unknown. >> her family doesn't know how she was infected. she spent the summer at home. she did not attend school or summer camp. her mother was also tested but is still waiting for results. >>> senate republicans are expected to unveil their economic relief package today. it's expected to include another round of stimulus checks for most americans, but a change in unemployment benefits is leaving millions in limbo. abc's karina mitchell has details. >> reporter: this morning new economic relief possibly on the way for millions of americans. senate republicans are unveiling a proposal today offering most americans a second round
