kpix 5's ryan takeo is in napa this morning where dozens of buildings are too dangerous to enter and ryan, you mentioned that you did not feel these aftershocks. >> reporter: that's right, michelle. we're talking 70 -- [ pause ] >> reporter: that's right, we're talking 70 of these read tagged buildings. i didn't feel the aftershocks. but some neighbors have. they felt it. it was more faint, obviously, than sunday's shaker but still, this is obviously bringing up some memories of what happened on sunday. so we'll get that reaction for you coming up at 6:30. showing you this house right here, one of 70 houses here in the city that have been red- tagged, inspectors, they have surveyed about 75% of the city's buildings. the buildings deemed red-tagged are a mix of businesses and homes. one building was both. the woman we talked to runs her business out of her apartment and is thankful that she has plenty of help. >> everybody has been really gracious to offer me places to stay, places to store my things and even people are getting together funds. >> reporter: so sarah right there, she say

ryan takeo, kpix 5. >> the usgs wants to get more seismographs in urban areas for better measurements of ground movement. right now napa has one seismograph. it is one that recorded sunday's quake. it's installed at downtown joe's brewery and restaurant. it's a new type of seismograph that communicates to the usgs through the internet. >> you know, i just like science and, uhm, we were going through earthquake retrofit here so i was studying about earthquakes, found the net quakes program, applied for it, i didn't remember i applied for it. so when they called me years later to install the device i was surprised >> since sunday's quake, the usgs says it wants to install more of the devices in the napa area. >>> crews are hammering away tonight on 280. the freeway is closed northbound from the 101 interchange in san francisco all the way to king street. the construction is going to make that freeway safer. as anne makovec shows us, in the meantime, it's causing some headaches for drivers. >> it's insane. >> reporter: traffic backups started yesterday afternoon and ramped up again for t

kpix 5's ryan takeo was there. people were already shaken up. these aftershocks probably didn't help too much. >> reporter: that's right, michelle. and just in the last hour, as well, with all the spectators being here, they felt the aftershock this morning. they wanted to see the damage. this fence came up just in the last hour. now, we have seen city and state inspectors this morning revisiting tagged buildings. here's one of the most visible red-tagged buildings downtown. the main focus for inspectors is to finish what they started sunday and then move on to check additional damage. for those who felt the aftershocks, it really rattled nerves. >> it scared me. it just -- my heart of started to race and i ran out and i thought, please stop. >> reporter: the 3.9 aftershock surprised her and it was a painful reminder of the damage done sunday. >> i got hit in the head with a night stand and a lamp during the earthquake. >> reporter: on sunday. >> on sunday, yeah. so it was a little aftershock. i didn't know it is if it was going to get big. >> r

kpix 5 ryan takeo says it's only luck that she is even alive. ryan. >> reporter: we talked to that woman as she was coming back home from the hospital. just hours earlier, she heard gunshots and glass shattering and then she realized she had been hit in the ear and also in the shoulder and neck. we talked to her hours after this happened. it's also interesting where this happened. we are at the police department right now but this incident happened just a block that way. the 23-year-old victim let kpix 5 take a picture of her wounded ear. the bullet grazed her as she slept around 4 a.m. another bullet hit her here in the shoulder. you can see three bullet holes in her bedroom window at fifth and elm streets but neighbors say they heard more shots than that. >> i was in a dead sleep and i heard about five pops. >> reporter: she was the only neighbor willing to talk on camera. there's a strong no snitch culture in this neighborhood. the family in today's shooting claims they weren't targeted. but they fear saying anything could put a bull's eye on

kpix 5's ryan takeo live in napa where that inspection backlog is now 800 homes and businesses. ryan. >> reporter: allen, you don't have to be an inspector to see that this house has issues right here because of sunday's shaker. take a look at the stairs right there. they are sloping and sagging. there's some separation between the rail and the stairs. even this leaning victorian, though, spent four days on the waiting list. it wasn't inspected until today. yes, because of that backlog of 800 buildings in just the city of napa. >> that's like a part of me. >> reporter: 519 madison, it's been her home for 42 years. >> i feel like i have lost part of my heart and my life. i -- [ pause ] >> i'm overwhelmed. >> reporter: today inspectors red-tagged it. three days after the quake, three days after sherry called the city's inspection request hotline. >> we have about 800 calls on a backlog on that line and we're trying it get to those as quickly as possible. >> reporter: building inspectors came to check out sherry's whole neighborhood near downtown because there were a lot of concerne

ryan takeo is live near mill valley where police are trying to find a link between the two. ryan. >> reporter: liz, there have been police deputies -- rather, marin county sheriff's deputies here all day and there's a mystery here on carlotta circle. police found one body here last night. then this morning, another right next door. the only thing police are sure of right now, at least one of them was murdered. >> we don't know what we have. this is definitely a homicide involving two people. >> reporter: the police investigation started last night on carlotta circle. a family came home to find their loved one, a 61-year-old man, dead in the backyard. this morning, when police started looking for clues from neighbors, they found another man dead right next door. >> i was woken up this morning at 7:45 by three sheriffs. >> reporter: a wake-up call for lynn. her neighborhood near mill valley has always been a sleepy suburb. >> absolutely shocking because it's normally really quiet and it's, uhm, really scary and upsetting. >> not really the kind of thing that i would expect in m

our ryan takeo talked to the owner, who says there was something very familiar about the truck used to slam into the shop. ryan? >> reporter: hi, liz. there's still quite a mess here. right here are the skidmarks from the getaway pickup truck, this planter is in shambles, and right here they were able to board up the doors that the pickup truck reversed through. the owner says surveillance video shows the pickup truck backing into these doors and that pickup had a city of oakland logo on it. these pictures show the damage. the mess left behind. the owner of oakland's montclair golf course said someone backed up a pickup truck through his front doors and then took dozens of golf clubs. the owner, who asked us not to show his face, says he was shocked when he got a close look at the truck. >> it was a city of oakland truck. >> reporter: kpix 5 has learned it's a parks and rec maintenance truck that was stolen overnight. not only that. somehow the crooks got their hands on a city-issued key to open the locked gate not golf course. >> oh, are you kidding city in? totally bothers me. >> rep

in napa, ryan takeo, kpix 5. >> those aftershocks helped reveal new damage near two area bridges. the far left lane of southbound 29 is closed at the approach to the george butler bridge south of napa. the chp says some soil settled and needed inspections but there is no damage to the bridge itself. >>> just a little further south, another bridge backup. this time the mare island bridge at westbound 37. chp says the aftershock did some damage in the area but officials say the bridges themselves appear to be okay. >> primarily, it's -- [ inaudible ] >> it's not the bridge it he have is, it's the approaches. there will be a need to repair the approaches. >> and then there are problems like this one. this is craigy court in napa where a broken water main has opened up a sizable sinkhole. take a look at that thing. the road is now closed at westview drive. many homes in the area are still without water tonight. >>> napa schools have been deemed safe. students will finally start the school year tomorrow. but mark kelly shows us, it's now a race against the clock to get rid of all the e

kpix 5's ryan takeo with a clever way they're trying to streamline that process and get to it all. ryan. >> reporter: that would include maybe not even visiting some of the houses. that happens in some rare cases. but it is happening. first, the first go-around you check out the outside of the building. this house on madison, it was red-tagged. that happened just today because of the 800-building backlog even though this house has stilts on it to try to support it. from here, th pro -- the process is tougher. the next phase, they head inside. is there any more damage inside the house? you can't see it from the street? you have to also be able to second-guess other experts by rerating buildings. it's a huge task. >> second round they go back inside the worst damaged places and further evaluate and that may change some of the yellow tags that may become red, some of the yellow tags may go away. >> reporter: the city says its goal it to be done with the 800 inspections by friday. how will they do that? city workers, they are going to be calling people on the waiting list over the next
