i am ryan yamamoto. sonoma state university is the latest school where demonstrators have set up camp to protest the war in gaza. the tents went up this weekend. students want the school to disclose investments, create a curriculum on palestinian history and permanent cease fire. the school did respond with a statement saying sonoma state university is primarily concerned with three things during such events. safety of students, faculty, staff, visitors, supporting right to free expression by our community and minimizing disruption to the teaching, learning, working taking place on campus. students say that statement is not enough. they want direct action from the university. >> it seems sonoma state's tactic is to kind of ignore us and use our oppositional movement, like, to kind of coop as a messaging for the school to say we support students while not doing any of our demands. >> students say they plan to stay in place until all demands are met. >>> in other parts of the country encampments continue t

i'm ryan yamamoto.the latest on the ongoing protest happening on college campuses all across the country starting at uc berkeley where students have reached day two of their campout. our shawn chitnis has the latest. >> students spend another night in tents on the steps of sproul hall here on berkeley's campus. you can see that their presence is growing in the few days they have been here, explaining to us that they are protesting the war in gaza and showing solidarity with other students who have similar demonstrations at different campuses across the country. their demands specify that they want to see the university cut ties with anyone who has a relationship with israel , specifically related to arms suppliers and that the university also knowledges that israel's actions in gaza are genocide. we spoke to a student today who is a part of this demonstration and she explained that while they have not had any of the major incidents we are seeing in other parts of the country, they remain concerned about

i am ryan yamamoto. this case can have far reaching implications as california and bay area continue to grapple on how to address the homeless crisis. >> when housing is under attack, what do we do? >> demonstrators gathered to call for solutions for the unhoused. in oregon a city of about 40,000 people saw more people homeless sleeping outside in tents or cars. businesses and residents started complaining so the city started enforcing laws with fines or even a month in jail for repeat offenders. a group who were homeless sued saying that amounted to unconstitutional cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the eighth amendment. this is getting the attention of governor newsom who says this can make it impossible with the encampments. more on the significance of the case and the impact. >> we'll address a very narrow question which is is there any constitutional status at all for people who are homeless? and can you criminalize behaviors that the homeless must engage in such as sleeping in public? >>

i'm ryan yamamoto. every on this day, san francisco marks the moments when a 7.9 magnitude quake hit the city back in 1906. the event stands as a turning point for the city, highlighting the importance of disaster preparedness. this morning, city leaders and first responders held a ceremony on market street to commemorate the event. a wreath was also late at that spot, dedicated to the memory of late senator dianne feinstein and those who died in the devastation also. there was also a procession to the gold painted fire hydrant on 20th and church streets. this is near dolores park where it received a fresh new coat . on this day of reflection, we know many volunteers work hard to preserve history. that hydrant was reportedly one of the very few that still supplied water at that time to help fight the fires after the quake. sheriff paul neah moto was at that wreath ceremony and take a listen to why he says this moment was so special. >> we need everyone to help when things like that happen, remembering w

i'm ryan yamamoto is a busy morning for san francisco firefighters battling a 2 alarm fire as heavy smoke and flames destroyed this 3 story building in presidio heights. it happened in the area of lyon in clay streets all around 445. this morning. about 60 firefighters responded to the blaze. vacant 6 unit residential building appeared to be under renovation. you can see huge. flames coming off the roof of this building with the fire, ripping through all floors of the structure. as a precaution, firefighters did have to evacuate people living in the surrounding buildings and the smoke was so heavy other residents in the area were asked to shelter in place. we spoke to 1 neighbor who lives across the street, and she says she has never seen a fire like this. >>>>just huge flames. you know, obviously on the coming off the roof and it looked like it could quickly spread. and so you kind of wonder. you know, >reporter>you have to >>>>what's going on, but the fire department was amazing. with getting your right away and just getting the flames contained. immediately. >ryan>well, thankfully, no
