ryan young is in detroit. white house task force predicts that the next few weeks are the deadliest. how is michigan preparing with so many health care workers infected? >> reporter: well we're getting a lot of mixed messages, anderson. when you talk to people in the health care field they tell you stories that would scare you. one nurse said she only gets one set of ppe for the entire day for 12 hours and doesn't want to go to the bathroom and shed the ppe. when you think about the hospital and the beaumont health system, they have employees who have tested positive for the coronavirus and so you understand that the health care workers are being put under right now. but let us show you some video that was sort of just blew our mind. there were workers who basically did a walkout. they were upset there were not enough nurses to cover a shift. they were so upset they tried to make the hospital bring in more staff. when that didn't happen, some of the nurses decided to leave. now the hospital for its part said t

cnn's ryan young is in detroit.rs are staggering. >> reporter: john, the numbers are staggering and when you say them out loud, it will hit you. 959 people have died from the coronavirus in the state. to give you an idea how the city of detroit is struggling with it. there are 1400 ventilators are being used in the state. the data is getting better because the state is getting better at putting out more information. tl ci the city of detroit started sorting this by race yesterday. sinai grace, this was a video taken by some of the nurses there on sunday. they were upset with the staffing numbers that were there. they wanted more staff to be there and in fact they had a sit in because they want more staff. some decided to walk out. there had been people who died in the hallway there. the hospital is pushing back doing everything they can. healthcare workers are stressed and they are upset of the levels people are being taken care of. here at the tcs center which i am standing in front of. there will be more beds comi

ryan young is outside that mall, joining us right now. mall owner is moving ahead with this plan, are they expecting shoppers to actually show up? >> reporter: well, that's the plan so far, wolf. here's the thing. the stores may not all open up. there's some major tenants at the mall, and some have corporate policies where they've closed down. the owner thinks they can use it as a template for the rest of the country. maybe with temperature checks, or social distancing. we know people are antsy, and want to get back to shopping. but if you're a health care professional, you're worried about not being able to flatten the curve. we talked to both sides about this hot button issue. >> we looked at where things are headed, and maybe a good time to get them all up and running, but you need to have a soft opening, to start getting the stores back trained, developing best practices. we started with our retail brands to look at nebraska as a case study of how to interact with customers, brands, landlords, to work together to create a safe environ

ryan young is in detroit. ryan, what more are you learning about this hospital in detroit?> reporter: anderson, these numbers are tough to deal with when you think about 959 people have lost their lives so far to the coronavirus here in michigan. when you think about this hospital, sinai grace where we started hearing from the health care professionals talking about what they were seeing. in fact, having patients in the hallway who were sick, ventilators in the hallway, extension cords running to life-saving machines in the hallways as well. and then they also give us the information about people losing their lives in the hallway. the hospital is pushing back and saying, look, we're doing the best we can right now and we've actually started surging staff into place, but look at this video from sunday. this is from nurses who actually had to sit in on sunday. they were upset about the staffing levels there and some nurses were like, we don't want to work under these conditions. some of them left and had to bring in more nurses to help them out but to give you an idea of how

cnn's ryan young joining me from detroit. ryan, how is that sitting with people there who perhaps want to visit family members or friends? >> you know, fred, i think at first there were people who were breaking the order initially. this was done to make sure that people understand, look, we're trying to flatten the curve in the state. when you see the numbers of deaths on the rise, you can understand why the governor is trying to make it stronger. you go to a store here now, there's actually going to be on the floor, they'll have place marks for being six feet apart. when you walk in the store, only a certain number of people will be allowed in. all those plastic dividers across the country are also being added. but this is happening to try to flatten this curve. beyond all that, we've heard from families really dealing with the devastating effects of the coronavirus. we talked to one family who had to make the difficult decision. some family members weren't even able to go to a funeral because they were positive with the coro

cnn's ryan young went inside a hospital. stories. >> this is amazing to me how quickly people turn. they come in and suddenly, they looked okay. then they don't. >> reporter: at chicago's rush university medical center, doctors and nurses come to work to fight covid-19. >> i'm seeing all lined up in the hallway, waiting to be used. that's not anxiety-provoking at all. >> reporter: the work starts right as they walk in the door. >> they're trying to get her oxygen saturation improved and get her stabilized quickly. so this is kind of what happens when a patient comes in. you try to minimize the number of people that are in the room right now. you can see there's only three or four people in there. only the key people and they will try to get her stabilized so she doesn't need to be intubated and put on a ventilator. >> stress level is definitely high. i have difficulty sleeping at night. i think it's important to note that this affects the young and old. >> this is our area, see, don't enter unless you're taking care of our p

cnn's ryan young joining me from detroit. ryan, what more are you learning?> fred, you know, they are trying to stop people from going to -- let's say their cousin's house and saying hello to them and hanging out. that we saw over and over again. i talked to a funeral home director who says they're having several family members dying all at once from covid-19. you can understand the pain that so many people in this state are going through. over 21,000 people have tested positive. so many people have lost their lives. we want to show you these freezer trucks at the medical examiner's office. between thursday and friday, it was one of the most deadly days so far for the covid-19 in this area. 205 people died. lost their lives. it's been very painful. and, of course, as we continue to have this conversation, we've been reaching out to people in the community as we get closer to easter. one reverend is not only telling fe people to stay at home but these are showing the inequities across the city and the state, and he hopes this makes a lasting change moving forw

and ryan young is in detroit. >> we start at the white house. kristen, talk to us about how president trump says he's going to make the decision about restarting the economy. >> there are questions as to whether or not this is his decision to make. you have to keep in mind, despite multiple calls for him to issue some kind of nationwide lockdown, he never did and he put that on the governors. now, of course, it is the governors who will be the ones who can lift any sort of lockdown, or stay home order, that they actually put in place. but there is one caveat here, the fact that president trump is a powerful man. he's the president of the united states and there's a chance the governors will feel pressure, particularly republicans feeling pressure if president trump decides to reopen the economy, loosen restrictions. they may follow suit, even in states that haven't seen their peak. i talked to one state official who said he wasn't sure what he was going to do. he said it would require a lot of tap dancing on his part. i want to know president tr

cnn's ryan young joins me from detroit. how is that news being received in. >> reporter: fred, this is the first day of it. they'll try to see if they can flatten the curve here. obviously numbers were still going up in this area. hospitals have been dealing with more patients than they can handle and we do know that some hospital staff has also tested positive for the coronavirus. one thing to point out, right behind us is the tcf center with 970 beds. they put it online yesterday, the first 25 patients. we're told more patients will be coming in the next few days. we want to show you some of the grim things we've seen as well. these are the refrigerator trucks at the medical examiner's office. they are worried about running out of space. hospitals, funeral homes, and the medical examiner's office have all had to add body space because of the number of people dying. from thursday to friday we know 205 people died in the state. that was the deadliest day so far from covid-19. and taking it a step further we've noticed 40% o

cnn's ryan young joining me now from omaha. what more are you learning about their approach? >> fred, look, there's a lot of people who just want to see things get back to normal. you can understand that at this point. people want to go back to shopping, they want to go back to being a part of the retail industry. of course, there sore many folks who work here. the owner was basically giving them a chance to get back to work would be a good thing. here's the situation here, though. if you think about it, there's a lot of major anchor chains here. just because you open the mall back up doesn't mean some of the stores behind me will allow their employees to come back in. what they are doing is they want to do a phased sort opening from what we were explained. like to bring some of the employees back to start setting up, to set up a situation so when people come back they can do social distancing and allow certain numbers of people in at the same time. that soft opening will give them a chance to be able to look at this. the hospital association in this state, though, they are w

here's cnn's ryan young. >> it ain't going to go away like this. he didn't. but just know this. done the best that we could. >> reporter: these short cell phone videos of her husband ray shon's funeral are the only way she could see it from quarantine. she hasn't left her house since testing positive for the same virus that killed him. >> i didn't want hum to leave here alone. like i just file like he was there for everybody, and i feel like he was alone, like nobody was able to be there for him. i had to make an executive decision to keep myself and my daughter home. we don't want to go to another funeral. >> reporter: in the last few weeks, mariny, she and her brother have all tested positive for covid-19. >> people in the family started displaying flu-like symptoms. no idea it was corona, nothing like that, just hey, i don't feel so good. my husband, his symptom was a high fever. >> reporter: with strict social distancing rules in place, their trip to the hospital march 16 would be the last time she saw him. >> think was like you can't be here, you can't be here. they sent my

cnn's ryan young is in detroit.ell us how the city is managing this. >> reporter: it's very tough. obviously we're talking to some of these hospital workers who talk about dire circumstances that are spreading across the health care areas here in the city. just to give you an idea, right now there are 1400 ventilators in use in the state. 1200 are being used in the city of detroit. right behind me they're hoping the tcf center will help alleviate some of that. we're told the first 25 beds will be open on friday, and that's just tomorrow. but we're taking abo intalking disparities in this area. we talked to the form he governor of michigan, and she had some thoughts about what's going on. >> people understand public health front and center in a way they never did before. public health is invisible until there is a problem like a water issue or an environmental issue that exemplified how public health really plays a critical role in our lives every day and how we need to protect our communities in an impressive way. >

cnn's ryan young is live for us now in detroit. so, ryan, was this more an issue of people going back and forth between their own homes or is this a concern that i'm going to go visit my grandmother for easter because i don't want her to be alone? >> reporter: that's one of the things we're seeing, people wanted to get together for family gatherings. in fact, the police and detroit have had to break up several parties in the area because people want to get together as well. look, today's saturday. it's a beautiful day here in detroit, and we've seen nothing but people sort of walking around the lake front. we've seen them out, more so than we have in the last few days. but we also know these new restrictions apply to stores as well to try to keep people more separated. they're trying to flatten the curve but this is one of those stories that really hits you right in the heart because no matter where you go in the city, you meet someone who's had a loss and we talked to one family who had to make a decision about how many people coul

i want to bring in cnn's ryan young in detroit. ryan, you recently visited this hospital. are just shocking when you see them. >> reporter: yeah, this is a tough story, jake. in fact we've been working in this area for about two weeks now, talking to all the people who have been affected by covid-19. and what we started to do is, when we started talking to heroic first responders across the city, they started sharing stories with us. this is one of the groups who started talking about what was going on inside this hospital. i'm going to share some of the pictures here. some of it is disturbing. but the first picture is a room where we were told they had to store bodies here, maybe because they were starting to run out of other rooms. then another shot of a freezer where you can see bodies on top of each other. staff were mortified at what they were having to do. several er workers basically told us not only were they worried about staffing shortages and so many patients coming in, they were concerned about the patients who were there that they were trying to care for. but

ryan young is in detroit. ryan, these new travel guidelines, extremely strict.ou can't go from one household to another. tell us what is behind that and are people following it? >> reporter: absolutely, jim. they're doubling down on this right now, trying to make sure that more people don't get sick from the coronavirus. they're telling family members they don't want them traveling from one family house to the next, maybe even bringing food over to the next house. they want to make sure people don't get infected with the coronavirus and take it somewhere else. we have talked to folks who lost multiple family members and some of that comes from somebody being infected and not knowing it. going to another house and spreading it. in stores, going to increase restrictions as well. they want to make sure that one person per thousand square foot inside one of these stores, they're also going to have social distancing lines outside the store to let people in. we also wanted to show you something else, a grim reminder of what is going on here. look at this video from th

cnn's ryan young is live for us in detroit with more. the context of these photos, ryan. >> reporter: obviously very tough photos to look at. i can tell you over a few days my team and i have been working on this. we've been talking to health care professionals throughout the detroit area. there was a couple hospitals where we were getting information from them about some of the conditions they were working in. now we'll show you some of these photos. this was during a time when there was an influx of patients, and obviously thep tire area's been hit very hard by croovid-1 there were patients dying in the hallway. they also had so many bodies they didn't know where to put them at one point. and you can see them in this one room where it's a sleep study room. they placed them in there for a period of time. but it's the freezer room that really caught our attention where you can see the bodies stacked on top of each other. some of the staff there became so upset they started reaching out to us. they didn't think there was enough to prepara

. >> let's bring in senior national correspondent ryan young. an, this is the question at the time, were people forced to choose between their health and voting? what does this tell you? >> we saw the long lines, we saw the people's dedication to their right to vote. people fought and died for it, and obviously people stood in line for it. the lines stretched it seemed like forever in some of these polling places, but there was the fight to maybe move it to june, but then they wanted it on april 7. not all the data is back yet, so we're not sure if this is going to be more people who ended up getting infected by standing in line. of course, you want to do social distancing, but when you looked at the lines, you could tell people weren't always doing the social distancing, not everyone showed up with a face mask, so there was all these critical questions without the data back yet, how many people could be exposed to this virus by standing in that line over and over again? it was a decision people felt like they had to make if they wanted to vote,

ryan young, what's going on there, what's the situation? >> reporter: you know this is difficult. we have been here for more than two weeks at this point. we have been talking to healthcare workers since we arrived here and giving us different stories of what's going on at each individual hospital. sinai grace hospital, we had several workers talking to us. there was a walk out there last sunday. we want to show you photos and some of them are difficult to look at. these are photos we obtained from emergency room workers. two other emergency workers confirmed the photos are accurate and it is a portrayal from the scene of the hospital during early april. what we told that they got influx of patients. when patients start to die, the influx putting on a strain of the emergency. how they're trying to restore some of the bodies and in the freezer room, you can see some of the bodies stacked on top of each other. very grim site and there was another room where they had hospital deabeds where they wer laying out some of the people dead. all these we are told during a 12-hour shift withi

cnn's ryan young is on the scene for us. ryan, what's the latest there? >> reporter: wolf, statewide almost 959 people have died from the coronavirus in this state. 40% of those folks who died are african-americans. a lot of conversation today about protection, testing, and of course inequity. that's what the mayor addressed today. >> nine years of my life at the detroit medical center. i was running the hospital system that saw more uninsured, more medicaid patients, more african-american patients than any hospital system certainly in the midwest. and we fought this every single day. >> reporter: so how do you stop this, that's the big question. bus drivers met with the mayor today because they lost one of their own. one of the things they're doing inside the buses right now, they're handing out surgical masks to anyone who gets on and they're trying to get that critical ppe on bus drivers as well. wolf, we haven't hit the peak yet but the numbers are still very high in the state. >> they certainly are, ryan, thank you. >>> let's go to chicago. officials

. >> i am ryan young. half of the cases are located in the city. john hopskins university, more than 15,000 people tested positive. what we also learned what hit the city really hard, 180 officers and firefighters. they were not sure about their status. 150 have been able to returned to service and 30 responders have tested positive. >> reporter: i am diane gallagher. the public health commission announcing a voluntary curfew begins tonight and going through may 4th, telling people returning at home. no grocery shopping and exercises, nothing it is deemed as essential activity related to the pandemic. the date could be extended further if they need to. they want people to stay-at-home to help flatten the curve. >> 500 beds in total at this point but the eventually goal of 3,000. it is a place that's ready but it is a place that officials say they hope they don't have to use this as the state continues to push for more supplies. if it is significant impact is not made, their resources could be overwhelmed by the end of the week. >> our kr krocorresp

. >>> i am ryan young in detroit. not only icu beds are of a shortage here but people and families start to feel real pain. you can't have large funerals and you have to limit the list of people who they can bring to funerals and there is even talks of having to do with streaming funerals. >>> i am ed lavandera in new orleans, one of the issues that health experts are looking at closely here in louisiana is the higher death rate in the new orleans area in particular. one official here in the city says mortality rate has been up 5%. r one of the root causes underneath all of that is the poor health of this region. according to the united health foundation, the state of louisiana ranks 49th in overall health of large number of cases of obesity and kidney problems and diabetes and those sorts of under lining factors which complicate treatments if you are infected with the coronavirus. >> we'll check in with all of our correspondents throughout the day. i will speak with one intensive care nurse of what she's experiencing

ryan young joins me from detroit. when we look at this, what really led to this new ban? it is really about people traveling from their regular home to their vacation home? or is there more to it? >> reporter: there's parts of this. they're trying to fight this and flatten the curve. that's been the big conversation here. but you have a relative that's sick, you are allowed to go and help care for them. they're trying to discourage people walking across the street and hanging out with neighbors. in detroit, police officers have had to break up house parties. today, i've been talking about this before, it's been a beautiful day. there's more traffic today than any other day before that. you can bike, you can jog, but they don't want people standing closer than six feet. and the system here has been stressed to capacity. hospital beds are in short supply. the tcf center has added 25 extra beds that just opened up yesterday. but the capacity for this is over 970 beds. but the mayor of detroit talked about some of the issues surrounding all these problems in the city of detro

cnn's ryan young is live from detroit with this. ryan, what are you hearing about this there? >> reporter: well, the stories here are starting to just sort of have a ripple effect throughout the community. and to view this differently, kate, in our travels throughout the city we've talked to several people over the last week and a half and they are sort of terrified by what they are seeing. in fact, when we talk to people, they say, first, initially, they thought this would skip over different parts of community but in a emergency room doctor he said this is ripping off the band aid throughout the city because health care officials are seeing people come into the e.r. sicker and sicker and folks waited longer because they couldn't afford health care and didn't want to go to the hospital. by the time they arrive, they're almost too sick to treat in a lot of cases. we went to a morgue, the funeral home, they had 60 covid bodies in one location and having to expand. when you talk about the numbers getting closer and closer to 900 people dying from covid-19. anywhere you go in the

. >> reporter: i'm ryan young in detroit. at critical care needs of the state and city. 959 people have lost their lives to covid-19, but the story now also shifting to the hospitals in this area and fact that some of them are at their breaking point. we learned 1400 ventilators are in use in the state. 1,200 are being used in the city of detroit. but there's also a hospital called sinai grace. we learned there workers there are upset about the conditions. on sunday there was a walk out by nursing staff because they were so upset by what they were seeing. the hospital for its part said they started surging in health care workers to fix things in that area but we're still getting information from the workers there that they think that patients are not getting the kind of care they deserve. >> thank you. so 16.8 million americans filing unemployment claims since last month. that also means across the country hundreds upon hundreds are lining up every day. just look at these lines. pennsylvania, ohio, many other places waiting h

. >> let's go to ryan young. michigan's governor briefed reporters earlier today.hat did you learn? >> reporter: she did and she extended the stay at home order for the rest of the month. the numbers are still growing. today over 1,000 deaths. 1400 ventilators are being used in michigan. 1200 are being used in detroit. as he would talk to more and more people, you can see there are families being hit with this virus all at once. funeral director said three and four hundred people are dying within homes. mt. sinai hospital said there are patients in the hallways and they lost patients in the hallways because they were so busy. the hospital is pushing back saying they are trying to get more workers in the area so there is adequate staffing, but people are concerned about the overthrow. we know tomorrow at the overflow arena, there will be 25 beds operable. there will be 970 more, but they will scale up slowly as they get more staff. national guard will be sending people in. >>> california is gaining praise for slowing the spread. what are they doing right? i had my m

cnn's ryan young is joining us now from detroit. ryan, i would imagine there is a little pushback there from folks within the state. >> we'll have to see exactly what happens, erica. thursday to friday was one of the toughest days here. you had 205 people lose their lives to covid-19. but something we've noticed is we've seen more traffic in the last two days sort of around town than we did the initial day. so now you have another three weeks on the stay-at-home order but you still see more people out. at one point they were taking the basketball hoops off goals at certain parks because people were still going out to play. they are trying to get the word out for people to stay home and also have stores putting in some distance requirements so when you show up to the store only a certain number of people can be in the store at a time and then there is a line, they have six feet apart. they want people to stand apart. that is not helping just yet because it seems like some people are starting to bristle with the idea of staying inside

ryan young joining me from detroit. ryan, what more are you learning about this? >> reporter: they're trying to flatten the curve. one thing we noticed, a lot of hospitals put under a lot of stress. the tcs center behind me has extra beds. we're seeing a large ramp up of operations here. for families this is tough, it's not about numbers. it's about loved ones and difficult decisions they have to make. >> he didn't want to go away like this. he did. but just know this. we done the best that we could. >> reporter: these short cell phone videos of her husband's funeral were the only way she could see it from quarantine. >> his name is ra sean smith. >> she hasn't left her house since testing positive for the virus. >> i didn't want him to be alone. nobody was able to be there for him. i had to make the decision to keep myself and my daughter home. we don't want to go to another funeral. >> reporter: in the last three weeks marie says she, her father and her brother have all tested positive for covid-19. >> people in the family started displaying flu-like symptoms. n

let's go to ryan young who joins us from detroit. governor whitmer in so many ways has been on the front line of this, at first, pleading essentially for supplies, pushing back at the president's claim now that he alone has the power to order the governors reopen their states. >> reporter: yeah, poppy, something i've watched since i've been here. she doesn't mince any words when it comes to protecting the people of the state. one of the things she's done is extend the stay at home order through the end of the month. people were upset last week when she said she couldn't buy paint or certain supplies from stores, but she said she was doing this to make sure people were safe. take a listen to her words as she just said yesterday. >> the government doesn't get opened up via twitter. it gets opened up at the state level. i've been in contact with a lot of my fellow midwestern governors on this subject specifically because we recognize that we have to have good data, we have to have a good plan, we got to make sure that we avoid a second w

we have ryan young in detroit, ed lavandera in new orleans, omar jimenez in chicago. d athena jones back with us in new york city. ryan, first, to detroit, the numbers there as in so many other places remarkable, what do officials attribute this to? >> we know one of the things we have been talking about, jim, in ter terms of community leaders, a slow rollout in terms of the information, in terms of spreading throughout the community. a lot of people saw the internet and believed that the coronavirus could not be spread through the black community. there were other people who were worried about the older people in the community who had issues with heart disease, diabetes, and that's where we really saw this taking hold. in fact, we went to a funeral home on saturday, who told us basically they were at capacity already. they were worried about the spread, but unlike other cities, like chicago, where they have a database by zip code, we don't have that bit of information just yet in terms of what communities are being hit hard by zip code. we talked to doctors who say th

. >>> ryan young joins in detroit. the henry ford health system is rolling out a relatively large scale study to try to look at the effectiveness of what elizabeth was just talking about, hydroxychloroquine on covid-19 patients. enrollment in the program started last week. i know there was some confusion who it was for, just for, they have over 800 health care workers at the hospital system that have been diagnosed with this. is it just for them or is it for any patient that wants to try? >> reporter: so they kind of focused it here, not only, sorry, i'm hearing myself here. it's for the 3,000 health care workers and first responders throughout the metro detroit area. they want to see if they can give them sort of a guard against the covid-19. anyone who is enrolled in this double blind study cannot have any symptoms of covid-19 and can't have already had covid-19. they want to have those first responders volunteer for this, they will go through an eight-week study. some will get a placebo and as they move forward look
