cnn's ryan young joins us now by phone with the latest. ryan, explain what exactly has gone on. the latest i had is there there were three -- two dead on the scene and one dead at a hospital from a place called young's asian imagine in acworth, georgia, and two other massage spas, one called a therapy spa which seemed very close to each other. there were three people killed and then one other person killed at another spa. so explain what is going on. >> right, so anderson, what we've learned from this information so far, acworth is in cherokee county. that's where the initial shooting happened. it sort of unclear exactly what took place. we don't know if someone walked inside and started shooting and that's where the first three people were killed or at least two people were shot and then one person maybe showed up to a hospital. then the information that's about 47-minute ride from the second shooting scene, the second shooting scene was a spa very close to buckhead. if you know atlanta very well, that's a busy area. this is a very busy intersection where these two spas are loca

ryan young is in atlanta. ryan, it is early in this, but there's a suspect. what do the police know at this point? >> well, we know the suspect is robert long, a 21-year-old from woodstock, georgia, just outside the city of atlanta. we know he was captured last night when the georgia state patrol performed a pit maneuver. that's a maneuver where the police officers get behind a car. they use their car to bump the suspect's vehicle and send it out of control. they were able to arrest him and so far, we are not sure if he's talking to investigators. the big question right now also is, will he have his first court appearance today or tomorrow? and it will be interesting to see in that court filing whether or not there will be any new information in terms of what he's been able to share with investigators as far as the motive is concerned. we know police have been able to piece a lot of the information together based upon video evidence. that's why that suspect picture was put out so quickly after the first shooting around 5:00 yesterday afternoon. and they were

bringing in now ryan young who has been covering this for us from atlanta. good evening to you. this suspect has been charged with murder. six of the eight victims were asian women. what is the latest on the investigation? the suspect's motives? what do you know? >> yeah. think about where we were last night at this time. we had so many questions about this and i still think tonight, there are more investigative parts that we have to figure out. we do know the sheriff's department has been appointmenting to maybe a sex addiction that this suspect had, robert long. they're saying because of the sex addiction, he then wanted to come to places and open fire because he was trying to avoid that. that was one of the things so puzzling when we heard that come out. i want to point this out. we've been talking about the suspect. sort of highlighting some of the people kill. that's what the focus should be on. the names, we don't have the chases just yet. we've seen atlanta pouring out in terms of flowers and other sites. we're just across the street where three other women were killed. t

cnn national correspondent ryan young is in atlanta following this story. ryan, the suspected gunman's court appearance was today, but then it was canceled. why was it canceled? >> reporter: yeah, it looks like his lawyer decided to forego that first court appearance and of course we were hoping to learn some sort of information from that, maybe see some documents from the sheriff's department there. we know the sheriff's department has put in work, getting in touch with that shooter's family and that's what helped bring this to a close so quickly because they were able to track him down through his movements after he left cherokee county. not sure now that he has a lawyer that he's no longer talking to authorities because investigators wanted to talk to him. there are so many people in this community, though, who want to start focusing and moving the focus on the victims of this case. we've heard countless, numerous times that they want to hear their stories because obviously, they feel like those people did not deserve what exactly happened. but we do know

we have a reporter there, cnn's ryan young is live this morning in atlanta. ities are saying about this. i know there is a suspect in custody. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. look, they've been working on this case throughout the evening here. we were here last night as investigators were still combing the street, looking for shell casings and talking to people who were in the area of this shooting. this is a very busy road here in atlanta and that's one of the places where the shooting happened at the gold spa across the street there. that's where at least three of the victims were shot and killed, there was another victim that was across the street. this all started in cherokee county, the shooting starting around 5:30. that's how police got that video that they had of the suspect and car they were looking for. that car which sped away which was eventually found two hours away from atlanta, that's when the georgia state patrol was able to perform a pit maneuver to knock that suspect off the road. we are told he is a 21-year-old man from woodstock, they were a

our ryan young joins us this morning in atlanta. what do you know about the victims, eight total, six of them asian. what can you tell us? >> reporter: so far, very little information is coming out about the victims except, besides their races. of course, what we've been told so far is at least six of the people killed are asian. of course, we're trying to move forward with parts of this investigation. we do know in the next half hour or so police are expected to have a news conference. this will be the first one they'll have jointly with the jurisdictions involved in this. you've got to realize, this happened in several different areas. we do basically have cherokee county sheriff's department and the atlanta police department involved. if you look behind me, that's one of the spas they focused on. they arrested 21-year-old robert long. he was taken into custody after police were able to get out some of the pertinent information yesterday shortly after the shooting about the car he was driving and what he looked like. georgia state

so let's go right to cnn's ryan young. ryan, good evening to you. now assisting with this investigation. what can you tell us? >> reporter: don, we know that robert long has been arrested in this case. we're told he's 21 years old. that's what the cherokee county sheriff's department released that information early in the evening. we do know there was a chase involved in this and georgia state patrol actually used a p.i.t. maneuver. that's when a trooper uses his car to bump the car and send it out of control. we're not sure if he said anything to authorities about the motive behind this case, but obviously police from several different jurisdictions are working with the theory that all these shootings are connected. now, as i step out of the way here, you can still see the active crime scene. these shootings started around 5:00 this afternoon, don. we know they first happened in cherokee county where four people were shot and killed. and then there are two different scenes here. if you look far to your left here, you can see that one spa right here

ryan young is joining me right now. ryan, that police briefing just wrapped up.y did release quite a lot of information. >> reporter: kate, i'm just surprised by how much information we've gotten so far in this case. you can really see the coordination that was involved in bringing the suspect to justice in terms of being able to capture him yesterday. this entire area was put on alert after the shootings occurred. we are standing in atlanta. the original shooting happened in cherokee county which is about 47 minutes away from here. i can tell you this busy road behind me was shut down as investigators started to conduct this investigation. if you think about this, the cherokee county sheriff's department which released that picture and suspect description and a vehicle description, they were aided by the suspect's parents apparently, and they were able to give them pest meant information so they can start this tracking process. we were then told that they thought the suspect was moving toward florida. they were able to set up in a county for the georgia state pa
