"there were a lot of fish a rye patch. thousands and thousands of fish died in this event." in early october... ndow biologist brad bauman started investigating the fish kill. the answer at first... seemed obvious. "when we do have fish die-offs in northern nevada like this, most of the time it is due to low dissolved oxygen levels." but that wasn't the case... this time. tests showed oxygen levels were low... but not deadly. bauman to a similar case in texas... in the 1980s. "in the end we discovered that it is a species of algae called golden algae." the drought had created the perfect storm in rye patch. the water was stagnant. low in oxygen. high in salinity. and cold. all factors essential in a golden algae bloom. "the reservoir is incredibly low. it is only about 10-percent full which means when the golden algae infection started, it was able to spread quickly leaving all these fish dead in little to no time." it happened at rye patch reservoir... between lovelock and winnemucca. golden algae attaches to a fish's gills and prevents it from breathing. right now... just about every fish in the lake, has died. biologists hope when the reservoir gets fresh water... and as the temperature increases... the water will become "other algaes start competing with this algae and it is held at lower numbers that does not effect the fish, so it will always be in the system, but hopefully at lower numbers once we get fresh water." there are plans to stock the reservoir with fish this coming summer.... but most of those will be small. it could take years to rebuild the lake-- to the trophy fishery that it was---- prior to the algae bloom. ### there won't be a new trial for a nevada trucking firm, for the deadly amtrak crash in 2011. a federal judge decided to uphold the 2014 decision made by a u-s district court jury. the jury decided the truck driver wasn't paying attention; and was to blame for the crash outside fallon. the driver was killed along with five people on the ca
