let's see what happens here. >> who is winning this fight, s.e.?well, it's -- it's actually hard to say because if you look at the polls of registered republicans, most republicans are not with donald trump. most republicans, upwards of 70%, are split among other candidates. so if jeb's calculating i'm going to reach and talk to those guys, the people who actually care about your conservative record, then i think jeb is in it sort of with a long game in mind. i think what jeb has to do, and i see him sort of doing this, he's now attacking trump, especially with trump's new tax plan on his liberalism. i think you go against -- against his -- the narrative that he's anti-establishment, and i think the new tax plan is a perfect way to do that. raising taxes on the wealthy, i would say, if i were bush, sounds like something hillary clinton would do, you know. you have to make the case, donald trump, that you're actually anti-establishment when you've been voting for and donating to and supporting establishment politicians for most of your life. i think

s.e. cupp or political capital at a timer ryan is lizzie and senior political reporter nia-malika henderson. dr. carson just mentioned it the new he beats her 51% to 46% in this hypothetical matchup. what do you make of that? >> well he's clearly had a very good summer. on the one hand you've seen him climb in the polls, and he's going head to head in many ways with trump at this point. the opposite is certainly true. she's taking it live. i think she's down ten points since the last poll. in talking to carson's people they feel like he's kind of running a race in some ways like donald trump, a slow and steady race. he has a demeanor that's very much opposite of what donald trump's sort of demeanor is. sometimes you have to lean in close, he speaks so softly. and one of the things i also they that he could possibly challenge a hillary clinton on is african-american voters. his people at the he could get maybe 15% of the african-american vote and that could eat into whatever the democrat wo

s.e., am i wrong about that? >> well, you're right, it's completely uninforceable and it's almost sort of a pr document. i love reince. he's a fellow packer fan, but i actually think this was a big mistake. you know, the rnc's job is to protect the future of the republican party and donald trump has made it very clear he doesn't really care about the future of the republican party or any other party. his supporters, as dana had mentioned, don't want him to run as a republican, and so forcing him essentially to sign a marriage document, you know, a marriage contract to the republican party, i think it puts people like jeb bush in a really tough spot. jeb bush has been out on the campaign trail yelling at the top of his lungs that donald trump is not a republican. he's not one of us. he's not like us. he's not conservative. and now essentially we have a document saying that donald trump is going to run as a republican, he's joined the republican party. i think that's a really big gift to democrats who are trying to

s.e., i want to talk to you. this new poll shows trump dominating the gop field. it's 27% support. that's up from -- up by 10 points since july. i wonder, in this climate of anti-washington sentiment, throw the bums out kind of sentiment, do you see in those numbers evidence that voters would prefer an entertainer to a typical washington politician? >> trulmp is doing well at the moment. he is also the candidate most republicans would not vote for. i think that registered is republicans who are responding to poll calls are divide on this. some like the entertainment and like donald trump is a so-called outsider. i wouldn't go so far as to call him anti-establishment. i think he has been cozy with the establishment. i think the rest of the republican voters recognize that he is probably unelectable in a general election. the angst over washington ins e insiders existed in 2012 as well, remember. and conservatives weren't all that happy with mitt romney. he still won the nomination. he didn't go on to win the general election. but for better or worse, the establishment candidate or c

. >> s.e. cupp. >> i agree. it's really hard to meet very high expectations.he beat them. she came in with incredibly high expectations. she performed incredibly well, she was quick on her feet. i like what she did. every opportunity she got, she laid out incredibly substantive policy points. they weren't even asked for and she went -- she knew how valuable her time was. she wasn't going to use it with platitudes. she was going to use it with policy points that i don't think any of the other candidates matched. and frankly weren't even demanded. >> she definitely came into this well prepared with some definite ideas in mind with how to make her mark. >> absolutely. the policies really stood out. we're definitely going to see headlines that carly was a big winner. i also think rubio. he had a similar strategy of really showing he was the better candidate on some of the big issues they care about. namely i thought they stood out on national security and foreign policy. the other headline is that trump actually -- he took some punches tonight. he was knocked down
