joining me is larry sabato, director of university of virginia center for politics. to have you with me as we delve into those numbers. your reaction to the poll that shows 12% for gary johnson who was just nominated a couple weeks ago at their convention? >> a couple things. we've had many polls recently with gary johnson included. he ranges from about 6% support to this, 12%. it haven't seen anything over 12. you have to be at 15% in a series of polls come september to get into the presidential debates which is absolutely critical to any third party's hopes. could he do it? sure he can do it. let's remember that most, not all, but most tend to deflate as we approach the general election campaign and actual election day. >> earlier on gary johnson, when we were interviewing here would say, you know what, when it comes to those who have never heard of him, he needs to be in the polls. now we're seeing more of him, do you think they'll get more traction now that we're seeing more of a divide for those who say they will not vote for donald trump and will not vote for h

larry sabato. dr. sabato, exciting time for you.ng on this almost since the last election ended. so now we have some states that could change the calculus. give me an idea of what the states are. >> okay. brian, there are two pathways for donald trump that are realistic. that are reasonable. to get to 270. the assumption has to be by him and his campaign that he carries all of the romney states that's 206 electoral votes and yes, that includes north carolina. never easy for either side and then he has to turn the states turning blue. the first pathway is easy, focus on ohio, the key swing state, which is then right in terms -- been right in picking the presidential winner the last 30 times and no republican has ever won the presidency without ohio. add to that florida which obama won narrowly twice. the key blue state that i think trump has got to turn to win and that's pennsylvania. he's got to focus on his base which is white, blue collar workers. and there are plenty of them in pennsylvania. >> did anything change about pennsylva

and also with us, larry sabato, professor of politics at the university of virginia.any way? does this play into this narrative we're hearing from trump, calling her crooked hillary? >> well, it certainly plays into the narrative. the evidence looks bad. the stalling, the delays, the clear evidence that this -- that raj was unqualified for the position, the stonewalling. all of it looks bad and plays into the narrative. it's compounded, of course, by the e-mail scandal. it's compounded by all the questionable clinton foundation questions that have been raised -- or issues, rather, that have been raised over the last few years. whether it will have an impact on her campaign remains to be seen. largely because, there are so many other issues of ethics overshadowing the campaign. one thing i'm going to add, though, is we don't -- we can't look at this in a vacuum. it's really important to recognize that all presidential campaigns, all presidential administrations, all state departments have things where people sort of pay to play, where people leverage relationships to g

the manager of larry sabato's crystal ball at the university of virginia's center for politics, how closeia between sanders and clinton? where do you score it? >> i think california is very close. clinton has led basically every poll, bust most recent ones showed the margin as low as 2 points. crystal ball we built a model that tried to predict what the outcome would be. our model came out with clinton plus 2 which mirrors a lot of the polls. one thing to watch tonight is california is so symbolic for sanders. clinton is already the presumptive nominee according to a.p. but we'll see early results come in and there are indications clinton will do well in the early voting and absentee voting, so clinton may jump out to a big lead. so sanders may chip away at that. voting may take several days. bill: that's the first time i heard that. not just a late night, but a slate week. >> for the democrat sick side for the delegates it doesn't matter so much who wins if it's close they end up splitting the delegates. this is sanders public relations making the argument superdelegates should switch. i

larry sabato and john avalof av. larry, what do you make of this?aster for the trump campaign. that campaign is deeply troubled. it goes well beyond corey lewandowski and whether he is campaign manager. campaigns simply don't work well with a two-headed or three-headed hydra. he was kind of co-campaign manager with paul manafort, but, carol, it's so much more than that. this is a campaign that is under funded, that isn't properly organized. the convention itself is questionable in terms of what it's going to produce and how it's going to produce it, and the clinton campaign is simply light years ahead of the trump campaign. clinton is on air right now with a 20-plus million dollar advertising campaign in virtually every swing state, and trump exactly zero is being spent on television, which is the easy part and the right thing to do right now. >> well, here is a possible reason why. cnn has done some reporting. donald trump right now has $2.4 million in the bank. $2.4 million in the bank. that's in addition to $14 million he raised in unsolicited do
