but now rolling stone is backtracking on its bombshell report an rape on campus written by one sabrina rubin erdely based on one source, a come called jackie. the magazine then releases this statement. there appear to be discrepancies in jackie's account and we come to the cop collusion that our trust in her was misplaced. with me, judith miller. all right, judy, she comes forward, says he's raped and the national magazine almost takes down a university, a fraternity. the guys in the fraternity easily identifiable. how does this happen? >> it's the question that every journalist in new york, washington, across the nation is asking. rolling stone has a reputation, well-deserved reputation for investigative hard hitting take no prisoner stories. >> really? >> it absolutely does. and i long ago wrote an article for them, one, truth in advertising within and they were great to work with and they were very thorough. they had fact checker pps well it turns out that last year, because rolling stone, like all magazines is under budgetary pressure fired a lot of the people who made the quality

what do we know about the reporter, sabrina? they feel strongly about sexual assault and found a tale of sexual assault and we have stats from our recent interview. >> i thought it was important to tell a story in a graphic way like jackie tells. we start are mired in euphimism. and i thought it was important to show that it was not just misconduct, but it was a violent crime. >> it is true. but the reporter may have fallen in a trap and a lot of investigative reporters fall in love with the story and source, that you minimize any conflicting information or discrepancies of the account and the editors did not back her up. you have interesting information and you haven't done enough reporting and make sure you reach the men before making the serious accusations. >> it is not only damming to the men who are accused of carrying out the heinous acts but extremely damming by uva. the university is embarrassed by this. they don't know if it happen. and they have suspended the frat activities and ruining the time in the college and any

why did the reporter sabrina, not get or try harder to find out what the men were accusing the men on campus. they knew who the guys are. and we have basic details questioned and jackie's own friends not believing her account. and rolling stones brushed away the questions and what you read is not a retraction, but throwing up your hands and saying we are not sure we can believe that story and it absolutely rocked the university of virginia campus. that story happens to be on their website at this hour. how normal is that? don't you usually take that down when there are questions of this magnitude? >> i think we are seeing the final stages here, the lawyer for the fraternity who is coming out with a at the same time and i think we, the rolling stones will not have much choiceç buto retract the story. it is impossible with no names in the story other than jackie's first name to disprove what happened. but those who are trying and carrying out good journalism, the way that rolling stones presented the story, it is not the way it went down. >> we'll hear more about this. and we have reco

it turns out this kind of questionable journalism may not be new to sabrina reuben erdely. >> do youst kind of really want to expose a certain situation or topic and then kind of like shop around for a -- for like a more concrete story that would like -- that would be better for print? >> yes. i absolutely do. it's very hard when you find a topic and then you want to find the story, because then you have to find like the right story and you wind up sort of preinterviewing a whole bunch of people. it's almost like they are doing tryouts. >> greg, you were a magazine editor for a while, did anybody like this happen to you, somebody bring you a story that was full of holes? >> stuff that was plagiarized or fake quotes. that's pretty bad. what they are basically saying it doesn't matter if the facts aren't there, because it's true somewhere. this particular case may be false, but somewhere else this is happening. well, if that's true, you should find that story. there were 14 english girls raped and that was kept silent for ten years. you can chase that story. >> in england. >> instead o
