i knew going into the trial that tracy martin and sabrina fulton, trayvon martin's parents, they told me they were not going to really make comments during the trial about what was going on. we sat down and had an extensive interview before the trial began for about an hour. i asked what if there is an acquit tal because they invested so much in expecting something would happen. they staid they recognize there could be an acquittal and that it would be in god's hands when it actually went to the point if there was an acquittal and they would accept that. sabrina fulton told me that she found it hard to believe with what she understood of the evidence that there could be an acquittal but by the same token she said that what she wanted all along was for the system to treat her son the way she believes anybody would be treated and that included a thorough investigation and arrest an actual charging document which was second-degree murder and they add a charge of manslaughter. and a trial. and so she said if we get that, if we get all those things in the system, we get what we were asking

he wanted sabrina fulton to somehow admit that her son's death was his own fault.-- >> i don't think so. >> you're asking that question in front of five mothers. you can play the tape. that was his question, and it was ridiculous. it was terrible. >> sunny, i don't think you -- >> let me finish. the way it's handled is the way that the state handled the cross-examination of george zimmerman's mother, with respect. he didn't ask any of those kinds of questions. he barely asked any questions. and it didn't hurt him and it didn't help him. >> o'mara had some choice words for the lead prosecutor. i just want to play that for the viewers. >> i have concerns about the discovery perspective. my view of information we were supposed to get from prosecutors is a much different definition than he is. >> reporter: so he's a liar? >> i think that he has a -- i think he's probably more used to running against public defenders in cases that he gets to cherry pick and that he has overwhelming evidence. and that some of the nuances of how he handles discovery don't come to light. i

i find it difficult to interview sabrina fulton.s a mom, i look at her for a few minutes, and i want it cry. but she holds herself together so well. but you can see under the surface how much pain she is in. has it helped her at all it see the protest, to see how much people have fallen in love with her son. people say this is our child. has that helped her at all? has it helped tracy at all? >> they really wanted to have the killer of their child, teenage son held accountable but they won't let this verdict define him and they won't say his death was not in vein and one of the things that sabrina also told me was that when you really think about it, everybody knows trayvon's name. and we want to make sure they know it for the right reasons, that he was a human being on this earth. he has every right it walk where he legally had a right to do so. breath, and had the right not to be pro filed and pursue and killed. and those are very important things she wanted to get out to everybody who would listen, that my son had a right to walk

arthel: perhaps not before calling sabrina fulton to the stand, trayvon martin's mother.ny have on jurors? >> well, that's a great question because, you know, obviously, everybody on all sides of the courtroom are very, very sympathetic to anybody who's lost a life in their family. and so, you know, the defense probably will not question her much at all, and she's going to definitely have quite an impact. however, if you were going to ask her one question, you would just say, you know, ma'am, you're not familiar with exactly what took place that night in the encounter, and you sit down, and that's it. arthel: so that's not what they're going to ask her. they're going to ask her is that her son's voice yelling on that tape? >> let me just say this, i'm glad you mentioned that because it was so interesting. when the voice expert said he couldn't identify the scream, he then said a relative could. but then came the brutal knockout punch i want to throw in the, but he said there's what's called listener bias, and that sets up an unbelievable argument for the defense. arthel:

. >> about sabrina fulton and tracy martin, i've had a chance to interview sabrina fulton and, you knowinning that what they wanted at the outset was an arrest. they wanted george zimmerman to at least be brought in, arrested and held accountable. the next thing they wanted was a trial. and they wanted a trial by jury. they were very concerned about a stand your ground hearing where george zimmerman could have gotten off by -- gotten off free and immune from future prosecution. and sabrina fulton told me in february when i interviewed her that once -- now that the case was going before a jury, that they would live with the jury verdict. and that's all that they wanted. and now that we have the verdict, i'm not surprised by how sabrina fulton and tracy martin are handling themselves. they're handling themselves now the way they've always handled themselves. with dignity and respect. >> meachum. >> kendall, can i ask you quickly, do you see any action on the stand your ground laws, on the gun legislation side of this coming out of the outrage other the decision? >> not in florida. as you

joining me now is the sabrina fulton, tracy martin and attorney benjamin crump. >> how are you olding up? >> it's very difficult. >> tracy, for you? >> it's tough. we're trying to stay strong. we understand we have to stay strong for each other, our families and we continue to take it one day at a time. >> you were there in the trial every day, and at times you had to leave because some of the testimony was too hard to hear. but were there days where you just thought, i can't go there today? or i can't do this? >> no, i never thought that. every morning i got up with trayvon in mind, and i said i have to do this. i have to go. i have to just withstand just the trial process. so i made myself go. it was no doubt in my mind that i needed to be there. there were times not necessarily the testimony but a lot more the pictures for me, the 911 call where it just seemed so final. the pictures that the medical examiners, the pictures of the site, those things were more hurtful to me. and sometimes i could sit through it and at times i just needed to just go by myself and just say a prayer and

. >> gladys zimmerman testifies after sabrina fulton told the court what she heard. >> that screamingyelling, do you recognize that? >> yes. >> and who do you recognize that to be, ma'am? >> trayvon benjamin martin. >>reporter: martin's oldest brother testified the screams were from his brother. in cross-examination, he was put on the spot for once telling a reporter he wasn't positive who was screaming later to conclude it was trayvon martin. for most of day nine, jurors listened to the medical examiner who did the autopsy on martin. >> i believe he was alive for one to ten minutes after he was shot. >> reporter: but when challenged by the defense, he admitted he only recently reached that opinion. just three weeks earlier, he thought martin was alive one to three minutes after the shooting. they pointed out how the team damaged or mishandled evidence. >> i do not have any recall. i do not have any memory of the day of autopsy. >> reporter: attorney mark o'mara asked the judge to acquit his client arguing prosecutors have not proven second degree murder. the judge denied the motion.

>> do you agree with jeff that you have zimmerman's friends, you have tracy martin, you have sabrina fulton, george zimmerman's mother, do you agree with jeff that ultimately, the jurors are just going to say, look, i don't know? >> first, the defense put on some tremendous witnesses to counter trayvon martin's mother at the opening of their case. but jeff is right. even if we look at this like a wash, we can't figure out who it is, then when the jurors don't know something, they're going to be inclined to acquit. however, let's just assume for argument's sake that it is trayvon martin's voice on that call, then we have to ask what theory of facts does that fit into? i can't say the prosecution articulated a narrative. what exactly happened? if he was screaming, was he being beaten up? did george zimmerman hold a gun in front of him? we don't know. the more we say we don't know, when that door closes in the jury room and they say we don't know, that tends to lead towards a walk, a not guilty. >> mark? >> look, the idea -- and i know that jurors get instructed on it, they're supposed to keep

. >> qbes sabrina fulton and tracy martin will spend the entire hour with reverend al sharpton.dnesday about 1200 people showed up at an orlando courthouse demanding justice for trayvon and protesting gun violence. that is one of the many aspects of this week's issue of time, after trayvon. in the guest spot today is time's washington bureau chief who co-wrote the cover story. michael, we talk about the protests this week and sort of the reaction to this verdict. i wonder, do you see this being channelled into any sort of specific legislation. do you think there's any sustained push for specific legislative responses in washington or the state legislative level? >> i think there will. whether it's successful in washington is a different question. a congressional black caucus said they'll push a number of bills. the issues we're talking about are stand your ground and repealing some of that. more laws to prevent profiling. more push on voting rights legislation and then the gun debate. i think where most of the action will happen that could be consequential is on the state level.

. >> so mark, would this just be a wash, if you have sabrina fulton on saying it's trayvon martin and robert zimmerman saying it's his son? >> i don't know. i think when you see the testimony when it was given by zimmerman's father, it's nowhere near as emotional and i know that the interview that you played was you on your daytime television show. maybe that's a little bit more dramatic. my guess is to some degree sunny is right when you have the mother who's there every day and she does carry herself extremely well and she is elegant, that's a perfect word for her, that will have an effect. and i think a lot of those mothers will understand that. whether that's going to be enough to overcome what has so far been a disaster for the prosecution, i just don't think it is. >> it's also interesting, danny, because trayvon martin's parents have been in the courtroom every single day. sometimes they've had to get up and go out when the testimony is too graphic. so, in a sense, the jury has sort of developed some sort of impression with them which they haven't done for george zimmerman's fa

but we do expect to hear from sabrina fulton on friday. it's widely believed she's going to be the last -- the last witness for the state. at that point, the prosecution will start to present its case. as you indicated, much of the day spent on dna evidence, anthony gorgone, dna expert for the state, major highlights from his testimony. for the most part, none of trayvon martin's dna found on the gun grip, none of zimmerman's dna found under his fingernails. the defense did spend time raising some questions about the number of varied ways that dna samples could be degraded. also, again, as you indicated, they started with a win for the state, the state had been arguing to get this evidence, to get this evidence in, that george zimmerman did know a little bit more than he let on about the law. also that he wanted to be a cop. we heard from someone from the prince william county sheriff's department in virginia who said that, you know, zimmerman applied several years ago to be a cop. that application was rejected because zimmerman had basica
