this is the safeway that is on fremont boulevard, not far from washington and osgood. he told me that at 1:45 p.m., he was in the back of the store and aman with an orange shirt came through the store and asked, how do i get out of here? the employee did not respond. the gunmen then started opening barrio stores inside of that safeway trying to get out. a short time later, fremont police came through the door and this is where that manhunt began. we don't know exactly what the suspect is responsible four, if anything, but we do know that right now, fremont police are on the search for a gunmen came into that busy safeway here, armed with the gun, and right now we are looking again at live pictures of sky fox of a large heavy police presence in the neighborhood. the employee told me that the gunman was wearing an orange shirt with light facial here. police came through that area and actually asked him, he went into the cooler and ducked for cover and was hiding there. police came through and asked him to come out of the cooler with his hands up, and then he ran out of t

both scenes are near the safeway store on the corner of fremont and washington boulevard. we have a live team coverage on this breaking news. a search is underway in the neighborhood for the gunman. >> henry, the good news if there is any is that the 2 officers are still alive. although unfortunately one is in critical condition. >> reporter: that is right. we got that confirmed. both officers were shot. it started about 1:30 during a traffic stop. the officer was when you're on the force. he tried to pull over a what turned out to be a stolen white pickup truck. sources tell me the driver then put the truck into reverse, shots were fired and an exchange between the suspect an officer, sources confirmed the officer was shot in the head. he was taken to the hospital. about 10 minutes later as officers converged in this area, on 5 corners a detective encountered the same suspect. there was a 2nd shooting. this 2nd detective who has tenures with the department was shot in the side. he is expected to survive.

he saw one of the shooters shoot an officer closest to safeway, okay? and ran into safeway. that's all i knee at this point. >> i see the police that he was pointing to the guy, and then i listened. the shots and the police fell down. he had like orange shirt with black and he have logo on his back. he had blood on his back. >> so he was shot maybe. >> yeah. he was shot i think. >> reporter: so at least one of the witnesses from the one you just heard says that she you saw blood on the back of one of the suspects and that she's assuming he was wounded. we have not heard about that from the authorities who held a news conference, but at least this witness says that she did see blood on the back of the suspect's t-shirt. again, we are at adams avenue near fremont boulevard. people here were told to shelter in place. now, witnesses tell us that at least one of the suspects ran into this neighborhood and that is why you see that contingent of police cars here. officers and agents who have launched a massive search in this area. back to you. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> vic, thank you
