you had this extraordinary encounter with saif gadhafi. tell me what happened. >> reporter: it was very strange indeed, piers. he was expected at a press conference earlier in the evening about, 11:30 in the night local time. we were told he was going to turn up and give us a little briefing, but he didn't turn up, he was a no-show so we all assumed this was just spin on the part of the gadhafi regime, that he really was in custody of the rebels. they insisted that he wasn't. a few hours later, 1:30 in the morning here local time, so a couple of hours ago. i was woken up out of my room, ran downstairs and everyone was pointing at this white armored land cruiser saying saif, he's in there, he's in there. so i walked up and knocked on the door, he was about to drive off. i knocked on the door. it opened up and i said saif, i need to see you with my own eyes. i leaned in and turned on the light on the ceiling on the back seat of this land cruiser and there he was. so i took a photograph of him. i asked him about where his father was. he said

saif said moammar gadhafi, his father, is still in tripoli. had not in fact taken over 90% of tripoli. always an interesting situation over there. we have reporters all over the place and here. we want to check in with pentagon correspondent chris lawrence and foreign affairs correspondent jill dougherty at the state department. jill, let me begin with you. you've been reporting that in the final -- even up to the final moments, moammar gadhafi was reaching out trying to buy time. tell us about these negotiations, if they even were -- if they even got to that point. >> well, it was people who were close to gadhafi. six people in fact who had been in contact with u.s. officials before and we are told by jeff feldman, the assistant secretary of state for near east affairs that all of a sudden there were these frantic calls coming from these six men. they were saying, look, we want to negotiate. we want to negotiate. and when it came down to it, u.s. officials said negotiate over what? they did not want to negotiate over moammar gadhafi leaving.

saif is the heir apparant to gadhafi. he's a very urbane character. educated in europe. he's got amazing contacts in the business world. and he's got this aura about him, because he travels in the west, he he's being groomed for the to be job. we were told initially by media reports and the international criminal court were negotiating with the rebels for his handover to answer crimes against humanity. that's why it was shocking 24 hours after he was meant to be lock and key he turns up at our hotel speaking to the media what did he said? he said, the first thing i asked, was where is your father? is he safe, well, where is muammar gadhafi is he in charge still? he said he's here with the rest of us. we only can assume that he means the gadhafi compound in tripoli that's where he took journalists and showed hundreds lining up to get weapons, ammunition to go back to their streets and fight this rebel advance. what does it mean for the conflict? it means that the national transitional council the rebel camp has lost a lot of credibility. they've been caught telling a lie.

what happened yesterday with saif gadhafi? does that change anything in terms of the politics of this or we still in a victory towards president obama? >> it seems to be a victory for president obama. it is a fluid situation. richard engel's reporting is that the rebel forces are at gadhafi's compound. that's probably not good news for gadhafi and his family. we talked about this in the past. these have been a tough last three or four weeks for president obama. finally some good news for him. once again it comes on the foreign policy front. >> fascinating. let's take a moment there. we were talking about this before we started up. this is a guy who, the biggest thing john mccain knocked him on is he doesn't have foreign policy experience. yet that's his strong suit. >> all of a sudden, he gets rid of osama bin laden, potentially moammar gadhafi, u.s. troops out of iraq, you start a pull down in afghanistan. as politico put it, the war time president may be a successful one. this is good news for him. a lot of bad news started
