so i'm going from place to place walking around saigon and everything with an empty m-16. one of the times that i did have, should we say, the fear of god put in me was when we were first with the ninth infantry, we went through a week of training and indoctrination, and they took us out on what they could an overnight march. and we made a camp around a rubber tree plantation. and a couple of shots were fired at us. i've got the, should we say, knowledge of what it tasted like to eat dirt, because that's how far i buried myself. well, one of the benefits of being a clerk, a personnel clerk was we could take care of our own guys. we'd get 'em like a seven-day drop which means you'd leave seven days early. so the army said, all right, we'll let 'em out early. so i got a two-day drop, and the day i got those orders it was like seeing our first son born. i mean, it was just fantastic. and i, obviously, sent copies home to everybody, and i just, you know, you start counting the hours, the days and everything. and you went to sheep at night -- to sleep at night knowing that, hop
