we have had 18 inches of rain in saint petersburg in tampa bay and thatis petersburg in tampa bay andtive. so catastrophic flooding potentially and even though the storm has now been crossing florida right the way eastwards, just to the south of orlando it has maintained category one status. it is massive and covers the whole state of florida and is bringing rain into georgia and carolina. we have seen major flooding with debbie and helene prior to that at the end of the summer. it will not be many more hours before it moves out into the atlantic. however, even once it moves out into the atlantic as a category one hurricane it has still got a lot of rain to give and it is still a hurricane, so there are still a hurricane, so there are still destructive winds around at the moment, causing devastation, and there is still the risk of further storm surges. it takes a long time for that water to recede and now we are going to get that storm surge on the east coast as well for several more hours. although it is moving quite quickly it is still packing a punch with the potential for more dev

and tonight a crane came crashing down into the street downtown saint petersburg. thankfully, no reports of anybody getting hurt after that. >> oh. violent tornado. violent, violent. just took out a semi-truck. >> well, that storm chaser got what they were looking for. they got so close to a tornado in fort pierce it looked like a miracle his car was not sucked into it. the tornado tore through the city, levelled homes. deputies say multiple people were killed in that. and search and rescue operations are underway to try and find anybody who could still be trapped in the rubble there. now, crews from the bay area have gotten there to take part in rescue efforts. some of the members of the california task force three and four are on the ground ready to help people who need it. andrea nakano reports on that. >> reporter: some of the task force members from the bay area have been there for weeks helping those in the southeast get through hurricane helene. more left earlier today, and they are ready to be deployed to help those impacted the most by milton. the mission

some of the accumulations five inches in saint petersburg in the six hour total was 13in.re doesn't matter if you have a storm surge, that much rain is going to put you under water in that short of time. but on top of that, you add 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 foot of storm surge, and there's definitely going to be problems. so again, a lot of electricity out. we've seen reports of a million people without power, 2 million people without power. and again this is going to go on for the next few hours as this system works its way. it's now a category one winds of 90 miles an hour. but the thing to note, and i thought about this earlier, i mentioned it in the earlier newscast. see the east northeast at 19. so it's this direction that's moving pretty quick. so normally these storms, if they slow down that one inch of rain in an hour, that five inches of rain in an hour turns into seven inches of rain in an hour. so the fact that this thing has some speed to it, that it's clipping through pretty quickly, very, very helpful. it's going to come out the back end. it looks like it wants to st

this is a look at what it was like in saint petersburg this afternoon. you can see the beach pretty much deserted, with only a handful of people still out and about. authorities warn people ahead of time to evacuate the tampa bay area to avoid the brunt of the storm. here's a look at tampa right now. it's just after 9:00 in the storm is slowly making its way farther inland. fox's rebecca castro is live in downtown tampa tonight. rebecca, what are conditions looking like right now? >> hey, betty, we are in the thick of it right now. we are seeing the worst conditions since milton has made landfall. we're undercover, so i'm going to step out of the frame so our photographer can show you a better look at downtown tampa right now. this is one of the areas that was under those mandatory evacuation orders. you can see we got the heavy rain. the wind gusts are coming. tampa ended up on the north side of the center of the storm. so that means we're going to dodge some of the worst storm surge. there will be surge, but it won't be as catastrophic as it will be fu
