for me, going back to iwo jima and saipan, i think iwo jima hit me the most. when you go there, there is nothing there. it is still the same thing it was back in world war ii, which was an airbase. there is no development. the japanese are still occupying it. that's one of the things that surprised me and that i really didn't know, that the united states gave the islands back to japan. you hear all the stories about it being one of the battles that will live on in american history, and you wonder why they they gave back an island that so many americans lost their lives on. i am glad you were a navajo code jima, and because of the things you did, you are able to help the marine corps take the island. if it wasn't for you guys, there would've been a lot more people who lost their lives. when i think about that and when i went to visit the island, it makes me realize what a significant contribution my father did for the united states. for me, you have always been my hero because you have always taken the time to teach me the things i needed to know. in order to g

in saipan the position was being overrun. and during the time that the patients were beginning to be evacuated, dr. solomon actually noticed japanese soldiers coming under the flaps of the tent. he won clubbing several, stabbing one with a bayonet and he shot one that we know of before ordering that the hospital be immediately evacuated. and then he went outside and disappeared. what he did was he took a position with a 30 caliber machine gun some distance toward the enemy that was coming at the hospital. in order to stop the attack or at least slow it down long enough for the patients to be evacuated. during the course of the night he was wounded three times. and we know that three times, his gun, the 30 caliber was dragged to a new position. he was found still manning the gun, unfortunately deceased in the morning. and 90 japanese soldiers were found in front of him. having been gunned down overnight as he defended the hospital site to evacuation. he was immediately put up for the medal of honor and it was just as immediate
