sal is right over there. sal. >> good morning, dave and claudine.out the drive into san francisco. one of the commutes that hasn't been lighter than usual. i can tell it will be this way for a bit because i can see the ramps coming in from 880 are still jam packed. when that begins to clear up, that's when you see traffic that is getting a little better. it hasn't reached that point yet. san francisco, northbound 101 traffic stop and go and slow and go from about the 280 interchange. southbound 101 does look okay if you're trying to get down to san bruno to the airport. and if you're on westbound 92 getting across the peninsula, it looks all right. but there is slow traffic on 101 from san mateo to burlingame. nothing unusual there. if you would rather use 280 that is a good route for you. on the peninsula, i told you about 101. northbound 280 is also slocuming in through san francisco. let's talk briefly about the silicon valley commute. it has filled in a little bit on the way up to cupertino and sunnyvale. it is just a touch lighter than usual. 7

let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. preparations underway for the first court appearance of the man suspected to be the golden state killer. >> ness a sacramento county jail right now. he will appear in court tomorrow. two murder charms have been filed against him for the deaths of man and a woman in rancho cordova back in 1978. but he could be responsible for as many as 12 murders and 51 rapes in ten california counties between 1974 and 1986, when many people thought the golden state killer had died. >>> now, here is a map showing where the crimes happened that deangelo is suspected of committing. the early crimes are in the sacramento area, with at least a dozen more in the east bay. mostly contra costa county. the last cases were in southern california, including ventura, orange, and santa barbara counties. ktvu's deborah says with so many crimes over so many counties, the prosecution will be complex. >> reporter: in june of 1976, i was 12. sacramento's d.a. grew up here and remembers fearing the east bay area rapist

sal, of course, keeping an eye on the roads but first let's go over to steve with a look at where the storm is headed right now. >> reporter: this is one of those general areas of thunderstorms, i think later today, when we get a little afternoon heating, that might be our best opportunity to get a possibility of severe weather in here. some of the parameters are right. 30s on a few of the temps. healdsburg 38 degrees, low 40s lima valley. napa 42, occidental in there, kelseyville 34, and already been some thunderstorm activity marin county to sonoma county. that's going to be in the mix all day today, especially when you get afternoon heating, you can see the lines forming and some of this could produce very low snow levels. morning and then afternoon heating so they will go up by tonight, they will start to come down again, there's a winter weather advisory out for the sierra. that goes until tonight. look at that rotating in, so this is something pretty impressive for us this time of year. rainfall will be generally maybe a couple 100th to maybe about an inch of rain. depends on yo

let's check in on traffic with sal. hey, sal. >> thanks, rosemary.y traffic is getting a little better. starting off with highway 24 westbound as you're driving to the tunnel from walnut creek. it doesn't look too badment it is a little slow here in lafayette and orinda. after that, it is a decent drive to the tunnel. if or driving to the bay bridge, it is still backed. we haven't seen any lightning in the 8:00 hour. hopefully it is just a matter of time. there was a hit and run crash at the toll plaza just before the toll plaza. it has been pulled to the side. it is not blocking any lanes. also look at 880 northbound. you can see traffic here is going to be crowded. southbound 880 slows in pockets from hayward to union city. that is a little better than normal. in the south bay, a mixed bag of commuting here on northbound 85. there was an accident near the alameda valley. >>> we're learning more how police captured the golden state killer. prosecutors are con first responderring that a relative's dna on a genealogy website led to his arrest. >> alex

here's mark. >>> good morning, sal.n drops later today, especially up in the north bay, and so far, the biggest change has been the cloud cover in san francisco, over the bay itself, and also patchy fog. there's a chance you will have drizzle or sprinkles out there, but the satellite is showing you this. there's the cloud cover over northern california, and the bulk of the green, organized rain fall up to the north, as you can see right now, and this will be sliding to the south, and especially after 4:00 or 5:00. current numbers, napa, 54. it will remain cooler today. stay bundled up there. if you're headed -- temperature up to 50, 59 degrees, and encroaching the entire area, bumping to the south, southwest to 20 miles an hour. -- throughout the day, the best chance of shower activity will be in the north bay. by 5:00, the rain band is quickly marching in from the north, and it will continue to move across the bay area, by about 5:00 and 8:00, and then, of course, the winds do pick up as well. 9:00, scattered rain show

let's bring in sal right now and, sal, this is the time i typically wake up in the morning and usually my cell phone, i see sometimes there's a big traffic alert out there. thankfully nothing is happening like that this morning? >> it's better than it was yesterday for sure but we already have some things that are getting crowded, mark, for example, right now at the bay bridge, it's pretty typical for it to be jammed up and we do have a little bit of a jam here at the macarthur maze and taking about 21 minutes, just over 20 minutes here to get from the carquinez bridge to the maze and you can tell the bridge traffic is getting busier loading up here, unless you're in the carpool lanes and the carpool lanes are doing very well but the rest of the commute is slow. you can also see 880 northbound, this commute usually doesn't get slow until a little later in the morning. so you still have a window of opportunity to get on the road before it gets very slow into downtown oakland. we do have westbound 580 at hacienda, another day of a crash, this one much less serious, it's in the center div

is coming up. >>> let's go to sal castendo for traffic. >> you are pretty good at this. you could have a second career if you want. more traffic is coming on the road. 24 minutes is still a decent time to drive between the carquinez bridge and the maccarthur maze. i am beginning to see slowing at the maze. you can see it right there. then you will see slow traffic. today is a day where a lot of people will be using the bridge during the middle of the day. there is a giants game at at&t park. the giants host the washington nationals again. it is a daytime game so that means there will be a lot of slow traffic in san francisco, especially in the at&t park area. the best way to get there in my opinion is public transportation. this is a look at san francisco, where highway 101 looks okay at the 80 split in both directions. we are back to the east bay. northbound add traffic is going to be a little bit crowded, but not stop and go as you pass the colosseum. westbound 92, the san mateo bridge looks all right. the south bay silicon valley commute is beginning to get filled in.
