so joining us today is sal khan, founder of khan academy to talk about the issue. sal, good to see you again. thanks for joining us. >> thanks for having me. >> you know, it's time. because i think we've been seeing a lot of of studies in the past few weeks about how student engagement is really falling off a cliff. oakland unified data shows about 20% of high school students are not showing up to class. over 30% of forest youth not logging in daily. engagement seems to be at a low. do you see that? >> yeah, you know, i think engagement has always been the key question even before covid and and any time of thing before education if you have the stunlts engage they will learn. we know when schools are in session physically there is also all sorts of intangibles there keeping them there, the friends, being able to talk and socialize. and just being physically present makes it more likely you will be mentally present. not always the case but makes it more likely. it's been a hard year where we've had the hard constraints put on us. >> true, engagement is always an issu

sal khan, founder and ceo of khan academy.oming up, we are going to hear from senator elizabeth warren. her push for a bill that would provide $5 billion for green mass transit. this is bloomberg. ♪ emily: the house and senate have introduced a proposal to shift u.s. transport away from fossil fuels. earlier, bloomberg caught up with elizabeth warren. >> i think we are going to be able to be able to work with a lot of republicans. right now, the white house is putting together its infrastructure package. it is all kinds of pieces. the part i have got here is about transportation. it is about buses, it is about subways, it is about commuter rail, it is about cars, electric cars. it is about all the ways we move people around. when we put together this big infrastructure bill, we will also include water and power grades. this ought to be our transportation piece. we do that piece, that is the part that currently creates about 30% of all carbon emission in the united states. this plan brings that down to zero and makes it possibl

with prospective and predict -- with perspective and predictions, we have sal khan, founder and ceo ofhan ac ademy. good to have you back here. you have warned about an education catastrophe as a result of this push into remote warning -- remote learning. has the catastrophe happened, or did we dodge it? >> we have dodge certain aspects of it. the data we do have that came out last fall, when some kids got some form of assessment, is that for certain groups, the learning loss is not been as significant. the day asterisk is there is about 10 -- 10% to 15% of the kids who do not show up for the assessment. everyone suspects they have suffered the most. i hold by the fact this will be disaster recovery. the very fact that even of the 85% we were able to measure we saw degradation by about 10% to 3 -- 1015% to 15%, and then that 10 to 15% has fallen off the raiment -- off the radar. emily: do you think the learning cap ultimately will close -- gap ultimately will close or will he get wider overtime? >> the hope is that it does not get wider overtime. there has been an interesting phenomeno

the non-profit khan academy has tried to bridge the gap between in person and online learning. sals who have missed out on up to a year's worth of school in person >> yeah. a few data points on what we know you know, we've had the latest test scores come out from the fall to measure learning loss. to some degree they weren't as bad as expected, especially in things like reading and writing. they were kind of roughly as bad as expected in math where we saw some learning loss but the big asterisk on that these were just for the students they were able to assess. there were 10, 15% of students who have fallen off the radar since covid began. those are obviously the students that you most worry about that probably would have likely pulled the averages down the data we're seeing has some things be to worry about and then on top of that we know that there's a good chunk of kids that we've lost. so as we go back there's going to be what i described as a disaster recovery to make sure that those kids don't fall further off track. >> you have been doing your part to try and help those kids
