where most are looking. i'm gathered after the summit in turkey, most people are looking to vienna, no breakthroughs are expected. the talks are crucial. the talks from the secretary of state, that he had in vienna on saturday, before coming here, are viewed as the main stage, if there's going to be a breakthrough. talks to resume on jan 1st in little more than a month's time. many are looking for a ceasefire. that is the main goal. some oppose that, the turks, the saudis and the qataris. the united states and others trying to get them on board. there are many groups within syria, that believe that they are making progress against the regime in the fight. they don't want a ceasefire, still a lot of things to iron out. trying to get all parties on board, and who will representatives the pictures of paris, this is the memorial. it is nearly 1:30 oox. you can see people coming to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in friday's attacks. most of the gunmen in the paris attacks are believed to be muslim. that sparked fears of a backlash within the community. al jazeera's mike viqueira joins us live from paris, i know you spoke with leaders from the muslim community, what are the primary concerns. in the wake of the attacks, the attack two days later at the supermarket. muslims in francaise that they have experienced a rising tide of intolerance, racism and attacks. that increase has been exponential. some of it has been personal. burning of mosques, graffiti on mosques, all things making some muslim here uneasy. in this country the government by law is not allowed to ask people what their religion is. there are no statistics on how many muslims live here. the best guess is 4.5 million, 7% of the population, consistently across the last 20 years, private polls show that the vast majority of the people describe themselves as only somewhat religious or not religious, what is clear is across the muslim community, whether they are devout, religious or secular, many here are increasingly afraid of rising intolerance. >> now, sheila, paris is your second home. are you sensing a shift in the tolerance level in the wake of these attacks? you know, multi sulturalism is a value that a the french holds deer. it's intention to french identity. there are challenges, the attacks on friday, earlier this year, they challenge that tolerance. france has serious issues that is has to deal with, most of the muslims in the country consider themselves not very religious, or only some what. france has the largest numbers of foreign fighters to join up with the islamic state group in syria. that is a problem. the interior minister said that he was going to crack down on what he called hate-preaching mosques. in a way that is it peculiar for the interior minister to have said. mosques in france are regulated by the state. the state has a role to play, in terms of what is preached, what is said. so the kind of mosques are key, those that are outside the system. and which are in a way, hidden away. those that meet in groups talk about in all radical ideas. there are big challenges in france. so one of the things i heard is the need for greater discussion and greater inclusion. and those discussions did not take place. >> sheila macvicar live in paris, we'll hear more from sheila in a report from john seigenthaler at the top of the book here in the area. let's get you over to ines rosales. you started with -- >> little spider. >> poor juliet. >> i got it from your stash. mike has a stash of bugs. here is what is going on this morning. 22 westbound, all lanes closed because of accident involving a downed poll. this is michigan avenue. lie, slow down through queens boulevard. heard about an accident on van kick. programs on -- van wyk. you can see the activity here off to the shoulder. all these cars involved in an accident. not sure what happened, why so many. you have a bit of a slowdown westbound. as far as the lincoln tunnel if you're driving into the city this morning, right now normal is 15 minutes inbound. if you want to take the holland, george washington bridge. ben and juliet. >> thank you very much. trump strum is defending his claim he -- donald trump is defending his claim he says he saw thousands of people in new jersey celebrating, applauding basically the september 11th attack. >> when the towers came down. he vividly remembers it. he saw it with his own eyes. there doesn't seem to be any evidence to back that up. fox 5's robert moses watching the story and talking about the controversy. people tweeted and said they saw things. i'm just guessing i'm not saying this is definitive, maybe in their minds after all these years there were some reports, little things here and there, but thousands may be overstating it. >> reporter: right. ben and juliet, it is important to note that we have seen images of people cheering overseas but we've never seen any such images closer to home. if past donald trump controversies are any indication this will not affect his standing in the race much at all. no proof of any such cheering has surfaced here but trump says, yes, it happened. and given the chance to backpedal he emphatically declined. >> i watched in jersey city, new jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down. thousands of people were cheering. >> reporter: donald trump's controversial comments on saturday at a rally in alabama became a hot topic quickly. even though there has been no evidence of any such cheering in jersey city, trump insisted on abc's "this week" that he did not misspeak. >> i saw it. it was on television. >> with your own eyes. please say where it happened. >> people were cheering on other side of new jersey where you have large arab populations they were cheering as world trade center came down. i know it may not be politically correct for you to talk about, but there were people cheering as that building came downs as those buildings came down. and, that tells you something. >> reporter: jersey city's mayor, steven phillip released a statement, that either, trump has quote memory issues or willfully distorts the truth. trump is plain wrong and sham fully politicizing a emotionally of charged issue he says. no one in jersey city cheered on september 11th. new jersey governor chris christie says he thinks he would remember such cheering if it happened. in addition to trump's comments, terrorism was another big topic on sunday shows. >> what happened in paris could happen here. there is no middle ground. >> reporter: marco rubio released his first tv ad which is spare and stark, in front of a black background he speaks about the recent attacks in paris. given those event the candidates have rushed to bill themselves as toughest against terrorism. ben carson has defended his some critics say is lack thereof. >> i hope everybody's on a learning curve. in medicine we have something called cme, continuing medical education. it recognizes the fact that things are always in the process of changing. >> reporter: another development in the race for president, a new "fox news poll" shows six republicans would beat hillary clinton head-to-head. marco rubio has biggest lead of eight points of the poll found that jeb bush, trump, carson, ted cruz and governor christie, who has struggled in the polls would all beat clinton. it was conducted right after the attacks in paris. ben and juliet, i thought that was somewhat surprising development given some of those candidates we mentioned have really struggled in the polls among republicans but this found they would beat hillary. >> what is interesting seeing ben carson on the downswing and marco rubio possibly taking some of his votes. so -- >> polls keep changing. see what happens next of the robert moses. >> has got a year. thanks, robert, very much. >> a little less than a year. about 350 days. developing story of course in hoboken. >> yep. fox 5's jim myth in fox 5 hd. can you see water there? is that still a problem. >> reporter: that is still a problem. not only many streets in the area still flooded but there is still water coming out of the ground. we're over intersection of newark and harrison streets. you can see the water still coming out with a good amount of force. it will take time before crews get the water completely shut down. of course we have many streets in the area that are still closed due to flooding. not other thanly this intersection, newark an harris street, jackson, patterson, over to observer highway. if you're traveling in towards the south end of hoboken you find many of these streets currently shut down. it will affect people coming in from the southern areas, jersey city, trying to get into this area over to the path station or station. if you are entering hoboken you're advised to enter it from the north end. many of these streets are closed on the south end of town. and with water still coming out of the ground with such force it will take quite some time to get ben, juliet. back to you. >> really no way to avoid having to go to the north part of the city. that is the lincoln tunnel up there. you will have that traffic. yay, that will be pretty messy thanks, jim. >> jim smith. still to come, yukon student, salah abdeslam is not, not among the persons arrested during these searches. >> police believed that when he escaped after the paris attacks. 26-year-old salah abdeslam may have still been wearing a explosive vest. while he remains on the run, the maximum level alert will remain in effect. one belgian bank has told employees to work from home. intelligence chiefs and the prime minister will meet again later on monday, until then, the city can only watch and wait. paul bre brennan, al jazeera, brussels. >> neave barker is there for us. what more do we know? >> that's right, well, the prime minister john michel who is expected to give a news conference any moment now, in which we should have a clear idea whether or not the highest level of security risk or threat level is likely to be sustained for any longer than it already has been in place. this is now third day here in brussels where threat level is been at level number 4. there's a level number 3 nationwide. that basically means that here in the capital, there is a security threat, the security threat rather is viewed as being imminent nationwide, is viewed as being probable. in the last 24 hours we've seen really a flurry of activity from personnel not only in brussels but two other towns cities in the country also. raids here in brussels have focused on the notorious mollenbeck district as being the sight of raids over the last ten days. described by if belgian media as an incubator of jihaddism. further raids of town of leige, and in charleois, $25,000 were seized by officials there. we don't believe that any weapons were found but a very busy 24 hours for officials across the country. we also believe that 21 people were taken into custody, and have just learned in the last few minutes, from the belgian proprosecutors that 17 of the 21 have now been released, that three remain in custody for questioning and that at least one of those people arrested has been charged with belonging to a banned terrorist organization and of actually taking part in some kind of terrorist activity. we don't know much more about that as it currently stands, more on that of course when we have it. as for brussels, itself, a city on high alert, as we heard there from paul's report, the metro remains closed. schools and universities are closed, too. it's of course as people try to go back to work on a monday morning they find a scene that is very much different to the average working week. there's a very strong police and military presence on the street. it does beg the question how sustainable will this be? how can people continue living their lives as normally as they can? of course that adds a new security risk that the city currently faces. >> the prime minister has said that the brussels alert status remains at the highest level. in the meantime, new concerns that raises the ability to find salah abdeslam quickly. >> of course the clear message from the belgian government is that while intelligence suggests that, there remains a thread in brussels and nationwide, while salah abdeslam remains on the run, it is absolutely vital for national security for those levels to remain at the maximum possible in brussels. there has been some new information about abdeslam's arrival here in brussels. some suggestion from people who actually know him, that he may have arrived here, actually bringing weapons with him, possibly a suicide vest, although that has yet to be confirmed. but as i said there is intelligence, there is a real concerted effort by the authorities behind the scenes now to really close the net on perhaps one of the most wanted men in europe at the moment. >> neave barker reporting live there from brussels, thank you very much indeed. as the prime minister confirms the highest level of threat is being retaped. >>> two palestinian girls use scissors to attack a palestinian

salah abdeslam? >> absolutely, don, the latest we have is the search for salah abdeslam has been expanded to france and belgium and the netherlands. the netherlands says that it is a global manhunt. and abdeslam in the past has spent time in the netherlands. and one of the things we have to keep in mind is that this is the guy in the cell who rented some of the cars. one of the cars that was rented was found in a paris neighborhood here very close to where the ring leader then was later killed. this is certainly someone who knows how to get around europe and certainly this participate of europe in particular. >> do we know when he was last seen? >> yeah, i mean, that is one of the things that puzzles many people in this investigation. the last time is when he was checked by the police after the attack. he was taken into custody, questioned and, then, don, he was released. that is one of the big failures that people are talking about. at that point in time, the authorities did not keep him in custody. the cops didn't feel a reason to keep him in custody. he was last seen on a highway outside of paris. but knowing that area a little bit, the highways branch off into the netherlands and into germany, once you are past the greater paris areas you can go in a lot of directions. >> there is concern that he may have a suicide vest with him? >> yeah, sure. there is a big concern. everywhere that so far the authorities have encountered the terra terrorists involved in the attack had suicide vests and the cousin of the ring leader who blew herself up when the authorities came over to raid their apartment in a neighborhood to the northeast of paris. so certainly it appears as though these people have a lot of access to explosives. and explosive vests is one of their main tools of choice. there is a concern he might be armed. you might be talking about rifles. but you also might be talking about suicide vests as well. >> what did the french prime minister say when he addressed the parliament? >> well, i mean, he said that he wanted additional powers. he said that he wanted the -- france and other countries to get tougher on combatting isis but he also warned that there is still of course a very big threat of terrorism for france, but for other european countries as well. one of the things the french have been saying is they need a pan-european effort to combat terrorists and isis and making sure that these people don't get into this country. they believe that some went through the migrant route through the balkan states and turkey as well. this is what the french are saying we need to crack down on this and get tougher on terrorism. but they strike a very defiant tone and they say they are going to fight this out in the end and they vow to destroy isis. >> nbc news spoke with the lead of the commando raid on friday night. >> we discover like -- more than maybe 7,000, 8,000 people -- >> 700, 800? >> yeah. laying on the floor, tons of blood everywhere. no sound, no one was screaming. >> the details that are emerging are horrifying. >> yeah, they certainly are, don. i was able to speak to some of the people that survived the bataclan raid. one of the things they keep talking about is that awful sense of vulnerability and they had nowhere to go, nowhere to run. if the attackers find them they will kill them immediately. and no one can save them. i spoke to people who hid in a room and tried to breathe as little as possible. they talked about people shivering. and you have that police officer there talking about people who were on the ground and not moving, obviously trying to play dead and not make the attackers recognize them. it really was an awful scene and that is something that many people that have described what wept on in that bat clan theater which was the raid that went on if quite a while. where they shot the place up and executed people and rounded people up. and when the raid happened they blew themselves up. it must have been a traumatizing event for those who survived and for those who lost loved ones in that. and it's a traumatizing event for this nation as a whole and certainly explains why there has been such a strong response from the french as far as law enforcement is concerned in this country. but also as far as their military response and bombing targets in syria as well. >> fred pleitgen thank you very much. we are learning more about the incident that happened on friday and more about the raid that killed the leader of the attacks, abdelhamid abaaoud. cnn's nic robertson has more on how it all went down. >> reporter: 4:20 a.m. on wednesday. an elite french police unit closes in on an apartment building in the paris superb of saint-denis. wiretaps have led them to this neighborhood. their target, abdelhamid abaaoud, the suspect ring leader in a string of terror plots. police make their way to the third floor but an explosive charge fails to open the security door. a ferocious gun battle erupts and continues for an hour. three people are quickly arrested. but there are now still two or three people inside, including a woman. they throw grenades. police fire 5,000 rounds into the apartment. after the scene quiets down, police send in an attack dog named diesel to check for signs of life. diesel is shot dead. a police sniper shoots one of the terrorists inside. injured he continues to fire back. a police officer shouts to the woman, where is your boyfriend? she yells back, it's not my boyfriend. then a loud explosion. police say the woman detonated a suicide vest. it turns out she is the cousin of abaaoud. but it's several more hours before police can enter the building where they find a scene of carnage. two men are detained but there are the remains of two of three bodies inside. detectives race to discover whether abaaoud is one of them. but they have to move slowly. more than 24 hours pass before the prosecutor's office in a two-line statement say the bullet-ridden body is abaaoud's. >> among the six attacks that have been avoided or foiled since spring of this year, abaaoud seems to have been involved in four of them. >> reporter: a victory against terrorism but many questions remain. >> the french had no idea that abaaoud was back in europe. had slipped across the borders undetected. it was a tip from moroccan intelligence that led the french to belief that abaaoud had left syria and was back to begin a campaign of terror. the question for france now and for all on the continent, are there more like abaaoud who slipped undetected into europe? nic robertson, cnn, paris. >> thanks for that. >>> when we come back, air strikes on isis in syria, are they working? how much do we know about the terrorist stronghold? >>> new isis threats just as the holiday travel season is about to begin. how serious should americans take all of this? [ gunfire ] >> reporter: out front, this exclusive video of the raid. police unloaded 5,000 rounds and explosives on their targets. in the rubble, a bullet riddled body. investigators using fingerprints from the fingers, palms and soles of the feet identify him. he was known to french intelligence as a militant. in one video, he says he enjoyed spilling the blood of infidels. he is seen driving a truck, trailing behind it a string of dead bodies. also killed in the assault, his female cousin. hasna al. she blew herself up in an exchange with the police. two crucial clues led the police to zero in. phone indicates his cousin was inside and moroccan intelligence alerting them two days before the raid that he was in france, not syria, as many believed. he grew up in belgium, in the poor, immigrant neighborhood. known to have links to terror plots. after a string of petty crimes, he appears to have been radicalized even taking his 13-year-old brother with him to syria. among his friends, he blew himself up in the paris attacks. one is still on the run. the suspect of an international manhunt. now he is dead, the police will get more information to go on. perhaps cell phones begin to backtrack where he was and what he was doing in the days before the attack last friday. the concern, of course, is, he came back to france undetected. we heard from the french officials saying he is connected with other known jihadists here. how many more, like him, snuck back, are under the radar and authorities here don't know. how lucky were they to get the tip off two or three days ago from moroccan authorities. >> thank you, nic. the attorney representing the family. natalie, you were the one that told his father that his son was dead. was his father sad that his son died in this raid or was he glad? >> he was not sad. he was not glad. i don't know the name in english, i'm sorry, my english is not perfect. in french, i think that we could say that he was -- >> relieved? he was relieved? >> yes. he was relieved because he knew already in the last month that his son was linked to all the terrorism act, which happen in europe. he was afraid. his son had maybe committed something horrible. >> it's been reported he was very involved with his parent's business in brussels. he was presiding over board meetings in 2013. when did his father learn or think, notice for the first time that his son was becoming radicalized? >> it was during 2013. his son was beginning to make a lot of critics, concerning the way the father was educating the small kids because he was educating them, you know, like european. abdelhamid was upset about that. >> he said horrible things. one of the things he said, i quote him from a video, it gives me pleasure from time-to-time to see blood of the disbelievers run. he put out another video. you can see him dragging a pile of bodies behind a truck in syria. what did his father say to you when he saw this video, when he heard these horrible things? >> he said -- he said exactly that this was the behavior of a psycho path. for him, it was the proof that his son became a devil. >> does the father think he's responsible for that in any way? does the family look back and say was there something they did that enabled abellhamid to become this devil? >> i will tell you sincerely what i think. the father, i'm sure, is feeling guilty. >> natalie, you are representing the brother. of course he is on the run. they say, the police say he was a part of the attacks in paris on friday. has he tried to contact his brother, tried to reach out to him for help in any way? >> no. no. and i had to contact this evening. she wants first to know if maybe salah is among the people who have not identified right now in paris. he's waiting to see if salah is alive or on the run. so, he asked me today, to tell salah that if he was still alive that abaaoud was dead. he doesn't need to be afraid of him and he must go to the belgium authorities. it's maybe the only way to avoid that he could be arrested and shot down by the police during this arrest. >> natalie, i don't know if you have seen video, cctv video from inside one of the restaurants. it's horrible to watch, but it's video of the actual shooting. you see a shooter shooting into the restaurant, killing people. the daily mail newspaper identifies the shooter as salah. has mohammed seen that? what does he think about the possibility that salah murdered people? >> i don't know about that video. mohamed was not telling me about the video. it was already shown by the belgium authorities on tv. >> what do you think his reaction will be, if he can identify that it's his brother? >> he will be hor
