emily: salesforce has been a big acquirer.o you continue to buy companies without losing focus, without getting bloated? marc: well, number one, acquisitions are hard no matter who you are. i can tell you firsthand, after doing 25 acquisitions over the last five years, acquisitions are hard. but you can transform your company through acquisitions. and the other thing that acquisitions do is they bring all these incredible people into your company, and if you can nurture those people, well then, you can end up phenomenal results. emily: so what do you do from within to overcome the hard part, and the challenges when you buy another big company? marc: the number one thing you've got to do is you've got to be, as a ceo, you have to choose which one you are going to be in. because it's going to dramatically increase the success of it. i only have so much time. [laughter] emily: right. marc: so where i spend my time is super important. i kind of divide my time into four quadrants. and in a certain quadrant, which is my transformati

who's big and bold enough to buy salesforce and would benioff s ell? if it happens it would be the largest takeover in technology history. they say that salesforce has hired bankers to advise on offers after the company was approached by a potential acquirer who has not been identified by the list of companies that can afford to buy a company with a $48 billion market cap is small. oracle microsoft, ibm come to mind. but who would want it? would enbenioff sell it again. the company is not profitable. joining me is cory johnson who broke the story and the ubs managing director. i have been thinking about this and i'm skeptical. cory, you first. you helped break the store. cory: we know what we know, wish that there is an offer on the table and i hired bankers. -- they hired bankers. benioff has a bunch of options vested right about now. the board has to make a decision and evaluate the offer on the table. that is why the engage these outside experts to look at the offer. but it is an interesting business. it is a business that shows tremendous topline g

salesforce has been the gold standard here. this would make a lot of logical sense strategically, financially, especially in terms of where oracle needs to play on the cloud. they've been late to the game and with salesforce, that would be them making the big bet on cloud. it's always been talked about, oracle and salesforce and even though we couldibm, this is the combination. it would be cheered by the street and take oracle into a different sphere in terms of the cloud. >> this would truly be transformative. this would be, in fact, if a deal goes through, oracle's biggest acquisition to date. it looks like the last-biggest one was peoplesoft in 2005 for about $10 billion or so. dan, what's the balance sheet look like? i noticed that just i think last week oracle did a $10 billion bond deal. >> interesting timing. the $10 billion bond deal, i have this capacity, $45 billion in cash, $40 billion in debt. but they generate about $15 billion a year in cash flow so they definitely have capacity to do a deal like this and like you

alix: does salesforce even want to sell itself?i: what we understand as they have been approached. they would have to hire bankers. there are a lot of buyers out there. in these days of effectively zero interest rates, anything is possible in the magic of credit. salesforce only has their plans to run themselves as an individual company. but it has not been a business that generates a lot of free cash flow. before that, they needed negative free cash flow as a result of doing so may acquisitions to do that business. they have expensive plans to build offices here in san francisco. that doesn't mean that someone else does not see this as a likely acquisition. consistent sales of shares of salesforce, that is not an indication that he knows what everyone else wants to do with his company. alix: alex, you mentioned some potential acquirers, those big enough to do that. what kind of regulatory concerns might there be in tying up this huge behemoth like salesforce? alex: it is a legitimate question. i'm sure before they agreed to anythi

salesforce shares surged on the news. joining us from new york is on a rocket grotta -- anarog grenda. guest: this is a massive company with close to a $50 million market cap. any company would have a hard time in terms of how the market is going to shape up. it behaves very differently from how a microsoft or an oracle would behave, from a financial point of view. cory johnson: he surely, one of the things that is attractive is the sales growth. when you look at sales numbers for salesforce you see that revenue goes up and up and up. guest: absolutely. they have been going north for a very long time. they have forced traditional legacy software companies to change their model of how they sell software, so they are the big gorilla in the space. sales growth has been much higher than any other company. cory: the thing that disturbs me about their results -- they don't care about profit. but from a free cash flow standpoint, this is a business that after acquisitions is just you know, spending all their free cash flow on ac

it is interesting, because salesforce is a fascinating company.antastic topline growth and nothing for profit. forecast last year was nothing compared to the previous years. no free castle after acquisition. you wonder what anyone would see in such a business where maybe the future's so bright you've got to wear shades -- stephanie: did you just say that? cory: sun is coming up here. it's early. clearly, customers like what ails force is selling particularly because they sell it for less than what it costs to make it. -- what salesforce is selling, particularly because they thought for less than what it cost to make it. but companies like oracle and sap, they are really focused more on the cloud and less in the traditional software commitments. but do they want to grow in the direction where there are no profits, which is what salesforce is doing by spending boatloads in marketing to boost the topline? their spending billions and acquisitions to boost the topline. somebody out there is looking at this thing. we want to be bigger by doing what sale
