there's a picture of sally, sally ride 1951 to 2012.g behind her is her mom and her mom jeans. the girl is talking to her mom and what she is saying, this is the caption. when she is saying his way, are you saying there was a time when there weren't any women astronauts? yes indeed. this is really what sally story is about and this is why she is so important. sally as i said in the video did not grow up with astronaut dreams. she wanted to be a scientist and thought she would be a tennis player and when that didn't work it was right back to science. she was totally committed. to being a scientist, was quite sure she would be an academic all of her life and do research. one day she went to stanford, she got her undergraduate, her masters and her ph.d. at stanford in physics and astrophysics and the 19, january of 1977 she is finishing her last year of her ph.d. thesis and she goes to the stanford student union and get a cup of coffee and a doughnut to wake up before she goes to class. she sits down and she picks up a copy of the stanford

sally had a wonderful time. she worked very hard. one of the things she did this with all astronauts do when things got a little slow which was rare. she would drift over to the window and looked back at the earth and the image that she saw of the earth with the earth's atmosphere totally changed her life. she said it was as if someone had taken a world blue crayon and drawn a line around the earth earth. sometimes she change the metaphor. she would say that line is as thin as the fuzz on a tennis ball or she would say it was the earth's space suit. that's our atmosphere. that's only thing that is protecting us from the harsh reality of outer space. without the atmosphere amount of us would be here. we could not survive. that's when she began to understand the fragility of the planet we live on and directed a huge amount of her life towards getting science and government and children interested in doing something about protecting the earth. that was just the beginning of sally's contributions to the planet and to nasa. after the chal

this is the sally fort where the troops coming out. you can see over into the fort where the guns are mounted. so that's really one of my favorite photographs. so this is very helpful for a start. fort ward is a good place to actually start our tour of the civil war defenses of washington. before we go out and actually look at fort ward, i want to point out this is an 1864 plan of the fort. the part that has been restored here is the northwest corn cher is right here. and you'll see that. the rest of the fort is not as distinct when you walk through it. but the northwest section is. this is a model of the fort as it might have looked. notice around it is the outside of the ditch. and then the fort itself and this is the northwest bastian here. and the fort, itself, and this is the northwest bastion here. this is the gate, or sally port, to ft. ward. it was on the rear wall of the fort. it's been redone a number of times. the army down at ft. belvoir, especially when the engineers were there, helped redo this gate a number of times. but
