. >> carl, i was just on a conference call with sally jewel the interior ski announcing at the conclusionear process that involved public comment the final rule on fracking regulations on public and indian land. now this is a fraction of all the fracking operations in the country. the vast majority is on privately owned land. but these new standards would require drillers to disclose the chemicals they were using to set new standards for the types of fluids that are using and it's all designed to protect the surrounding environment where fracking takes place. it is not expected to have a major financial impact on industry. some estimates have had the impact at about 20 million with an "m," $20 million, of impact on companies. so it's not revolutionizing practices given advances in technology. and sally jewel referred at the -- during this call that states need to now take up the practice of regulating fracking operations on their own privately held lands. that's not what the administration is doing today, though. >> john harwood in washington, thank you very much for that. >> when we come

i do appreciate your comments on sally jewell. also think she was a great appointment and doing a great job. i split my time between arizona and alaska and i live close to the arizona border and am active in several border issues and volunteer in mexico. what is going on in dhs is of particular interest to me. i have a question for you. from 2008-2012, dhs was allowed to then $500 per square foot building homes. about 10 times more than the average home has benchen selling floor in the last 10 years. prices fell, and even today, you can still buy homes for well under $190,000 any day of the week. now, i understand, they have money for 36 more such townhomes. in addition, they spent about 10 times too much on some trailers that they are parking at an rv court. those have been vacant the whole time. he said it was so urgent that we needed, they bypass all public hearings and bidding, and went in bought them and put them in. they did not go around and ask other rv courts how much it would cost. also, since they are vacant, they have

during a recent house natural resources committee hearing interior secretary sally jewell confirmed that she wants public input and local input in antiquities act designations. so why would anyone oppose elevating state and local input on these designations? despite the claims made by the senator from nevada, my amendment will not repeal the antiquities act. it's not going to gut the law. it will not repeal existing protections on our national parks and national monuments. it will not prevent future designations from being made. my amendment simply ensures that local residents and the states have a meaningful voice in determining monument designations. in 2010, former interior secretary salazar stated during a senate hearing that the administration would have a conversation and dialogue with people locally and across the country before any monument designations occurred. my amendment simply holds this and future administrations accountable to what they said they would do. and it protects the voice of the people in decisions like this. you know, protecting the voice of the people should n

sally in 1981 when abc asked me to then join our terrific team to cover the upcoming space shuttle program. as i mentioned the anchor was frank reynolds. our science correspondent was a terrific guy jewels bergman who practically invented field. they want ad third person to the team for variety of reasons. i'm describing myself as the color guy in the baseball booth. i was there to do feature stories. because of number of things i wound up becoming lead reporter and anchoring all space shuttle missions and landings through the challenger explosion. it was really fun. my first assignment when i ght to the johnson space center in houston, was to, this is april of 1981. the first shuttle was about to launch. excuse me i went to? january of 1981 to prepare for the first launch in april. my story was do a story on first breed of astronauts women minorities, people who were not jetfighter pilots of old. we asked nasa a group of individuals who were representative, sally was one of the new bees that nasa offered up. i loved her at first because she spoke english not tech know talk and her direct manner an determination. i asked her why do you want to go intointo space? i expect ad cocky respon
