sally nabil, bbc news, cairo.media is reporting that he country's leader has received a letter from russian president vladimir putin seeking to establish closer ties between the two countries. scott snyder who's a senior fellow for korea studies at the council on foreign relations said president putin could be seeking to use north korean labour in areas of ukraine that russian forces have seized. i think it represents a possible convergence of interests between russia and north korea. last week, the russian ambassador to north korea suggested that north korean overseas labour could be useful in doing reconstruction work in the breakaway provinces in the ukraine, and north korea had earlier made a point of recognising these breakaway provinces. and so, what it looks like is the possibility that there could be some kind of some kind of support by north korea in the form of labour in these areas, probably in return for substantial cash contributions to the flailing north korean economy. scott snyder, from the council

sally nabil, bbc news, cairo.e on the west coast main line today, after the train operator, avanti, said services had to be cut because of "severe staff shortages". avanti runs long distance services between london, glasgow and edinburgh, also serving birmingham, liverpool and manchester. our correspondent phillip norton is at manchester piccadilly station now. this is a case of a timetable being wrapped up by one of the country's main railway operators. avanti had to cancel almost 300 services in a week because of staff shortages. that's why it's brought in these changes. it has suspended many advance ticket sales from today until september 11, until the new timetable is finalised. in order to have a more reliable service it says it has had to cut frequency, so some services that were three trains per hour, are now hourly. it says the new timetable will be in place until further notice. there's been finger pointing. avanti has said it is because of staff sickness but also because of staff sickness but also becaus
