salma abdelaziz is following this for us from london.hat more can you tell us about the growing outrage and the crackdown against the protestors? >> reporter: a mahsa amini has become a symbol of defiance for those taking the streets and have done so now for over a week. the demonstrations going late into the night yesterday. social media video of course that we cannot independently verify showing people taking to the streets, using chants like women, freedom, life. again, they are facing a brutal crackdown by security forces, monitoring groups saying live rounds have been fired into crowds. and you mentioned the number of people killed, these estimates vary, but monitoring groups say dozens of people already killed in this brutal suppression of dissent by the iranian state. and what is very concerning, highly concerning here, is there are ominous warnings that this crackdown will intensify. that iranian authorities are preparing for yet another uptick in violence. and we've heard from the military recently, the army saying it is willing

cnn's salma abdelaziz is following this for us from london and joins us now live. hat can you tell us about the growing outrage and the crackdown against the protesters? >> reporter: demonstrations continued again late into the night yesterday, kim, and along with that, of course, that brutal suppression of dissent that we've seen from iranian authorities. it's really hard to overemphasize just how brave, how courageous these acts of defiance against the iranian state are. i know we have one clip to show you. i just really wanted to give you an example of what these women are doing. it's a social media video. we cannot independently verify it but you can see in that clip a woman standing atop a curb. she's shouting down at these morality policewomen, refusing to put on her head scarf, and they react. they try to grab her. she yells, i am do this for mahsa amini. scenes like this are being repeated across the country. dozens of iranian cities have had protests and security forces have responded with brute force. rights groups saying live fire has been used on the gro

cnn's salma abdelaziz joins us live. about the growing outrage and crackdown among the protesters. >> reporter: it's really become a symbol of defiance, something much bigger than a horrifying case of a 22-year-old woman who died in police custody after being arrested by the morality police. this is becoming a much bigger, a much wider form of protests that we're seeing across dozens of cities against the government, against the morality police, demanding it and calling women, freedom, life, using those chants in the streets. those protesters, those demons demonstrators are being met with brute force. they said fires are being used on crowds of people. there's social media video that we can't verify, it shows people bleeding and women carrying out incredible acts of bravery. burning their hijabs. standing up to police officers. refusing to put on the head scarf. but there are concerns that this crackdown that's already been going on for days now that's included an internet blockout, that's included execute forces taking

salm salma abdelaziz joins us from london.t might be surprising considering how repressive the regime is. what's the latest? >> reporter: what's important to note is you begin to understand how threatened the iranian government is by the scope and scale of these demonstrations by looking at its reaction. take that internet blackout, millions of iranians have had no access to the internet for days. the united states accusing iran of being afraid of its own people. you can understand why this is so worrying. first of all, the international community struggles to track what's actually happening on the ground, we know dozens of people have been killed but it's extremely difficult to get a sense of the death toll, to get a sense of the extent and the brutality of this track doun. we also know that hundreds of people have been arrested, but, again, it's very difficult to ascertain information and it means for those protesters on the ground there's a sense of isolation, a sense of fear, it is difficult to coordinate, it is difficult

cnn's salma abdelaziz joins us from london.ts, how widespread might be surprising given how repressive the regime is. >> reporter: i think that internet blackout is telling of how threatened the authorities are by these demonstration. on friday 40 cities across iraq rocked by unrest. these are extraordinary acts of courage. i want to show you one example, a leaked social media video that we cannot independently verify that shows protesters in the hometown of the supreme leader and they are burning a statue, a statue that is symbolic of the 1979 islamic revolution. it it is scenes like this that are being met with absolutely brute force. an nesty international saying live fire is being deliberately fired into crowds of protesters. you've mentioned hundreds of people arrested, including journalists. dozens more killed -- dozens, rather, killed as well. we can't independently verify this death toll but that is part of why this internet blackout is so concerning. it means it is difficult for the international community, for monitor

salma abdelaziz, thanks so much. joining us now to discuss, ambassador richard haas, the counsel of foreign relations, former official in the state department. ambassador, good to have you on again. >> good morning. >> first, if we could talk about your reaction to these expected sham referendums in russian-occupied territory, which frankly territories of ukraine that are only partially occupied by russian forces, contested to a large part. the concern is russia will now claim these territories as russiantory. is it your concern that russia will then use that as justification for escalation? in other words, treat ukrainian attacks on that territory as an attack on russia itself? >> well, again, it's not as though the russians need new justifications for carrying out this totally unprovoked war of choice on their part. these are, as you say, sham political events. to me, it's more a sign of weakness. this is a response that they're doing poorly, militarily. ukraine will ignore these referendum quite properly. and russ
