the great salt lake is one of the mate -- one of the things that makes utah in salt lake city very special place. we are looking at the great salt lake across the city of on and. remains itself living of a prehistoric lake. it reached its maximum level about 16,000 years ago and then it began to receive after an ice dam at the north end of the lake collapsed. this is essentially a very shallow pan. what i mean is that the depth of the lake is never very great. if you want to look over this way, look out of the west, actually. dome is carrington island. the deepest part is between us and that point. levels, medium-low lake probably around 30 feet or less, the lake itself averages only 15 or 16 feet in depth and looking a little bit down into the left over here, you can see the effect of that. that is a very minimal change in lake levels. surface area and therefore the shoreline of great salt lake can change very radically and very quickly. the first inhabitants were native people. native peoples lived here as long ago at least 10,000 years. anyone resource for living around great salt lake

brigham young died in the lion house of salt lake city. in 1877. he had been declining a number of years. he suffered from rheumatism, at one point he had to have all of his teeth pulled and he had dentures. his final illness, some people -- some kind of intestinal thing, some people thought it was a appendicitis but it was not sure what actually took his life. he is a very interesting character. he left strict instructions about his funeral. he wanted his coffin to be a certain size, so many inches taller than he was and so many inches to the side. he wanted to turn over if he wanted. he wanted a pillow under his head. he gave strict instructions, no black. he did not want his wives or children to wear black. he was going home to his heavenly home. there was a grand funeral held in the salt lake taber knack kill and his body was carried up the street to the small cemetery on his own estate where he lies buried still today. brigham young remains one of the most influential people in american history because of his vision on what could be built here

the salt lake city case we did in fact find that salt lake city had a market increase in. the employment during two thousand and two that employment dissipated after a year and we found that in fact the olympics created about seventy thousand jobs and that's great fortunately the winter olympic committee in salt lake city had predicted it was going to produce thirty five thousand new jobs so what we found was a positive effect of the olympics but about one fifth of what the organizers claimed and we see that's an interesting number i said at the top of the show these guys are talking three hundred eighty thousand jobs associated with the world cup so if you're using those numbers that ratio what do you think i mean so i agree and disagree with with what he was saying mainly because. i do think that it's a tremendous strain because examples abound about any country that's hosting a major sporting event usually is going to spend a lot more money that they expect in the case of brazil to an eleven billion dollars an astonishing amount and it almost doesn't where i disagree is

that's why it was big news this spring in april when at the brand new federal courthouse in salt lake cityah, federal marshal shot and killed somebody inside the courtroom. the guy was actually the defendant in a gang-related case. that ended up being interesting enough. it turns out there are tongan crips. one of the defendants in the tongan crips gang-related case was listening to a witness testify. in the middle, he reportedly grabbed a pen on a table in the courtroom and ran across the courtroom with a pen and was apparently going to try to stab the witness with a pen in the courtroom. u.s. marshal in the courtroom pulled out a gun, shot and killed the defendant while he still held the pen and shot him in the courtroom. i don't know if that had happened any time between the indian nationalists in san francisco in 1918 and the tongan crips in salt lake city. that's a very rare occurrence. in federal courthouses and their grounds, they do see their share of american gun violence. a guy shot up the lobby in the las vegas federal courthouse in 2010 and killed a security guard. last year in

just in the past few weeks, i went to salt lake city with a mayor and the utilities are teaming up on building efficiency. i went to st. paul where there was a science center that is recycling energy waste, saving money and it's actually teaching kids what we adults are just beginning to learn. i've seen fortune 500 companies revamp strategies by meeting the demands of a carbon constrained future. i want to give a shot out to all of the local officials, all of the rural co-ops, all of the public power operators and investor owned utilities that have been leading the charge on climate change. you know who you are. i thank you. it's clear that you act not just because it's reasonable but because it's the right thing to do for the people that you serve. governors and mayors of all stripes are leaning into climate action. they see it not as a partisan obstacle but as a powerful opportunity. we know that success breeds success. those of us who works in states and local governments have seen healthy competition. push states to share ideas and expertise. that is how everybody ends up winning
