sam smith conquers the grammys. big wins on music's biggest night. we will break down the surprising moments all ahead. >>> good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. 5:00 a.m. in the east. christine romans is off this morning. up first, angela merkel meets face-to-face with president obama this morning. the chancellor wants sanctions against russia in they do not agree to end the fighting by wednesday. president obama is facing pressure to arm ukraine. something the chancellor opposes. we have frederik pleitgen with more from kiev. >> reporter: good morning, john. it is the difference of opinion, if you will with many in the u.s. and many in europe about whether or not to arm ukraine. that takes center stage at the obama and merkel meeting, but it is key on theground. they want the cease-fire talks to be successful. in two days in the city of minsk, the capital of belarus. the european countries, germany and france will be part of the meeting to try to get some cease-fire going in the east of the country. frankly, the fighting there continues to escalate. this morning, a gigantic blast in the city of donetsk where an arms depot was hit. the peopl
