joining us is nbc news sam brock. and with us is former assistant director, an msnbc national security analyst. sam, what did we learn this morning? >> reporter: the developments have been nonstop. let's get to francisco oropesa. he is facing one murder charge. that's procedural. that will be elevated to five. the d.a. here saying that capital punishment will be considered. killing a child would be mitigating factor for bringing capital punishment. the same d.a. discussing possible charges in another county. he confirmed that oropesa's wife is in montgomery county jail. she is being looked at of transporting oropesa to the house about 15 or 20 miles away from where the massacre happened. he was spotted during what we thought was a false flag. law enforcement rushed highway 105. that was not oropesa. on foot. and days later, only two, he's uncovered in a nearby town called cut and shoot, texas. a second person is also behind bars right now. that's two that's not the murder suspect. his name is domingo. he is facing a ma

sam brock joining us now. hback from state republicans, including a female senator who said this is all about controlling women. what are the chances this ban will pass? >> right now, there's a very fragile group of both democrats and republicans in the senate in south carolina that have banded together to prevent voting on this house version of the bill that would ban abortions at six weeks. there are two states in the region right now that have not deeply curtailed abortion rights. one is virginia, which is more blended politically. the other is south carolina. republicans in the state have not been able to agree how this law should actually play out, how extreme the ban should look. in terms of what's going on at this moment, you mentioned several lawmakers and specifically women -- there's sister senators, five women in the senate, three of them are republicans who have pushed back and said this goes way too far. they said the male colleagues have not been helpful. one tried to ask a question from the major

and joining me now is sam brock. so they will try to block it.en going back and forth for a year. here is the situation. you are talking about a state in south carolina where a republican supermajority and they are baing do have a complete ban or that fetal heartbeat. and they say that the legislation just goes too far, a decision that should be made between a woman and her physician, her husband or partner and that is not what is happening here. and they are also objecting to amendments. and it begins with a fertilized egg, not when it actually implants in the uterus. and one opponent said that is starting the clock two weeks early. and it removes the section that allows up to 12 weeks of pregnancy for minors. but there are exceptions for rape and incest. and so we're talking about doctors fearful perhaps that they somehow breach the six week time line. these are some of the changes that the folks in the senate that oppose the bill have really pointed out. this is an important point. south carolina is the only state that has not severely curtail

joining us now is nbc's sam brock. what's the latest on the search for the suspect today?> reporter: certainly it's heart wrenching what we're witnesses here, jose. i just got off the phone with the fbi. they told me there's no public availability scheduled today in terms of updates from local and federal law enforcement and no indication there's been any material developments in the search, which of course begs the question what do we know right now for communities like this one. there's roughly 250 members of law enforcement across the board right now that are literally going through communities like this one, jose. i'm in cleveland, texas, right now, not far from that school where 9-year-old daniel guzman attended. whether it is surveillance, contact, anything that might help them piece together where oropesa went. as far as the dragnet that was established in the immediate aftermath of this massacre, that happened on saturday. it was a roughly two-mile wide dragnet. they had him tracked, the cell phone, the scent of his clothing and somehow he just magically disappeare

sam brock is outside the jail in cold spring, texas.be it could have been avoided. there were a number of calls, past complaints. tell us all you know about this arrest. >> reporter: the time line is something that's being examined. at this moment, there are at least three people in custody. oropesa is one of them. he is in jail charged with murder. within the last hour or so, a booking photo of his wife was tweeted out by a neighboring county. she's wanted right now or facing charges of hindering the apprehension of a felon. there's another man who is in this jail on a marijuana charge but has been linked to aiding and abetting his escape. authorities just yesterday said they had no idea where he was. that was not entirely true. we found out this morning earlier in the week when there was what we thought was a false alarm at a nearby highway 101 main road around a number of schools that had to shut down, turns out he was on foot at that point, potentially near children. that was on monday. authorities knew he was in the region. he had

. >> sam brock, do we know -- it's been four days since that time. taken this long for law enforcement to get him? >> that's a great question. there were some thought that he might have gone to mexico. coordination between local agencies here and international police agencies across the -- border certainly, there was also a lot of -- analytics. we were given brief updates but the -- past couple of days. it's all these pieces coming in from -- there was an 80,000 dollar reward and they were trying to -- together, but how it could be, mehdi, that they had him, initially, within a two miles search radius, and then he was gone for days. that's one of the open-ended questions right now. and authorities are probably breathing a sigh of relief because there was deep concern that this guy was armed and dangerous. -- three firearms at least in his house, and we're warning the public that there was potentially a handgun that he used as well. so, here we are with a -- community that has been unnerved -- staying in their homes, a lot of them walking around with

sam brock joining us with the details. sam, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the suspect accused much murdering five people including a child is behind bars this morning. we are learning about the additional arrests, and the manhunt is over. a man described as a monster is finally behind bars this morning, captured in a private home, ending an intense four-day manhunt. >> he was caught hiding in a closet underneath some laundry. >> reporter: this video appears to show the moment that francisco oropeza was taken into custody. a crucial phone call to a tip line led to his arrest. >> we just want to thank the person who had the courage and bravery to call in the suspect's location. >> reporter: oropesa accused of killing his five neighbors. authorities say he became enraged. the arrest comes as new details emerge as a man deported from the u.s. four times. the district attorney saying he allegedly beat his wife last june, prompting her to file a protective order. although, the da says she ultimately didn't press charges. >> there were multiple occasions, we are n

sam brock joins us now with the latest. sam, any way that you put this, it's an awful tragedy.is that the sheriff says it appears that he did nothing illegal, nothing wrong here. what more do we know about the circumstances? >> the depth of the tragedy is hard to articulate. we know there was a back story, which is the owner of the gas station had experienced issues previously with thefts at his store and had called police and reported it. apparently in this case, as you suggested, the authorities say there was no evidence that this 14-year-old had actually tried to steal the water bottles. he picked up four and put them down. according to authorities, he chased the boy out of the store. that picture came courtesy of state representative todd rutherford who received it from the boy's mother. he said he did a double-take because he said it looked like his own son. when authorities responded, they did find a firearm near cyrus. there's no indication at all that that firearm was wielded or pointed at the shop owner. shockingly so, the shop owner spoke to the sheriff about what act

nbc's sam brock has more on that story. hey, sam. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. in cleveland, texas, this morning so thick you can barely see in front of you. the fourth day of the search for a murder suspect whose face, as you can see is appearing on billboards. this morning we are also learning the father of the murdered 9-year-old boy contacted police five times in 20 minutes waiting for aid that came after the massacre. despite dogs roaming the streets and police canvassing neighborhoods, there's been no sign of francisco oropesa who police say erupted into violence when asked by neighbors not to file his assault rifle on the front lawn. >> it is truly just unexpected. >> reporter: on monday, a few false alarms as neighbors try to manage their terror. teresa morris heard shots from her daughter's shot down the street that friday night but had no idea the depth of violence unfolding. has it sunk in that you were witness to this gunfire? >> that's what sort of -- oh, i get a little emotional thinking about it. i was here when that happened. and i didn't do anyt

nbc news correspondent sam brock is following this story for us so, sam, this shooting happened lastt file charges against the officers. can you just remind us what happened in this case? >> reporter: absolutely. zinhle, good to be with you. about a year old. hung over jackson county, missouri, since march of 2022 and, zinhle, it all started with a call over a disturbance at a house. when police arrived they found a car that matched the description of what the caller called in was trying to break into their house but followed it but lose police a mile away even less than that and the car you're looking at ends up getting into a car accident plowing through a red light striking another vehicle. the police for several minutes responded on scene. you see them there taking one of the passengers who was in the backseat out of the car, meantime, the driver, tyre pryor was in the front seat and theyspot an ar-15 style rifle and tries to remove it. then they think there is another pistol but this wasn't and they tilled tyrea pryor and now questions are why was there not more scrutiny and cri

nbc news correspondent sam brock is live from cold spring, texas. joining us is phillip mud, former deputy director of the cia counterterror center. sam, what is the latest we know this morning on this investigation? >> reporter: so ana, a deep sigh of relief for everybody here in southeast texas. over my shoulder, you'll see the county jail and we do know for a fact that francisco oropesa is inside right now. he is awaiting a $5 million bond hearing at some point this morning, and it really puts to rest the question of whether or not he was located here, somewhere else in the state of texas or perhaps in mexico. as you mentioned a second ago, the suspect was only about 15 miles away from where the massacre occurred. hearing an update from officials here, a couple of very pertinent pieces of information. there have now been multiple arrests. it's not just oropesa. we are also learning it was potentially his wife who was arrested. the sheriff of montgomery county, neighboring county here confirming to us or at least to the associated press at this po

joining us now from cleveland, texas, nbc news correspondent sam brock. sam, good morning. what's the state of the search here? >> reporter: willie, good morning. right now, there is a thick fog surrounding cleveland, texas, to the point where you can barely see about 5 or 10 feet in front of you. those are the conditions right now that investigators are trying to find francisco orepeza. it is improbable the person would be cornered by investigators in a 2-mile search field and, somehow, be able to elude them. this was on saturday. as you mentioned, his cell phone was being tracked. clothes, there was a scent this. investigators found both but not the suspect. i'm in cleveland. you see the sign, "wanted for murder," in spanish, this man. the mailboxes next to it, this is a residential area. highly wooded, mud roads leading to places where it is hard to see where you are going. these are the topographical challenges that investigators, 250 plus of them, are still going for right now. we are going to be rubbing up against 96 hours with no answers. as you talk to people, they

joining me from cleveland, texas, is nbc news correspondent sam brock. you got a lot of people looking for him. how has he managed to escape the area? >> reporter: i don't know. that's a great question. in the immediate after math of that mass ker, they had him in a two or three mile radius. they had tracked his phone and the scent of his clothing and not oropesa. there's an $80,000 incentive for people to come forward and volunteer information. it doesn't mean it's going to produce anything credible. just a couple of hours ago, we saw this incredible marshaling of resources from state, local and federal authorities to montgomery county, texas, which is only about 20 miles away from where i'm standing right now after someone who looked like oropesa was spotted, but it turns out it was obviously not him. it just shows you, though, the rapidity with which officers and law enforcement is responding right now. this is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. look over my shoulder, you'll see the sign which shows advertised in spanish the suspect wanted f
