sam cass is director of the let's move campaign. i had the chance to speak with him yesterday.oined now from the white house by sam cass, thank you for joining me. >> thank you for having me. >> so sam, we saw the first lady very fired up this week. she's very passionate about these changes that members of congress are trying to make. >> yeah, she is deeply engaged and very concerned about what we're seeing on the hill. right now, we're seeing politicians putting politics and industry interests ahead of what's good for our kids and ahead of the recommendations from our knew trigss and experts who have helped set good standards for what should be served to our kids in schools. it's deeply concerning. we have seen this before. not too long ago congress stepped in under a lot of entry pressure and classified sauce in pizza as a vegetable as part of the program. so we're seeing this play out again. that's why she's so deeply concerned and trying to do erg we can from preventing that from happening. >> it's my understanding that the standards are starting to work. certainly we're se

joining me now, executive director of lets move, and senior policy adviser on nutrition, sam cass, ang to you. >> how are you? >> i'm good. let's start with the core of the dispute here between michelle obama and some house republicans. what is critical about having these standard? what would be wrong with letting some district maybe waive them? >> well, what we are seeing right now is an attempt for politics and politicians to really override our, our scientists, nutritionists to set standards about what our kids should be eating in school. we know we need to put our kids first. we have seen this before. not so long ago, congress stepped in. along with industry interests to determine pizza should be a vegetable in our school lunch program. parents everywhere know that is ridiculous. what we are seeing is an attempt to wind back the standards. and not putting what's best for health and well being at the forefront. >> sam, i wish pizza was a vegetable. >> yeah, you know. wishful thinking. that's just not the case. >> politicians and politics here. this is politics do. you think it is

sam cass, executive director of michelle obama's let's move campaign and senior adviser for nutrition is joining us now. sam, thanks for taking the time. as you saw right there, michelle obama putting a lot of her attention and time to putting really her name on getting healthier lunches in schools. what was her reaction when this bill -- this bill failed essentially in committee trying to change this bill? >> well, we expected that vote yesterday in the republican house, but, you know, what she's really concerned about is seeing politicians and industry influence really stepping on the wisdom of our, you know, scientists and nutritionalists who are setting a standard for what our kids should or shouldn't be eating in our schools. we know we have to let science lead us to those kind of decisions and not our politicians. >> that kind of murky relationship though is nothing new in washington and nothing new to this white house. they understand how the politics games work. why can't you work behind the scenes to fix this? what are you going to do now because the effort to drop this waive
