sam dodge is the new director of the mayor's office of housing apartment opportunity partnership and hope. >> sam joins us live this morning from just outside san francisco city hall. sam, good morning to you. >> good morning. thanks for having me. >> so real quick clarification. can you tell me what's the exact budget the city has to attack the homeless problem? is it about $240 million? >> reporter: we spend $240 million a year. but half of that is on permanent housing for over 8,000 individuals. so the other half is a combination of medical expenditures and shelters, outreach teams and drop-in centers. >> if appears the budget continues to rise over the number of years but the number of homeless living on the streets of san francisco is about the same. about isics thousand or so. is the answer, sam, from your eyes more money or is it not more money? >> with more resourcers we can do. that's a simple equation. we also need to be smart about how we are investing our resources and what kind of system we are building so we are ending people's homelessness instead of just maintaining th

that would be interesting for me to know sort of know about. >> supervisor, sam dodge mayor's office of hope and yes, there is a work group that has been looking at it from the provider's perspective. supervisors we have an opportunity with the health and safety bond on the ballot for june to look at some capital investments to make with homeless service sites and would be helpful not just to make investments in the long-term viability of the city owned sites but to help convert some of their practices to be more inviting and welcome being and accommodate the things that we have seen at the navigation center work very well whether it's being able to come in as a couple or storage belongings or the accommodation of small pets so some of the practices can definitely be done. they're going to need some investments made in some of the older service sites but it can happen and we're actively looking at that. i think one thing i want to remind that actually the present shelter system isn't the answer for everyone but it's the answer for many people and so as we talk about different models
