cnn's sam kiley is in kyiv for us tonight, where civilians are being targeted. more do we know about the missile attacks across ukraine today? i understand you were able to make it to the scene where missile debris struck and killed a civilian near kyiv. >> reporter: yes, that's right, john. tragically, onse civilian was killed in kyiv, not withstanding the fact the local authorities say the air defenses is here shooting down the cruise missiles attacking the city. the gentleman who was killed, a man in his 50s, was hit by falling debris close to a power generating plant on the outskirts of the city. a tragic accident effectively. there were ten other people around the country also killed in similar strikes. the authorities say that more than 50 cruise missiles were fired at ukraine. the vast majority, some 47, were shot down. that's on top of the number of drones. these are the much more unsophisticated drones manufactured in iran, john, that are used to soak up the air defenses that the ukrainians say they so desperately need to protect themselves against just

cnn's senior international correspondent sam kiley is in the ukrainian capital of kyiv for us tonight, sam? >> reporter: well, wolf, the latest has been a repeat, really, of the pattern that you and i have discussed for some months which is the use of shahed iranian drones followed by cruise missiles fired overnight by russia to try to destroy the energy generating and distribution capacities of ukraine. now, in the latest attack, the ukrainians say that over the kyiv airspace alone they shot down 20 cruise missiles. 20 cruise missiles. some of them armed with warheads carrying some 400 kilos of high explosive, others completely empty repurposed nuclear weapons without the nuclear warhead, of course, but the shaheds are used, both of them and alongside the former nuclear missiles, the cruise missiles to soak up and waste effectively the surface to air defense capabilities of ukraine and it's that really that president zelenskyy is calling out for more and more loudly with every wave of these missile attacks. this was his latest plea. >> translator: this evil, this russian aggression c

sam kiley is in the capital of kyiv.nd words were for the current description of play. >> well, he is making increasingly loud pleas for strategic weapons, jim. you will recall that last week there was this big constravistry when the americans and the germans would break the seal on the weapons, but those are not strategic weapons, but battlefield weapons and although more strategic and potent for what the ukrainians want, but what they really want is long-range missiles, and they are not getting them, because the united states and other countries are fearing that the longer range missiles will be used to attack inside targets inside of russia, itself. that is a slightly peculiar argument given the enormously long border between ukraine and russia means that if the ukrainians wanted to attack targets within the russian borders, it could do so. and jim, the president here, he has right back to 11 months ago pleaing with the international community to allow the fighting of jet bomber jets, and potentially get hold of m-16s

cnn's sam kiley is in kyiv. >> reporter: all of the ukrainian focus in terms of the publicity they'rew to what the russians are doing in this war is focused on a town a few miles south of donetsk, itself captured by russian backed forces back in 2014. it's not very far from the front line there and it has been pounded, they say, with more than 300 artillery and other aerial attacks on that town, on their forces based in that town. they believe partly perhaps as a campaign to draw their forces away from the other focus of russian violence and also part of their ongoing campaign to try to capture what remains in ukrainian hands of the risk of donetsk province. this is coming at a time when the ukrainian ambassador to france says in his estimation there's now some 300 plus tanks have been promised by nato and other western allies to the ukrainian war effort. now, some of these may arrive in a matter of weeks. many of them, though, will be months away. it's not yet clear whether they are able to bring them in quickly enough to make a significant difference either to ukrainian plans to con

sam kiley is in kyiv, standing by for us. how is this news being received in ukraine right now? >> reporter: with some delight, i have to say, kate. president zelenskyy obviously welcomes it. he's been asking for some 300 tanks, at the same time the defense minister has said he's anticipating some more good news. that would be the 30 tanks that oren is referring to that we're expecting the u.s. president to announce is being supplied to ukraine. on the front line, we've been in touch with soldiers on the front line. they're particularly pleased to hear they'll be coming, because they've been running out of these particular pieces of equipment. they've had to capture a lot of tanks from russia and repurpose them, but they are running low. and they have been particularly useful. on the training front, yes, it could take months to training a fresh recruit, but it won't take long to train a seasoned tank fighter. they probably have the most experience in all of nato how to drive and fight with a tank. they don't know how to filly drive the leopards, the abrams. ultimately they said

sam kiley is in kyiv for us. he's standing by. ning about these attacks today? >> reporter: well, kate, they followed the pattern that we've seen elsewhere in many times sadly from the ukrainian perspective over the last few months in which iranian made fires were fired and then the cruise missiles all fired. all 20 fired at kyiv according to local authorities here were shot down. the debris from one of them killed a 50 plus-year-old man here. quite close to a significant energy generating plant here in the capital. elsewhere in the country, ten people were killed. the level of violence of these attacks, the ukrainians have got quite cused to and they're deliberate effects of infrastructure to function during the winter months when power is so dearly needed. they're getting good at fims things. in the last few hours they've been able to bring up the power systems to be able to supply most of the capital city with what it needs in terms of the critical areas such as hospitals and elsewhere. they're not being seen as some kind of res

sam kiley, he is in kyiv for us, and what did you hear from zelenskyy today? >> he is renewing the pleas for missiles and jets today, and in which they need to continue to prosecute this war to rid their country of the russians and russians troops, and they know that from the russian perspective if they can be outlasted by russia, things are going to be extremely difficult for ukraine. there is a consensus inside of the ukrainian government that over the next year, they really do need to get to victory, and victory from their perspective is the recapture and not just of areas that the russians invaded and currently holding 11 months ago, kate, but the areas called crimean peninsula, but the areas that the russians have seized with the help of separatists in 2014/2015. so to do that they need the strategic weapons. they are delighted to get the tactical support in the form of tanks that the cry meanian ambassador could number to close to 300 which is what they are asking for in terms of tanks, but they believe that the unanimity of the donation and the supply o

diamond live at the white house, just after this important announcement, let's go to kyiv and cnn's sam kiley is there. president zelenskyy has said i need tanks on the battlefield. tanks by their very nature are more an offensive weapon. yes, you can use them to defend territory but meant to maneuver, reclaim or take territory, is that the next chapter in this war once the tanks arrive? >> reporter: well, the ukrainians have made no secret of their strategic agenda which is to drive the russians out of their territory in their entirety and that will include the crimean peninsula. that at the moment is something not quite a pipe dream but definitely a distant dream. what they're really trying to fixate on at the moment is making sure that they still have the sort of momentum they showed over the summer with those lightning advances, recapturing large amounts of territory around kharkiv and then in the autumn we saw in the fall the capture of kherson or the recapture of kherson. since then, the battlefield is what stole. winter has come and most importantly they have begun to run out of the he
