the gun harm reduction ordinance was introduced by san jose mayor sam liccardo, who says that he felted to act following the deadly workplace shooting at the vita railyard last year. mayor liccardo is hoping to ease the financial burden of gun violence on city residents. under this ordinance, gun owners would be charged an annual $25 fee that would go toward nonprofits that address gun violence. the measure would also require gun owners to obtain liability insurance that would cover any damage caused by their weapon. the mayor believes paying for insurance and registration upfront is cheaper than the cost of gun violence later. sounds a taxpayer subsidized gun ownership. to the tune of $151 for every household that owns a gun in this city, or nearly $40 million per year, and that's the cost to pay for public services, particularly emergency response services. for gun violence. it is our belief that these costs should be the responsibility of gun owners. our proposal. will make sounds a safer city to live when now there is pushback to this proposed ordinance, including vocal opposition
