we got permission and samhsa helped us develop a script. and this psa featured this gorgeous young actress who was the woman with bipolar disorder in the story referring young people to a special landing page, a web site. and we tracked the traffic. there were huge spikes the day of the show and the day after this psa aired. and kids actually could enter discussion threads. and there were some really heart-breaking stories in there; kids who said, "i've been telling my parents for 2 years there's something wrong with me; now i know i have bipolar disorder, they don't believe me." well, in this case it was one of samhsa's partner groups, they had trained therapists in the discussion group who could actually refer kids to help. and when we come back, we're going to be talking a little bit more about media literacy and how the general public can get engaged. we'll be right back. ith samhsa on a number of different projects. the prism awards is probably the most high profile project that we do at samhsa. it's a good collaboration because our goals are very compatible, getting sound information to the general public in the areas of treatment, addiction, recovery, and also in the area of mental health. i've never struggled with anything myself. i do know from delving into this man, orrin hunt, who is dealing with his, you know, disorder, there is a lot of hope. it's not a thing you're stuck with; it's a thing that is a journey. it's part of a journey and it might be hard sometimes, but it's definitely, if you take the right steps, and everything is surmountable, i think. as we all were working on "crazy heart," we knew men and women who had struggled with addiction, we can't really know what that's like, how hard it is, but we used inspiration from friends and family members that we all knew and know that you can change your life. bottom line, this is not a short-term process. the minute these types of prog

fran, talk to us a little bit about what samhsa is doing to prevent youth from getting into trouble? we're actually doing a lot, especially in the last couple of years. we have, with our new administration, samhsa has made prevention of substance abuse and mental illness a priority, which has really put a lot of energy across the country into doing prevention programs for our young people. the biggest, which we've been doing a lot of talking about, approach, is to get to the parents. we just released a media campaign that showed that 40 percent of our young people between the ages of 12 and 20 have used alcohol and are experimenting with it. now that means 60 percent have not. so we are seeing a steady decline but not enough. we don't want 40 percent of our young people using. so we are working with our parents in programming, we're working with increasing our community program. we are mixing together both evidence-based programs, which mark talked a little bit about in the treatment area, we have the same type of programs and prevention that are based in evidence with what monique t

how is samhsa involved in that effort? samhsa is very involved and i think this is an area where a lot of leadership has been exhibited by and throughout samhsa, again in partnerships with people across the country. what we know is that there is an incredible workforce that is waiting to be mobilized. people who have at some point in their lives struggled with these issues, they understand the impact. we don't need to do the educational piece about the importance of this issue and the negative consequences and also the power of recovery, because these individuals have experienced this, just like we heard right here. i think it's a powerful story and experience. so in our workforce strategy, part of that is capitalizing and mobilizing this very rich resource that is present in every single community across the country. is there a way to provide tools to those individuals who have that interest, have that experience, and then will have those tools in the hands, to help their fellows in their own communities? it's a powerful,

[music] samhsa has tried to do a lot to encourage the media and the entertainment industry to do the right thing in the way they portray substance use disorders, the way they portray mental illness, the way they portray people with those issues, and the way they portray people in recovery. we do that by providing awards to people and to the industry for doing it right and we also try to call them, call them meaning, call them out when they do it incorrectly. sometimes it's, i think, done inadvertently, and so educating, i think, is important and we try to do that. when we see a new movie or a new television show or something portraying these issues in an incorrect way, we like to try to get a hold of the producers or a hold of the people who are doing it and let them know that that's not a good way to do it and not acceptable. so both the carrot and stick approach and also trying to work with advocacy communities around the country when they do those things as well in providing data and providing information the best way that we can. one of the things an audience can do is to demand

our most recent survey from samhsa is that around 10 million, a little over 10 million of our young peoplel and substances. that actually breaks down to 26 percent of them are drinking and another 17 percent of them are binge drinking, which is having more than five drinks in a row at one setting. so it's a concern of ours that our young people are really starting to accelerate drinking and drugging than they have in the past.
