samsung versus apple. for over three years, the two companies have clashed in a scale almost unprecedented in business history and engaged in a series of tit for tat lawsuits that have cost more than $1 billion. the battle is being fought outside the courtroom as well, of course. samsung just announced its galaxy edge at an event in new york. on tuesday, apple is set to unveil not only a new iphone or iphones but details on a long awaited smart watch. who'll ultimately come out on top in the great smart phone war between apple and samsung? i spoke with michael gorman and ryan reiff, director of mobile device at i.b.c. i started by asking ryan what his biggest wish for the new iphone is. >> you have this iphone user base that has been using the same size screen relatively for the life of the iphone since it has been around. this will be the game changer with regard to the screen size. it changes the user experience. it is more real estate. >> will it be a game changer if they are the last to market? >> they

like internet tv which may also be launched today by apple, that will expose companies like samsung versus apple which has a sticky system. >> following a product release, according to data, apple tends to lag. as time goes on, however, the stock outperforms with the biggest gains taking place six and 12 months after the release. >> if you look at it, it's saying the most reaction comes 12 months later, but there are so many other factors that could be moving the share price on that. on top of that, there have been now six different iphones and a few more on top of that. it's been over seven years since 2007. essentially all that chart is really saying is since the first iphone, apple has done really well. what drives the share price now, is it innovation in general or bottom line sales? >> that chart is pretty good. i think it still is the iphone. the iphone represents 50% more of sales, probably 50% more of profits, we don't know. both of these products have come out since 2007. they're very recent products. and so i think the key is the iphone 6 and the upgrading system. >> but do you still w

are having trouble maintaining the momentum that they once had as apple's archrival in the business. >> when you look at samsung versust's very difficult to compare the two because apple is really a platform business where they own phones but they also the software which is facilitating that connection between developers and consumers. samsung is a linear business. they have been selling a lot of their hardware. the don't actually own platform business. they are a component of the ecosystem rather than being an owner. >> was that apple's secret genius? they made us believe they were a consumer device company. remember the beauty of design, ease of use? genius is in the software. that is really how they have asserted their dominance in a way. >> [indiscernible] it is google who snookered samsung. >> that's a very good point. with apple, the software doesn't matter unless you build a great first product. apple will never get to the point where they get developers making apps for apple software unless they make a really awesome phone and sell millions of those first year and a half. if samsung were beat -- were to be suc

samsung versus iphone. >> yes. >> so which -- >> it's getting really difficult to say -- to point the finger. people have iphones love their iphones. appleking you in their walled garden with itunes, all the music you have, with the apps and everything. you can see they're holding on to their market share. people are switching, though, people are jumping ship so apple has to get people back and look there's exciting stuff they'll try to work into the new phone. we're hearing about wireless charging which i think would be phenomenal. we're hearing about near-field communication, like if you have e-z pass or the badge you use at work to get through that door they might build that technology into the phone. not the first time we've seen this technology in a smart phone but often times when apple does something it tends to catch on. so we'll see what happens. >> i can't wait. >> i'm excited. >> i am, too, brett larson, thank you so much. thank you for joining me. i'm carol costello. >>> taking aim at isis terrorists, president obama gets set to outline his strategy. we're going to take a look at what you can expect. hundreds of children sick

versus apple. how that translates into unit sales, yet to be seen. remember, this is a battle that will continue not just over the next couple of months but throughout the year and samsung has a story to protect here. >> jon, quick word, though. last week you said that all of this hardware is putting samsung at risk of becoming sony. after seeing these devices what call would you make today? >> i stand by that. i was specifically talking about smart watches here. that landscape is confusing and going to get increasingly so as we see new watches from the lg, from motorola and from samsung on a couple of different operating systems. somebody's going have to explain this to consumers, not only what they do but why they need one and how to make a decision between the different shape, the different software. on phones specifically, samsung and apple have the megaphones here in terms of marketing dollars and in terms of brand. so this isn't that complicated from sang seumsung. note is the any one and have many to show people. >> from 5.3 inches to 5.5 inches to 5.7 inches and keeping it at 5.7 inches. apple coming out with with think with a 5.5 inch. what is the right big pho

over the years, you and i have talked about apple versus samsung.rets.ll about trade it's something they perceive as something their competitors want to have and they have taken steps to try to keep it confidential. example of a trade secret as opposed to a patent is the formula for coca-cola. andst a year ago, coca-cola that particular combination, they cap it a closely guarded secret. they considered it to be a valuable piece of information. there were promotional ads regarding this robot that they were using as a promotional. are they going to be able to for a tradecase secret when they were making aspects of this public? did they give everything away and this advertisement or was this something where they held those secrets back? t-mobile continues to buy stuff from huawei -- that they have already discontinued that relationship. they have had to go and seek another partner. in this case, their representative has acknowledged some wrongdoing. thank you very much. it's a fascinating story that we will continue to follow. more coming up right afte
