williams and samuel understood the myriad ways that service might alter the social status of enslavedeople without ever hearing a word of douglass's eloquent words or lieber's argument about natural law. decades after the war, singleton argued, "i wore the uniform of those men in blue." he wrote those words at a time that reconstruction was nearly diminished by jim crow violence. that uniform served as a symbol of promise and devastation. the black soldiers in the western theater represented an array of experiences, but each of them served with a measured hope and genuine concern for liberty and citizenship on the basis of equality. samuel married jane knox. then his grandfather, william polk. not a lot known about him. he will be the main focus of what i have to say and where he came from. what we know about him is that he married a lady by the name of margaret taylor. they lived initially in maryland and then moved to pennsylvania and moved to north carolina in the early 1750's. they had five sons. three daughters. no one knows where they lived in north carolina. no one knows where he is buried. like i say, he is not a well-known figure. in the course -- the president was the fourth generation of the polks in north carolina. by that time, i think the family had lost track of their early history and where they had come from. what they know about it was expressed in the words of colonel william polk of raleigh. late in his life, when he is in his 70's, 1830, he wrote a short autobiographical sketch in which he talked about himself. he has this short statement of the origin of the family. he says that william polk, talking about himself, a third person autobiography, is a descendent of a family who em
