my grandfather came to san francisco from sicily. he got his very first job at eight years old lighting street lamps at fisherman's wharf. he eventually bought himself a boat and by the time of the great earthquake in 1906, he had several fishing boats. when the fire began to destroy san francisco, he loaded neighbors on to the bow. it was on that last boat he was introduced to my grandmother as he led her into the fishing boat for safety. my grandfather met my grandmother, and together, they tried to rebuild a city. san francisco has given my family so much opportunity and i would like to make sure our city continues to be a city of opportunity for everyone. san francisco is a place for history and we honor our past. we have also always looked forward to the future. what was once a gold rush town -- we became a center of finance and business, and when technology became a driving industry in the world, we became a center for people looking to launch new companies and new ideas. as a supervisor, i've focused on a future and saw the ne

i represent both san francisco and the san mateo. what i found is many individuals who used to live in san francisco do not anymore. they are in san mateo county. when you ask why, number-one, because quality of the public education that their kids were getting was not there. what did they do? they send their kids to private school. you can handle one child and public schoolone childtwo -- one child in public school, but two you cannot. the jobs were not there, so they had to move. finally, the cost of living, housing, those other variables we need to work on. we have to improve the quality of public education across the city, not just some areas or schools. you have to also provide additional money to developers to develop affordable housing. finally, we need the diversity of jobs. a variety of jobs that fit all qualifications. that is how you keep the middle class from leaving san francisco. >> thank you. [applause] >> i would do four things. at first, i would build more middle-class affordable housing in san francisco. right now w

staying in san francisco, families choosing to stay in san francisco. i want to fully fund education and san francisco. but eighth year of my administration, to fully fund education, and expanding schools and sports programs and libraries. i want to build affordable housing in san francisco. i want to support local property owners to prevent defaults and foreclosures. i want to look at how the banks can write down loans and property, house is that are underwater. properties where if we did that we would give families much more buying power and put more money into the local economy to support local jobs. >> yes, i feel that housing. we're talking about housing, is the central crisis and san francisco because we are this beautiful little peninsula surrounded by a lot of water and a lot of people who want to live here. we already have a lot of rich people living here, and i would stop building housing for the wealthy. that is it, moratorium on market-rate housing. if we do not develop any more of it until we develop housing for the rest of us, for the midd

i've lived in san francisco. i have worked hard to assist the often overlooked, the disenfranchised, pork, limited english-speaking population in san francisco. because this group is not in the popular voting bloc, it is not easy for them to access city hall or other nonprofit organizations. i can proudly say my hard work has resulted in these individuals who can now help themselves. i created jobs for struggling musicians in chinatown to promote their talent and bring truth back to chinatown and in all speech. i promoted the rich cultural music here in return for my efforts, i have become their leader. i can say that i have helped in a small way. small businesses because of the art and music from within the community. it has been a win-win situation for the artists, community residents and merchants. there are many issues equally pressing women of color, care, and is equally pressing in all the complexities surrounding it, to be frank. none of the other candidates are mentioning any of these important issues. i

we have to do what san diego did. in our case, it is by attacked, clean technology, and digital media. we have over 200 clean technology companies and i will develop a success plan for every neighborhood commercial district. every neighborhood commercial district need something different, and we will put that together. >> we have the income tax, parcel tax, floor tax, a lot more regulation. do you really want that? are you ready for that? unreal. i don't think the middle class and san francisco can pay that. i am not sure the rich can pay that. we have to go back to 0-based budgeting. i know that is foreign to everybody appear, but it is worth every penny goes to zero. that is how we increased revenue 40%. it would have to jump-start business by reducing the unnecessary fees, red tape that is precluding and stopping businesses from working in san francisco. is that simple. the revenue will come in. we have to do something like reducing the parking meter rates so local businesses to be patronized. this is not rocket sc

we need to do a lot in san francisco to encourage young people and young families to stay in san francisco. i think we are missing out on a lot of our diversity when young families leave our city. we need to do all we can to be mindful of the needs of young families in the city. we mentioned housing. schools are a big deal. but also being able to be flexible with transportation and children. >> what is happening with crime in your district? give me your thoughts on how you think the police are doing with respect to crime in your district? >> i think we are very fortunate in district two. we have a number of great police captains that oversee the stations that touched district two. richmond and northern are the two major police stations that touched the district. we do have a lot of crime in district 2. both crimes against individuals but also against merchants along our merchant corridors. chestnut. union in particular has been hit. fillmore and sacramento. it is a big deal. we also have the break-ins. we need to be very mindful that people keep their iphones and laptops out of sight. but

of san francisco. these people need our support. these people need to be nurtured. they are involved in an beautiful experiment, trying to envision a just world and they need to some support, and they need to have a roof over their heads, even if this is just fabric. it is shocking that our city will not allow us to have this, and that the mayor, who is responsible. whose side are you on? >> the next speaker? i am carolyn miers, a citizen in support of occupy san francisco. we saw all over the world how the people of the world were rising up and they were fighting for what they think we have here, which wheat -- which is democracy. it is something that all of us want to have here. what i would like task is, everyone involved in a political party, urged them to stop taking corporate donations. but i look at congress and i feel like they are too far gone, the two main parties -- when you have someone you love, democracy, they are a drug addict and you have to have an intervention and occupy san francisco
