this was mentioned san francisco has a long history called the san francisco model for how we respond to public health crisis. that is how we responded a generation ago to the aids crisis. i think we saw that again how our city responded to covid-192 and a half years ago and seeing it again today so i want to say how grateful i am to the leadership of our city and public health officialess and senator wiener and president walton and (inaudible) i like to hand it off to tyler, the ceo of the san francisco aids foundation. >> public health crisis. a community filled with fear, unanswered questions and valid outrage. resilient people that had to rise up in support of one another to educate each ort and fight for access for resources they need and deserve. a moment in history where a federal public health response fails a community causing them unnecessary emotional mental and physical harm. no, i'm not talking about chronically hiv policy from the earliest day when the federal government resisted addressing the onset of aids in our country. i reference this very moment in the nation hist

this is the beginning of san francisco absolutely coming back, and the downtown core here in san francisco is feeling it this week. >> rodney, are you concerned with our image problem when i'm talking about car break-ins, crime, homelessness because it's not just our secret in the bay area. a lot of people know about it cross-country. >> yeah. you know, i think the problems exist much on the west coast, and we're all dealing with that. i'll say the city of san francisco and the police chief and the mayor are doing a great job to try to fix the city as best they can. but we're all being villages about it. we're all helping each other, and san francisco residents, if someone's lost and needs directions, let's help them out because tourism employs so many of our san francisco families and youth, and we need to make sure that that's going strong here for years to come. >> like we said, tourism is the number one industry in san francisco, not tech or anything else. rodney, if you had a magic wand, are there two or three big things it's going to take to get tourism back to pre-pandemic levels? a

i was born in san diego and adopted out to san francisco when i was about 17 years old.ounced around a little bit here in high school, but i've always been here in the bay. we are an inclusive preschool, which means that we cater to emp. we don't turn anyone away. we take every child regardless of race, creed, religious or ability. the most common thing i hear in my adult life is oh, you don't seem like you have autism. you seem so normal. yeah. that's 26 years of really, really, really hard work and i think thises that i still do. i was one of the first open adoptions for an lgbt couple. they split up when i was about four. one of them is partnered, and one of them is not, and then my biological mother, who is also a lesbian. very queer family. growing up in the 90's with a queer family was odd, i had the bubble to protect me, and here, i felt safe. i was bullied relatively infrequently. but i never really felt isolated or alone. i have known for virtually my entire life i was not suspended, but kindly asked to not ever bring it up again in first grade, my desire to hav

you are watching san francisco rising. thanks for watching. >> i don't want to be involved in the process after it happens. i want to be there at the front end to help people with something in my mind from a very early age. our community is the important way to look at things, even now. george floyd was huge. it opened up wounds and a discussion on something festering for a long time. before rodney king. you can look at all the instances where there are calls for change. i think we are involved in change right now in this moment that is going to be long lasting. it is very challenging. i was the victim of a crime when i was in middle school. some kids at recess came around at pe class and came to the locker room and tried to steal my watch and physically assaulted me. the officer that helped afterwards went out of his way to check the time to see how i was. that is the kind of work, the kind of perspective i like to have in our sheriff's office regardless of circumstance. that influenced me a lot. some of the storefronts h

los angeles, san jose and new york. this is a change that is playing out across the country. here in san francisco, we need to do more to draw out our recovery and plan our future. san francisco is a city that has risen to the challenge before and we can again. we need to acknowledge five areas, vacancies and diversifying, enhancing vibrancy, maintaining a clean and safe city, increasing and improving access to downtown and growing our labor force. we have already made some progress in these areas. for example, together we passed a budget bringing festival and other activations downtown, supporting small businesses and recruiting and maintaining police officers and ambassadors on our street. those are positive steps but we have a lot to do. we need to be creative and be open to a wide range solutions. we think to think differently. this is about the future of our city. the reality is that so many of the programs and services we provide to help those most in need, the priority so many of us care about are funded, by taxe

i grew up in san francisco kind of all over the city. we had pretty much the run of the city 'cause we lived pretty close to polk street, and so we would -- in the summer, we'd all all the way down to aquatic park, and we'd walk down to the library, to the kids' center. in those days, the city was safe and nobody worried about us running around. i went to high school in spring valley. it was over the hill from chinatown. it was kind of fun to experience being in a minority, which most white people don't get to experience that often. everything was just really within walking distance, so it make it really fun. when i was a teenager, we didn't have a lot of money. we could go to sam wong's and get super -- soup for $1. my parents came here and were drawn to the beatnik culture. they wanted to meet all of the writers who were so famous at the time, but my mother had some serious mental illness issues, and i don't think my father were really aware of that, and those didn't really become evident until i was about five, i guess, and my marriag

i went to san francisco state university. i did stay home and i helped my parents work throughout the summers to learn what it is that makes our community so special. after graduating i worked for an investment bank in hong kong for a few years before returning when my dad said he was retiring. he passed away a few years ago. after taking over the business we made this a little more accessible for visitors as well as residents of san francisco to visit. many of our teas were traditionally labeled only in chinese for the older generation. today of our tea drinkkers are quite young. it is easy to look on the website to view all of our products and fun to come in and look at the different varieties. they are able to explore what we source, premium teas from the providence and the delicious flavors. san francisco is a beautiful city to me as well as many of the residents and businesses here in chinatown. it is great for tourists to visit apsee how our community thrived through the years. this retail location is open daily. we hav

san jose airport. the faa has said the guadalupe gardens is not a safe place for people to live and the city has been clearing people out of the area. rudy ortega has lived on the streets for more than seven years now, including one year near the airport. he's filed a restraining order asking the city to give him more time. ortega says the city promised to fix his trailer so he could move it, but says the city is death, threatening to demolish the trailer and force him out. my caseworker only contacted me once and said, oh, you're gonna go into a motel that same day. i still have a trailer here. hello what am i supposed to do? just leave it here? yeah leave it here. no i'm not going to leave it here. this is this is my money, my heart and money. ortega says he's working to raise the money to get the trailer fixed once the court to give him 30 days to get that work done. the city is not commenting on his request. the case is set to be heard this afternoon. gasia your time at 708. several people in berke
