mayor matt mahan was in san diego last week to tour the tents with san diego. mayor todd gloria. >> the test site in balboa park is hosting around 400 people and advocates say around 1300 people in total have cycled through in the last year. it's not the end goal, but it gives us the ability to scale alternatives to the street. san jose is looking at 9 potential sanctioned encampments. but unhoused advocates here at the bay and at san diego say it's not all positive. it's dishonest. san diego attorney and homeless advocate colleen que sack has followed the city's tent site since it started and worked with an house organizations that help manage the site. she says mold issues have persisted along with pests like rats. >> to pass this off as anything other than hiding homeless individuals away. it's disingenuous. she says out of the 1300 people cycling through the tense. >> only 82 people have been permanently housed. it's still something but few sacks as san jose needs to approach their proposed camps carefully really get people into housing. >> we're still goin

that's a big issue in oakland, san francisco, san jose, across the state. you're saying you've proposed a lot of tiny homes to be built, but in the interim, you're talking about some kind of some campground style housing of tents. tell me about it. and more importantly, where would those campgrounds be? yeah great question. so we need all of the above approach. we have this crisis of thousands of people living in totally unmanaged encampments with trash, fires, violence and crime. we've got to get people into managed sites with basic security, with supportive services. i was just down in san diego with mayor todd gloria. he personally gave me a tour of the safe sleeping sites. they have stood up the site. we toured has 400 tents in neat rows. porta potties, hand-washing stations, on site security, case management, health care workers coming on site. it's not the end goal, but it is a step forward. it offers more dignity and support for those living on our streets, and it significantly reduces the impacts of unsheltered homelessness on the broader community.

live in san francisco. ali, we are learning more about the fatal shooting of oakland police officer twan lay. he was killed during an undercover operation while following suspects in a burglary at a marijuana grow house. the officer, who was sitting in the passenger seat in the unmarked police car next to officer lay, has testified that the gunshots came from behind them. lay was struck in the head and died. the new information came during a preliminary hearing this week for the four men who are charged with murder and officer lay's death, uc berkeley administration and campus police say there is no longer a threat at the school. this morning, reports of gunfire at the clark kerr track on the southwest side of campus sent the school into lockdown yesterday, investigators said. witnesses described the shooter as a man with bleached hair and red or orange highlights, but campus police could not find that person. they say two gunshots went off near the track early in the morning, but there were no injuries and

we're outside coyote creek elementary here in san ramon, one of the many schools here in the san ramon valley unified school district. our colleague kris sanchez spoke to that new superintendent, c.j. cammack, who just took over as superintendent of this school district. he comes here from fremont unified, where he held the same position. superintendent karma says san ramon valley will be solvent this school year, but will face some very difficult financial challenges next school year. in 20 2526, when the district will have to make up $16.5 million in reductions through reductions, reductions that he and his staff will spend this year trying to identify. we are definitely seeing some financial challenges based on how the state had miscalculated or mis projected their total revenue for the year last year, and districts across the state, including san ramon valley unified school district, are dealing with that burden of having to address the shortfall in revenue that's coming forward from the state. and so we will have many challenges in front of us to identify how we can reduce our exp
