anywhere from possibly over two to three maybe even closer to four inches of rain in spots like san anselmo then in san francisco an inch and a half. santa cruz mountains over four inches of rain but look at livermore, just a little over half of an inch, so it's going to be very hit or miss with this storm system as to where the heaviest rain sets up and also going to still have the high wind speeds. a getting a very gusty southerly wind picking up to close to 60 miles ho ao in livermore so tha something we have to watch but the winds will start to calm down today. snowfall totals start out with some of the higher elevations but start to lower headed into friday, so we could see still some significant rainfall totals we'll be watching our rivers in spots like the russian river in gu guerneville. friday morning is when we have to watch the river stages and the napa river in downtown napa will be very close to the flood stage, if we get our current track of the rainfall totals we are expecting. a lot of things to watch here, mike, and you're also seeing some drivers crashing. >> we have two c

. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live in san ansel anselmo. how is it looking now? eporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. we're getting soaked as the rain comes down in downtown san ansel anselmo. this area has historic flooding. in the building they have sandbags set up. from past experience, covering some of the stuff, we're not seeing as many sandbags but of course that can change as we see more rain throughout the day. but before we talk more about san anselmo, i want to show you cell phone video from the drive from mill valley to san anselmo through corte madera. you want to have the windshield wipers ready to go because the rain is coming down as you're driving throughout at least the section of the north bay that we're in. now, back here to san anselmo, in the north bay, you got ross valley fire department saying their staffing will be increase as a result of this, a swift water rescue team in place on standby, because there's plenty of concerns. the concerns first and foremost are if there will be flooding. obviously right now we're not at that flood

look behind me at san anselmo creek. it is rushing at this point. i have seen whole tree limbs come all the way down this waterway right now, but let's start you first at the creek. at the edge of point reyes station the water has risen so much at the creek it is flirting at the bottom of this bridge spilling onto the front steps of some homes. back here in san anselmo excess water caused the creek to jump its banks hours ago and continue to push closer to businesses right off sir francis drake boulevard. homeowners around here are very familiar with the problems that crop up. >> our house was flooded three years in a row. so it gives you an idea if the levees aren't right and that kind of thing and you get these storms and the tide comes up, a lot of low lying areas are going to get whacked. >> reporter: san anselmo creek currently stands around 9 feet. locals tell me it gets dicey around 11 feet. 13 feet here is officially flood stage. back out here live right now i'm sure you can see those sandbags across the creek at a home or business on the ot

behind me is san anselmo creek. this is an area folks in this specific area in downtown san anselmo to keep a close eye on if it hits a certain flooding stage that could lead to flooding in the area. it is at low levels right now, it would have to reach a high level in order for that flooding to take place but as i nextmentioned landslide issues in sausalito. remember that's where we saw the massive landslide as long sausalito boulevard, where a woman was miraculously saved after her home slid down a hill. now there's plenty of debris cleanup ahead in that area with homes and buildings being damaged as a result of the landslides in fact we were there when the city council voted for a local state of emergency due to the damage in cleanup that they have ahead. we'll keep a close eye on that. we also saw flooding in santa rosa, this is video from the previous storm system where a portion of the road we were right there was flooded by the nearby mark west creek. you see cars driving through that of course that is never

in mill valley, corte madera, san anselmo, still raining, light rain as far south as concord, a few heavier showers moving over san francisco and the complete lack of rain for much of san mateo and santa clara county. it is uncanny what's going on to the north yet almost nothing going on in san jose right now. the atmospheric river has been aimed at the north bay and simply will not move. literally five minutes ago a tweet was sent out squaw alpine did break their all time record for the snowiest month, 286 inches of snow and mind you, it's february. it's the shortest month and it's not even finished snowing yet. in 26 days squaw alpine broke its all time record for snowiest month, more than 23 feet of snow in 26 days. san jose 56 degrees. you're waiting for the rain that does come tonight, livermore 57, santa rosa hoping the rain stops. it will after midnight tonight, currently 52 there. temperatures not moving much, 50s overnight, sunrise 6:44. we knew we were getting an atmospheric river. what we did not know and what's surprising all of us is the heaviest rainfall simply did not move. u

officials say they will start evacuating people and close off san anselmo avenue. (robin) in the east bay... the alameda county public works department has been operating a rolling closure of the alameda creek regional trail... from niles canyon road in fremont to the bay. this is allowing crews to perform flood maintenance. the alameda county water distrcit is paying close attention to the creek itself. but it does not believe the creek will crest during this storm. yesterday, the water district deflated two rubber dams it had installed in the creek. neighbors noticed the dams being deflated monday as w

in san anselmo, the flood warnings are practically second nature. road signs read "when flooded, turn around, don't drown." an empty storefront alerts customers, not closing, "simply taking precautions due to weather." >> it was really nuts in '82. cars were filled with mud and just rolling down the street here. >> reporter: there are even high water marks for particularly memorable floods, like 2005. donna seymour, owner of cucina, remembers it well. >> some businesses were never able to open again. if they had carpet or drywall, it seeped into the walls and they had so much water damage that probably eight to ten businesses never came back from th. reporter: that might storefronts. for seymore, she just installed a brand-new bar on a street. >> i'm very rojeco and very expensive, and i'd love for it to not have water inside of it, to be closed. >> reporter: elsewhere in marin, water response teams carefully monitor dangerous hillsides. the national park service scaled the incline where a mudslide ripped a home off its foundation two weeks ago with

wayne freedman is live from a hilltop in san anselmo. >> it is a snow chase and it did happen today. it's roughly 4 degrees. that is mount tam over my shoulder. it tends to catch a lot of water at this time of year. cascade falls in mill valley, own a day when a torrent of rainwater rushed down mount tamalpais, we had another kind of precipitation in our sights. >> i don't think so. i don't think it's quite cold enough. >> she might want to think again. this is the summit of that same mount tam not much later. those really are snow flurries captured by a marin county fire surveillance camera at 2,572 feet. deputy chief mark brown showed us the live feed. the camera network covers 14 mountaintops, including mount saint helena at 4,431 feet. and there not only did the snow come down with authority, it also stuck to the ground. here is a freeze-frame from that saint helena camera. it almost looks like tahoe up there. >> it is the tallest peak that we have in the north bay. so it makes sense. >> if snow makes sense on a day when waters raged, but flurries stole the headlines. what will t

san anselmo over 9 inches of rain and mt. tam close to 9 inches of rain there.ichmond in the east bay measuring nearly 6 inches of rain last week, and novato almost 6 inches of rain there, and as we look at some more of those totals, san francisco over 4 inches, oakland 3.5, sunnyvale over 3 inches, livermore close to 3 inches of rain, and they really got pounded yesterday with some storms, and san martin, 2.5 inches of rain there, and close to 2.5 inches of rain in san jose. now that we are drying out, we have some very cold air in place. martinez will start out with some upper 30s. we'll gradually make it into the mid-50s today, and we are so happy to see that sunshine after some spots had ten straight days of rain chances in the forecast. today we do not have any rain. it will be sunny with highs reaching into the mid-50s. we have a couple more days of some dry weather, until we start to see this storm system approaching, and as of now, it looks like a pretty weak storm and by the taime it gets here will bring in light amounts of rain. . mov this moves in on

snow on the hills and then looking at the rainfall totals that were very beneficial and looking at san anselmo, close to 5 inches of rain there. now heading out the storm movel with mid-40s around the area. by tomorrow morning it will be much colder and then looking live right now in palo alto with shining you can't tell it was raining there earlier this morning and the temperatures will stay in the upper 40s for the next few hours. briefly hit 50 degrees and then start to dip once again. we're going to see some cold temperatures tonight and that could mean icy spots on some of the roads, especially in the north bay with napa reaching to 30 degrees and 31 degrees in santa rosa. also in livermore watching out for some icy bridges and overpasses dipping to 32 degrees and even cold tonight and half moon bay dipping to 36 degrees for the low. so as you wake up tomorrow morning, it is going to be cold and all because of the cold front that swept through and brought us the wintry mix, the rain and snow and it's still snowing in the sierra with light snow showers and tapering off into tonight and the

it is all over the place, because you look at san anselmo where we had over four inches of rain. head over toward napa, it was close to two inches and santa rosa had a little bit over two inches of rain, so as you look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, not a whole lot of breaks in the rain, and it's going to be chilly over these next few days, and this is as a cold front moves through. we are going to see still some scattered showers moving through, even a chance of storms. as we get a look at some of the heavier rain moving through parts of the east bay, i want to take you in closer as we see the rain moving through san lorenzo and san leandro and moving over toward castro valley. we can even take this down to street level and show you exactly where the heaviest rain is coming through, but i take off the storm ranger radar and you can see the amount of detail that you lose and it's several minutes behind, so that's the reason why it's a really good tool to have something like a mobile done learn radar like we have hear in the bay area, right here on nbc. now
