really feeling a sense of routes in san francisco, and also raising our children here. as a young family, we went through the discussion and dialogue that many young families go through in san francisco. "should we move to the suburbs? should we move elsewhere? san francisco is expensive to live. the public-school system has been difficult in the past." i think less about the quality of schools because we have great schools and grieg parental involvement, but more about the assignment process. where would my child go to school? a lot of family leaves, -- a lot of families leave. we stuck around, but it was a turning point decision to say, all right, we are here from -- we're here for good. what can we do to make this place better? getting involved in politics was the fact that the seed was open for election for the first time in a long time. it was previously mayor newsom's seat and supervisor alioto- pier's seat. i did not get into politics because i had a lifelong ambition of being a politician. that is not me. i came from a private sector, and looking at honestly answer

as a board, as a city. we should come together as san franciscans, and, colleagues, at this time, i hope, and i asked that we unanimously vote for ed lee to be our next mayor. this is also a historic day for the asian-american community. for a community that has been here in santa francisco, for over 160 years, i am a product of that community. i know the ed and all of us of asian-american decent feel the legacy. i want to thank all of you who have been part of this historic moment to make this happen. and say that this is obviously not just about a chinese- american community or an asian american community. this is about the american dream. the idea that anyone of any background of any color from any part of the globe can come here and sunday be at the very top of what our community is about -- and someday be at the very top of what our community is about. >> hello and welcome to "meet your district supervisor." we're here with supervisor elsbernd from district 7. supervisor elsbernd was appointed to the board in august of 2004 and elected to his seat in november of that year. he is in the middle of his sec

san francisco. so we wholeheartedly support the construction of the new terminal. as a business development manager, i am always in front of these cruise ship operators, touting the benefits of san francisco, and we have been investing in our yard peer through that investment, as peter said, we have the capability to lift some of the largest cruise ships that call on the west coast here. the carnival splendor, which caught on fire down in san diego earlier this year -- if we had not done those upgrades with the port, the ship could not have been repaired here on the west coast. with these upgrades, the rigid for 2012, we have three ships book. as peter said, the carnival will be coming next month. not for 14 days. only 411, but we still have 35,000 man hours to complete in that time. the splendor carries 3000 passengers. the current terminal cannot handle the -- that. the current terminal -- we are at a disadvantage to san diego. we are at a disadvantage to l.a. and seattle. we all know that more ships will bring more jobs, more dollars, and on behalf of bae, we support

san francisco bay, specifically. a study showed that approximately 25,000 plastic bags were removed from san francisco bay in just one single day. there are many other examples. as you may know, the city has a zero waste policy. as part of the plastic bag are very difficult to recycle and they contaminate san francisco's recycling and composting programs. they interfere with san francisco's official goal of zero waste by 2020. i want to give you a little history of how the problem has been addressed in san francisco. i mentioned the 2007 ordinance. i will tell you more about that in the 2010 revolution. as a result of supervisor mirkarimi's legislation, san francisco became the first american city to ban plastic bags from use at large grocery stores and pharmacies. all other san francisco stores or restaurants currently may still offer single use plastic bags. supervisor mirkarimi, the department of the environment, and others, have always contemplated since 2007 that the legislation would be a first step and imagined event at all stores and a charge for bags. that has now been done overseas for many years and now-in number of california communities as well. san

next speaker, please. >> hanel, my name is -- i am a recent graduate, and i work and live in san francisco as a personal fitness trainer. i know from experience that the survey that san francisco parks and recreation as did, their findings are true. san franciscans will be one more trails -- really want more trails, and golf ranks low for recreational activities. i think this is a great opportunity for several other reasons. it would relieve san francisco of the burden of maintaining sharp park in its current stake, and $50 million in potential costs in the future that we would have to eat. it would create new opportunities for more equitable and diversity recreation. even within the golf community, even though it might be accessible, it is not accessible to most in san francisco, so i do not see why we should be subsidizing it when it is losing money and it is in a bad location. it would be wonderful if of could coexist and be sustainable, which may be possible in other locations, but i think based on the science here, that is not compatible. i think we have an opportunity to give over these

as the sierra club, we care about that. there has been a question about how such a project is funded. i passed chair and legislative chair the san francisco bay joint venture, a collaboration of 27 federal and state agencies as well as nonprofits and businesses who work together to restore wetlands are around san francisco bay. we brought over $50,000,000.20 restoration funds in san francisco bay and we have a goal of restoring 200,000 acres. we are helping to restore wetlands at the big london and -- big all the data. we have money for these projects available for federal agencies through a collaborative process we help to facilitate. at the beginning, there was some suggestion that the cards or loaded in terms of who is coming to speak. i think you can see from the numbers speaking on this issue the reason so many people are speaking on it is because there is a heck of a lot of us who want this to take place. >> thank you very much. after the war, jack was a tugboat captain as well as a docking pilot on san francisco bay. he was a partner in the american navigation tugboat company and eventually started his own company which we know now as they dealt a marine. to this day, they are a poor tenant. he retired in 1993. -- bay delta marine. to this day, they are a port tenant. he was one of the most respected pilots on san francisco bay, always demanded by agents and owners for the most difficult and challenging jobs on the day. he is survived by his wife, magdalena, and his daughter. our last item is related to bicycle improvements along the waterfront. i think you remember a few weeks ago, the staff made a presentation on bicycles share and other buy programs. we have planning development staff here to talk specifically about bicycle safety along with one of our partners, the san francisco bicycle coalition. >> thank you. afternoon, commissioners. today, we wanted a chance to address the concerns raised by the port commission regarding bicycle safety in the ferry building area and along the embarcadero. w

a long and distinguished career in san francisco. since 1989, has held a number of senior leadership positions. he is a fellow cal graduate. as you probably all know, last tuesday, november 8, the people of san francisco elected edwin lee in his own right, to serve as mayor of san francisco. let me say, on a personal note, the day before the election, i was having coffee at my favorite cafe in glen park, and lost in my e-mail, whatever i was doing in the moment. all of a sudden, i hear some commotion and see the mayor coming in to shake hands with me. he was doing parts of his campaign stump. it is already a tradition, in a few months that he served as interim mayor, among the department heads, you cannot be incognito in this town, because the mayor will find you. maybe in a cafe or someplace else that you hang out. this mayor likes to be everywhere, likes to know everyone. that is what the city really needs, somebody who knows the city, knows what the city is all about, what the city wants. has got the kind of discipline, the kind of 7 to 9 scheduled to make it happen. he has already set an example, and we are all looking fo
