during the earlier gunfire between dorner and the san bernadino county sheriff's deputies. two deputies were injured. and one of them has died. making dorner the suspect in four murders. kron4's jeff bush has an update. >> reporter: this was the scene mid afternoon. you can see two sepperate helicopters transporting the two san bernidino county sheriff's deputies who were shot as they arrived to assist three game wardens who came under fire by the suspect. >> there was a brief exchange of gunfire and one deputy has died and one deputy has still recovering from his injuries. >> reporter: the game wardens were the first to come in contact with the suspect and recognized him just before he began firing at them. >> he took a close look at the driver and recognized him as the suspect. before he even had a chance to put it out over the radio, they were driving in opposite directions, the suspect rolled his window down and the second patrol truck rolled up with the two wardens inside, that's when he engaged in the shooting with our two wardens inside. listen in and hear the sound

the los angeles police department has sent resources out to the san bernadino county airport. resources are waiting there for authorization from the san bernadino county sheriff to assist them. so this is a san bernadino county sheriff investigation. this is their lead. they have the incident commander out there. we are there to support them only if asked. that is as much as i have on that particular incident out there. quick update on how the search is going from our side. we have 1,045 clues that the officers are working on. they are following up on all the clues. obviously, some of them are panning out. some of them are dead ends. but we are continuing to do the search and continuing to work our clues while the events up in the san bernadino mountains unfold. i'll take a couple of quick questions but again my information is very, very sketchy. >> how sure are they that this is dorner? >> we're not positive. until we get him in custody and he is handcuffed and in jail we won't know for sure. they said he was similar in appearance. he was up in that area at one time. so, you k

first of all, this is a san bernadino county sheriff's investigation. they have the lead on this particular part of the investigation. san bernadino county sheriffs suffered the loss when the deputies tried to take the individual into custody and they're conducting the follow-up investigation into that incident. i would like to clarify information that has been put out there or rather some misinformation that has been put out there. i just got off the phone with the san better than teen owe sheriff's department. that cabin is too hot for anybody to make entry. there is no body located inside of that cabin. that cabin has not yet been searched because the fire is too hot as of five minutes ago for anyone to go in there. any reports of a body being found are not true. no body has yet been found in there. any reports that the body has been identified as christopher dorner are not true. no body has been identified and no body has been located. i am not sure where this information is coming from and how it was attributed to the los angeles police department.

pelley: updating our top story now, police have surrounded a burning house in the mountains of san bernadino countyes. they believe that christopher dorner, the fired la cop wanted for a murderous rampage is inside. carter evans is at the scene and joins us now by phone. carter, what do you know? >> scott when we pulled up on the scene around 12:30 this afternoon, it was in the middle of an intense gunfight between the person in that cabin believed to be christopher dorner and sheriff's deputies since then, two deputies have been hit by that gunfire, one has passed away. in the meantime, swat teams moved in on this cabin and over a period of a couple of hours they shot canisters of tear gas inside the cabin. shortly after those last round of tear gas were fired that cabin erupted into flames, it is still unclear at this point if the tear gas canisters caused the fire or if that fire was started from within. it looks impossible that anyone could have survived this inferno, there has been a lot of ammunition blowing up and it has taken a while before firefighters have been able to move in, but they a
