a huge fireball burning in this neighborhood surrounding glenview, skyline and san bruno avenue. a natural gas explosion leaving a crater in the ground. 53 homes destroyed, 120 damaged. witnesses describe the earth shaking and a loud roar when the explosion happened just after 6:00 p.m. >> we just started to watch the football game on tv, and sitting in the living room and all of a sudden, a real loud boom that shook the house. in fact, i thought there was maybe another two or three booms but it just shook the house. so i immediately jumped out of my chair, ran out the door, and i live just five houses up from the corner here. and looked out into the street and there was a huge fireball right here. this looks like a war zone. i have never seen anything like it in my life. >> reporter: and when it comes to a war zone scene, we are likely going to be a lot better view of that today as rescuers are able to go into the area and as chopper 5 daylight comes up and we can see more of the damage within the next couple of hours. it appears to be a pg&e natural gas line that exploded. the

and this new video was taken by a surveillance video at a gas station at glenview drive and san bruno avenue. watch what happens. it's a couple of miles away from the explosion. but you can still see the intensity of the flames and the reaction of the people. a woman there with her baby running across the street. some, though, actually drove toward the glenview neighborhood while the explosion, as you saw there, sent others running for their lives. >>> pg&e announced today it's creating a $100 million fund for the victims of the san bruno disaster. the utility says it will help residents with immediate cash paints and pay for costs not covered by insurance. starting friday, homeowners will get individual checks between $15,000 and $50,000 depending upon the extent of the damage to their homes. pg&e says that residents won't be asked to waive legal claims to get that money. >>> well, tonight, pg&e says it's pretty sure no one recently called from san bruno's firestorm area to report a gas leak before the explosion. the company says if they did, they would have responded immediately. today, th

. >> reporter: the tape also shows the reaction of the people at the san bruno avenue and glenview road gas station. one man runs from his car at the pump. some people describe down the street towards the fire while a woman was a baby runs toward the camera. three pieces of the 28" gas line are heading to the ntsb in washington, d.c. investigators will try to determine if the gas line was broke or broken. >> take it to our lab and may include putting it under a electron micro cope. by look at the detail and magnification that will help us asker contain whether it was a fatigue fracture related to the depressurizing. was it damage from -- where it struck it and caused damage we would be able to ascertain that. >>> they will look at collateral damage to see if they can quantify in pounds per square inch the explosion. this recently released videotape could help them measure how far the fire flew and for how long. last thursday's gas pipe explosion killed four people and wounded dozens of others. a published report today says pg&e plan to replace a section of the same pipe in a separate lo

if you're heading to 280, all lanes open as well as the exit to san bruno avenue and sneed. but, again, avoid the area if you can. a lot of that smoke still blowing with this live shot and the devastation in the area. mike has actually been keeping track of the winds overnight and they've been in our favor. mike? >> there's three scenarios in general for winds in this area. one is a fast offshore wind. the other is the normal marine layer induced sea breeze which is usually pretty fast because it shoots through the san bruno gap or we have this morning high pressure, calming influence, winds only 3 to 5 mph. we got really lucky that out of the three we got that one. relative humidity is 77%. the winds will pick up during the afternoon hours in this area. they'll be out of the west at about i'd say 10 to 15 mph. but tonight i'm a little concerned because they could pick up to around 10 to 20 mph out of the west. the fire so hot -- mentioned doing a little research, natural gas mainly made of methane which burns at 3600 degrees fahrenheit. they gave us a figure on the satellit

. >> reporter: we're up here on san bruno avenue about as far up the hill as they are letting people go right now outside of the few of the areas still locked down nobody is going in. some fire crews have been left out. as people return to their homes, tonight and tomorrow and through the weekend, the big question on everybody's mind is, who is responsible for unleashing this hell in their neighborhood? >>> reporter: investigators got their first look today at the origin of the deadly blast that left a crater the size of a house. the gas line that ruptured is big enough for an adult to crawl through. 30" wide and containing volatile natural gas under pressure more than 1,000 pounds per square inch. this is where the pipeline ruptured. a pipeline that surrounds this entire neighborhood. it can be seen on this national pipeline mapping system schematic. actually a system of high pressure lines bordered by interstate 280 on the northwest, skyline boulevard on the east. the 30" section that blew thursday was a connector line that ran right under the intersection of glenview and estates d

san bruno are shut down. >> definitely avoid the area if you don't need to be there. here's a look at the map. if you're going on 280, we actually have off-ramps blocked. the san bruno avenueff-ramp is blocked after 280 as we will as sneed and that's what gets to skyline. in addition some of the major roads closed are skyline boulevard, also known as highway 35 which is closed all the way out to west borrow and college. so for a lot of folks heading to skyline college, i checked the website. right now it says access routes to the campus will be posted. we're waiting to hear from pg&e spokesperson jeff smith if there's even power at skyline college. also if you're heading towards sfo, everything is open on 280 but you may also want to consider 101 and try to avoid the area as much as possible. now, mike has been following the winds overnight and he's taking a look at the whether today as well. mike? >> a good morning to you. we got lucky last night and this morning. high pressure moving over. it stopped the marine layer influence. winds only 3 mph. normal they'd be 15 to 25 mph as i air shoots through the san bruno gap. because of the wind, not a factor. the relative humidi

i walked up san bruno avenue towards earl. walked, at first you could see the homes looked intact. some had green notices on the door that meant they had been inspected and okay. shortly after the notices turned to orange which means the homes are inhabitable. cars along the street, head lights were bubbles. as we began walking closer to earl, the cars were just destroyed. it is an absolute mess. i'm looking at that big crater. i'm standing just a few feet away from that 25 foot piece of pipe, that 30-inch pipe we heard so much about. i did send in a photo of that. i don't know if you're able to see that. >> we are looking at it right now. >> reporter: it's incredible, the distance that pipe flew out of this hole. it has to be 75 feet. an enormous piece of pipe to fly that distance and land right here in the middle of the street. i can only imagine what it was like to be here. these poor families that must have been sitting down for the dinner hour about this time yesterday. >> jodi, we are going to interrupt you right now. we

they can't get past san bruno avenue at crestmoor drive. but when they do get home, whether it's tonight or over the weekend, they are going to have the same question on their minds, who is responsible for unleashing this hell in their neighborhood? >>> reporter: investigators got their first look today at the origin of the deadly blast that left a crater the size of a house. the gas line that ruptured is big enough for an adult to crawl through. 30" wide and containing volatile natural gas under pressure more than 1,000 pounds per square inch. this is where the pipeline ruptured. a pipeline that surrounds this entire neighborhood. it can be seen on this national pipeline mapping system schematic. actually a system of high pressure lines bordered by interstate 280 on the northwest, skyline boulevard on the east. the 30" section that blew thursday was a connector line that ran right under the intersection of glenview and estates drives. >> it's a big problem. it's a really big problem and it grows every day. >> reporter: rick kessler with th

i was in my car, right over here at the intersection of san bruno avenue and skyline boulevard, right behind us here. less than a quarter mile away from it. it was a huge, at least 900 to 1,000-foot wall of flames. i've never seen anything like it in my whole life. my sister and her whole family live down in the valley, off of concord way. and i was petrified for them. and it felt like it was the end of the world. it really did. >> i can't imagine what that must have been like. you started to go towards the houses and see more over the course of several minutes? >> yeah. you know, as soon as the explosion happened, there was quite a bit of backup of traffic and congestion on skyline boulevard. people were pulling over in awe and didn't know what to think. i reacted right away. and went straight to my sister's house to try to get them evacuated as fast as possible. they were less than a quarter a mile away from the actual explosion. and literally, by the time i got down there, the house across the street was on fire. and the windows on the house were melting. >> and you said your siste
