the plane was headed from oregon to san carlos when it reported engine trouble?porter: correct, this was around 9:30 last night. the emergency contact from the pilot it's a small aircraft saying that it was having engine problems. shortly after that radio call, disappeared from radar. he mentioned he was going to try to land at nas field. people had gone to the airport, not been able to locate the aircraft. we just arrived on the scene, an area that was burning overnight, 30 acre wild fire. this is where the fire department believes they have found wreckage, said they cannot confirm yet if this is related to this aircraft, but they believe they have found the wreckage and that when that plane crashed, that would have caused this wild fire. now it's hard to tell if it's still burning, we don't see any flames. faa believes that this person, this pilot was the only person on board the aircraft, again, flying from brookings, oregon, to san carlos on the planes. reporting engine trouble around 9:30, disappearing from radar right after that, and unfortunately, it sound

he was headed to san carlos. from oregon. he radioed that he had problems.y pick up an emergency distress beacon at 11 o'clock. and they lost radio control and the crews knew they needed to head out into the remote area in petaluma to search. it took several hours, three hours, until a firefighter spotted an organize blow coming from a hillside and they covered the fire, a very remote area in petaluma, hilly and, wouldy area and they covered the crash with no survivors. >> don't have any information of the pilot, we are working with the ntsb investigation and i am told they have a couple of hours response time before they are here. until that time it gives the firefighters a chance to gain control of the fire. >> they are still working on the active scene that is dangerous very hilly and rocky. they have on get the fire out before they can reach the crime scene. they have two active situations. they are calling the fire 50 percent contained and estimating it has burned 40 acres and they cannot get a visual of it or fly it is foggy and misty. they cannot get

. >> reporter: gasia, this is the san carlos airport where the plane that crashed was based. officials here at the airport tell me that they were called this morning by the faa to check and see if a certain plane was here. it was a plane involved in last night's crash in marin indeed it was not here. this afternoon our news chopper 2 flew over the crash site near hicks valley west of novato. you can see on the video that the plane is in the middle of the burned out area because the crash sparked a 32-acre wild land fire. a coroner's official said the pilot's body has been recovered although the person's identity has not been confirmed and likely won't be until sometime tomorrow. the plane is registered to a san carlos resident, and i found out that the man had sold to a family. search and rescue crews spent hours trying to find the wreckage. >> we began conducting searches of the area out here. it took three hours until a time when a deputy luckily was able to spot the orange glow of a fire near the hillside which at that point we called to the fire resources to come. even at
