. >> pete suratos joining us from san carlos with all the details. this is go to impact thousands of people and thousands of earbuds. good morning. >> good morning to you. yes, it's going to impact a lot of people who live near the caltrain stations here in san  carlos, but in order to reduce noise impacts, it's going to be noisy at night, at least in the short term. caltranwill begin this project starting tonight using a rail mounted industrial sized grinder to smooth out defects along the rail. this will hopefully reduce noise in the area as well as make rides smoother for the passengers. they're going to start at the san francisco caltrain station tonight, working down the peninsula before ending in the south bay. the equipment will be used between 10:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. when there is limited train service. it could make for noisy nights if you live near the tracks. the work is expected to take up to three weeks, wrapping up may 19th. we'll talk more about the impacts to folks who live around the caltrain stations in the next hour. live in san

it happened at 4th and east san carlos street. if that sounds familiar, it's right near the entrance to san jose state university. police are not releasing a lot of details right now, but they say a woman, possibly in her 20s, suffered head injuries in front of the restaurant in the attack. our crew found blood on the pavement outside. employees at the restaurant tell us they didn't see what happened. we reached out to san jose police whether or not they're looking for suspects right now. >> sun veil city employees could go on strike at any moment after a late night vote last night. the decision means the union leadership can walk out any time. the union wants a 14% raise over four years. and the city is offering 10%. >> we want to get this deal done. we really do. but we also need our families able to support themselves. and that's what this is about. >> about 400 people belong in the union. many work as librarians, engineers, and mechanics. we reached out to the city's mayor for a response but have not yet heard back. >> a strang

. >> reporter: i'm here at the san carlos cal train station. can you tell me what's the work going on this week and the following week? >> we're going to be doing some rail grinding which involves a large engine smoothing out the tracks, making sure that everything keeps moving safely and smoothly. it's a standard maintenance that happens over 5 to 6 years. >> why are they doing maintenance? it has something to do with the noise right? >> some noise. it's generally more of a safety precaution. we want to make sure the rails stay safe and are the quality they need to be. >> what should residents who live by the tracks know? >> you can expect a little bit of noise in the near future. we are grinding metal down it's not a quiet process. but they'll be starting in san francisco tonight and moving south. so residents shouldn't be hearing this noise for more than a day or two. >> how long will this work be done and for what hours? >> the work is from 10:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for the next few weeks. from is san francisco down through san jose. and week
