the california republicans held their state party convention in san diego over the weekend. they heard from their two leading candidates for governor and supporters who lobbied delegates. despite all that the party failed to make an endorsement for a gubernatorial candidate. san diego businessman john cox we're told got 55% of the vote, less than the 60% needed to get the party's endorsement. assemblyman travis alem of huntington beach got 40% of the vote and 4% of the delegates voted for no endorsement. that split means the state gop might not be able to advance a candidate to the general election. the primary election is june 5th. only the top two finishers in that primary regardless of party go on to the november general election. that means race for governor could be between the two top democratic finishers. also, state republicans worry if there is no gop candidate at the top of the ticket for governor, it might dampen republican voter turnout in turn giving democrats a better chance of picking up key house seats in the midterm elections. nbc bay area. >> thanks very mu
